Is it for real? 3
Group, There is a huge amount of speculation here about this new IC-7*%&+ widget. I think, if the thing is not real (a spoof of some sort), then whoever did the picture should have received huge bucks from Icom for the new concept! --color screen etc! I hope the thing has 220! The Japanese always forget that! KI6O - Tom

W6MKU sure as heck ain't a gentleman. I'm > > to vicious when riled. {O,o} Um, I'm good on QRZ and the call is right there before your eyes in the message in which you posted that request. I find that amusing. {^_-} {^_^} as a signature is so ingrained in me it's hard to break. It started over a couple decades ago. The first part, which actually happened after the second part had begun, was my being assigned some work on a VAX-780 running VMS. I have a character asset called curiosity. When I had time I prowled around the machine, harmlessly since I could not finish my job if it broke. I discovered that VMS disks and partitions are referred to as [000,000] for partition zero disk zero, and so forth. I soon learned that you can shorten this to [0,0]. I noted the resemblance to a face right away. The second part of its beginnings was my participation in an "Amateur Press Association" "distie" (or distribution) called "APA-L" that is collated weekly Thursday evenings as the LASFS, Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, meetings. Zines, a person's contributions, often had interliners, stings of symbols to set off sections. One day I used "[0,0]" repeated across the page for the first interliner. Then I decided a variation on the theme might be interesting. By illogical progression I started using [^_^] as a signature at the end of my Zine. Now, it seems Jerry Pournelle (yeah him) is a member in very long and good standing of LASFS. He had gotten to know that I had computers and modems. This was in 1985 with SLOW SLOW modems, mind you. He had also heard I was doing some BBS work and CP/M hacking. One day he took me aside and told me to find a "Tymnet" phone number and type "bix" at the prompts, or something like that. So when I got home I did. BIX was booted near the last day of March. I was on it by early June of 1985. And [O_O] became my signature. On BIX it was easy to "show resume" to figure out who a person was. So that soon became my only signature. That lasted until not very long ago when the lights were finally turned out at BIX. During that time the signature rounded out a little, which I think is a little more feminine. And I developed the {O,o} (crazed}, {^_-} (wink), and many other variants. It's hard to break a habit of essentially 20 years making. I still tend to sign messages {^_^}. There is this little "reinforcement" that I see, too. The ambiguity tends to lull people into thinking I might be one of the guys. So when I start talking dirty er technical they have a better chance of listening. Can you guess at my degree of contentment with the kind of situation that has me the senior engineer present in a meeting with the customer's men all asking the other men questions I should be the one answering? Then when one of them turns to me to ask if I'd go get coffee.... They were customers. I managed to hold a straight face as I said I'd ask a secretary to get it. "My" half of the room visibly relaxed when I kept my cool. At least some of them had noticed my growing irritation. {^_-} So anyway, the "logical mistakes" tend to reinforce the relative anonymity of the "BIXie" signature. {^_-} Joanne, Wilma's 6 Mangy Kinky Undies (Wonderful 6 Million Kilowatts Unleashed?) And for the record "every Thursday" above means it. There have been fewer meetings that did not happen than there are years the club has existed. And it's the oldest SF club in continuous existance in the known universe. (Yes, Larry Niven, the author, is also a member.)

Price check for the IC-7000 16
Well, looking at Universal-radio.com here are the current prices for the mobile rigs: IC-706mk2g with HSC unit and one CW + one SSB filter: $1,245 FT857ND with HSC unit and one CW + one SSB filter: $1,140 TS-480 with HSC unit and one CW + one SSB filter: $1,360 -------------------------------------------- Now, the IC-7000 will not need extra filters and the HSC unit is built-in. If we take the highest price (Kenwood at $1,360), the IC-7000 being a new radio AND a DSP radio (all existing radios are analog), you can see or imagine where the msrp and street prices will be. -Best

May or June? 16
One of the benefits of putting the IC-7000? on order is that once your money is on the line someone will talk to you...Last week, Icom was denying that the product even exists.. so Saturday I put an IC-7000 on order at HRO.. Today I was told by my salesman at HRO, that "ICOM WAS NO LONGER DENYING ITS EXISTENCE" and I could expect delivery May or June... depending on the time for FCC type acceptance. Based on what happened with the IC-756 Pro 3 .. Put it on order in August... They began US deliveries in December... So I may actually get one by June.. whatever it is ...... [NO ONE HAS SEEN ANY SPECS... SO NO INANE QUESTIONS PLEASE] and whatever it costs.... [THE PRICE HAS NOT BEEN SET.. SO NO INANE QUESTIONS PLEASE] .... __________________________________________________________ Howard S. White Ph.D. P. Do our comments affect the design of the IC7000 ? 12
Hi IC7000 Fans, Here's a question for anyone in the Group: Do we have any evidence that what we write here affects the design of the proposed IC7000? Mil 810......... I hereby close the thread 2
Hi Group, Thanks for the comments on how Icom is meeting Mil Spec 810 on shock and vibration. >The IC-7000 does not require analog filters so it is > mechanically/electrically more robust in theory. >However, properly mounted PCBs do not vibrate as much >with SMT as they do with the heavier leaded components. I do not own a 706, but I would venture to guess the 7000 will meet Mil 810 for shock and vibration as well. The thread is now closed(See Adam, we can be good sometimes). Wishes for remote control (was Do our comments affect the design of the IC7000 ?) 2

(And a poll to request > "radio status" should exist if the "push" mode from radio to > remote controller is not desired.) The radio should support both, the push and pull mode. By default the push mode should be deactivated since not every client might desire (or even be capable to handle) it. > I'll up the ante on this and request that the changes which are > reported be user programmable via CI-V. Only tales one bit per > parameter to report. I completely agree on that. Regarding collisions, ethernet is of course a far better choice as issues are handled at operating system level and therefore will remove complexity from the IC-7000 device driver. However the IC-7800 only uses ethernet for updating its firmware, as I have read. So we can only hope that Icom sees the signs of time and opens the ethernet port for remote control and bandscope samples too. We will see what happens. ;-) > > ...IC-7000 and the computer... > > * implement a sophisticated CI-V command set that allows (almost) > all functions to be controlled from the computer. > > No, all! and not just conrolled, but readable as well. Why not allow all functions to be controlled? That would open nice opportunities. Of course they should be readable as well. But that's already the case for almost all functions today. > If the C&R, Control and Reporting, is via CI-V that may be > worthwhile. If the C&R is via Ethernet that's spurious. (CI-V > should still exist and offer the ability to send control data > to the likes of a PW-1, of course. But for remote control it > should be considered a dead issue in exchange for an Ethernet > interface that handles the IF samples and the bandscope data > as well as the C&R data. Then we can build magic with radios. I do not completely agree on that as the CI-V system will also be necessary if you want to connect the IC-7000 to another Icom radio, e.g. to do CI-V transceive. Otherwise you will always need a software or microcontroller that interfaces CI-V with ethernet. But I don't think it's a big issue to keep the CI-V jack and add an ethernet jack too. Of course sending bandscope samples will make most sense for ethernet only as you don't have to take care about the low bandwidth the CI-V bus has. However AOR managed to do that for the AR-8200. You can read the bandscope samples in a packed format via the serial port. But I have not tested how performant this solution is. So ethernet is definitely the better choice for such things. Mil 810 C, D, E for shock......Mil 810 C, D, E, for vibration in IC706/7000 9

IC700 (Was IC7000) 2
Hi all just visited an emporium in Scotland & he reckons he has had info on the IC700 not the IC7000 but couldnt lay his hands on it. Could make more sense not conflicting with ICR7000 & having 3 numbers as the 706 series. John G0VGZ

Unit Name 5
I wonder why Icom would use the same "name" for a new radio - "IC- 7000" - that they used for a unit a few years ago. Just to make myself clear about all this: I am sure that the major manufacturers will debut offerings at Dayton. But I am having trouble believing that Icom will soon cease production of the '706, since it is still selling extremely well. And so it goes.... Clint Bradford, K6LCS

New to the group 2
Hi All I joined because I am interested in this new radio by Icom. I own the IC 706 Mk2 G . I think it is the best out there for the price and versatility. I have two questions, does anyone have any advance knowledge of when the 706 will be discounted and closed-out? And when will it happen. If at Dayton they close them out for $500 , that would be a heck of a deal! In 2003, they were closing out the Yaesu 817 for $400 at Dayton... so it could be possible. ( They closed out the 817 to make way for the 817ND) My only beef with the new 7000 would be that 222 Mhz. will be excluded again. At the very least , Icom could have provided a optional module to be installed for 222 Mhz. However the 7000 with 500 memories and 35 watts on UHF and better filters, would likely be worth the difference in price between a possible closeout price of the 706 and a possible selling price of $950 for the new 7000. Makes me wonder what Yaesu or Kenwood will come up to match the 7000. What ever the case, if the 7000 is just as reliable as the 706Mk2G. Then Icom will have another winner on its hands. Just look at the reviews of the 706Mk2G, out of 292 reviews it ranks a 4.5 (out of 5) on eham.net- exceptionally high. Bill in KY W4KYR
