It's just like "computer illiterate" where most of the problem is based on being uncomfortable or afraid to learn. Real CW is very easy, and while there are lots of idiots (usually at the lower edge of the bands) there are plenty of hams willing to slow down and help you, myself included. Check out SKCC, free membership, lots of fun awards, and most importantly, very friendly people always willing to slow down for newcomers: (Sked page for members, have to ask about that once you join, but even without joining you can go there and see where on the dial we are) And remember, you can always "cheat" with the Signalink whenever you want. (I just recently did for the contest this weekend.) But the more CW you do, the faster you'll send/receive, and you eventually won't need to "cheat" with a computer anymore. A pure tone in a SSB transmitter can also be considered an IF at audio frequencies followed by an image reject mixer. Who said the IF of a transmitter had to be above audio frequencies? If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck. As I said in a previous message, the main advantage of using CW mode over SSB is on the receive side, where you have access to the narrower CW filters. And quite frankly, the rest of the world doesn't care - mode based regulation went out here years ago, now there's a simple bandwidth limit for each band. Many other countries have adopted similar regulations, from what I can gather. -- 73 de Tony VK3JED/VK3IRL |

Well, one could argue what "true CW" is.? Afterall, keying a tone into a SSB radio is the same thing, except that the first IF is at audio frequencies, and the first mixer is image rejecting. :)? The real difference between using CW and SSB mode on the radio will actually be on receive, because different filters will be available. That out of the way, to send computer generated CW in CW mode, you need an additional keying signal, and a connection to the KEY jack on the radio, and the software needs to be able to toggle a spare line on a serial port to generate the keying signal, or if the software will only send tones, you need to generate the keying signal from the audio - diode detector, smoothing cap (not too large value) and a comparator, or even a single transistor (if there's enough voltage to turn it on) should do it. -- 73 de Tony VK3JED/VK3IRL |

Re: Send CW via FLDIGI or other...
There may be a way to send a form of CW with audio tones, but it's far easier to send with another device. I use a RigBlaster Plug-n-play from West Mountain Radio for CI-V, CW and sound card digital modes. Around a hundred bucks and it works a treat. According to Tigertronics your Signalink should send real CW just fine, although I don't see a dedicated CW connection on the device. From http://www.tigertronics.com/slusbts.htm#How%20do%20I%20operate%20%22direct%20keyed%22%20CW%20with%20the%20SignaLink - How do I operate "direct keyed" CW with the SignaLink - This is done by simply connecting the SignaLink's PTT and Ground lines to the "Key" and "Ground" lines of your radio's Key jack.? One of our un-terminated radio cables can be used to make these connections.? You will need to attach the appropriate plug for your radio's Key jack to this cable.? Using our SLCABNC cable, we suggest attaching the white/orange wire to the tip of the plug, and the orange wire to the plug's body/sleeve.? You will then need to install the SignaLink jumpers as follows; PTT to 1, and G (ground) to 2.? Note that direct keyed CW is limited to about 25 WPM on Transmit (there is no limit on Receive), so if you need to transmit faster than this, you'll want to run AFSK CW. Personally I'd use a real CW device rather than the Signalink in this case, but then I run faster than 25 wpm. The Winkeyer WKUSB-SMT is an outstanding device found in many, many stations. http://k1el.tripod.com/wkusb_smt.html - inexpensive, easy to assemble, and above all it WORKS. Note that it won't decode CW for you, but I don't recommend using your computer to copy CW anyway, as it's unreliable too much of the time. Hope this helps! 73 de Bob WP2XX??? ---In ic7000@..., <kd8tzc@...> wrote: Is there a way to send CW on the 7000 via software like FLDIGI, WinWarbler, etc? ?I thought I have seen that some will send a ¡°tone¡± via SSB, but is there a way to send a true CW signal out while using the computer to type out the message, or do I need some other components between my computer, Signalink USB, and he rig? ? I do not know if the earlier models of the 7K work on 60 meters, but the manual with mine gives a rather complicated way of getting there, and the radio will only tune to those channels, so there is inherent safety. I haven't taken the time to do it, since I have another radio that goes there. So, the recent crop of 7K's will indeed tune to 60, but I do not know if the earlier models will allow a firmware upgrade as do some other radios.Alex Netherton On Mon, Nov 25, 2013 at 1:56 AM, Leroy Higgins <leroy.higgins@...> wrote:

HI Helen ?????????????? many of these problems coming to light are as a result of the lead free solder used in the construction of these modern transceivers. so a dry joint is the most likely cause of a lot of problems with the Icom Ic7000. ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Hi I am new to this group my name is Helen Vk3ry I have lost SSB upper and lower on my rig. I have been able to track the lack of TX down to the 1st IF? my thoughts it may be the processor, the rig is quite happy on am fm Rtty and good on ex. it implies the Dac is ok too,alc indicates very high alc although there is no alc voltage. I sure I am not the only one with this prob? ? ? ?? Any one with similar experience? KInd regards Helen VK3RY лл
