It is probably safe to say that there will be no dramatic changes in IC-706MkIIG pricing until the IC-7000 has passed FCC certification and is released for sale in the US market. If the radio will be "unveiled" at Tokyo HamFair 2005 in August, we can expect to see US availability in 1Q/2006. Concerning 220 MHz, there is no amateur 220 MHz allocation outside Region 2. The radio manufacturers perceive our 222-225 MHz allocation as somewhat tenuous. It is a chicken/egg problem. Yaesu may come up with a competing 100% DSP-based radio if their first venture into "pure" IF-DSP design, the FT-DX9000 series, enjoys some success in the marketplace. They are currently test-marketing the basic ("D") version of the 9000 in Japan. Kenwood....hmmm, don't think so. Their latest HF offering, the TS-480, is analogue. ( They closed out the 817 to make way for the 817ND) My only beef with the new 7000 would be that 222 Mhz. will be excluded again. At the very least , Icom could have provided a optional module to be installed for 222 Mhz. However the 7000 with 500 memories and 35 watts on UHF and better filters, would likely be worth the difference in price between a possible closeout price of the 706 and a possible selling price of $950 for the new 7000. Makes me wonder what Yaesu or Kenwood will come up to match the 7000. What ever the case, if the 7000 is just as reliable as the 706Mk2G. Then Icom will have another winner on its hands.
