Yes they have had code free ham licenses for years and did not have disincentive licensing....

.....which has sparked the spectacular growth of Ham Radio and the associated electronics business...

I've heard not long ago that Japan was actually the largest amateur radio
market in the world with significantly more amateurs than the US.

This might bear looking into.

Ah - you beat me to it! Japan is indeed the largest market. Japan has
about half of the world's radio amateurs! The US has about 25%. The rest
of the countries have around 2% or less.

We will probably see it under the glass at Dayton 2005 this year.

Has anyone searched the FCC website for documents
concerning the approval cycle required by the FCC for
type acceptance or whatever they call it. This
process takes several months and must be done prior to
US marketing. The problem is knowing what ICOM called
the 7000 when they submitted it to the FCC. It could
be under a code name.

Re: Announced in Dayton?

Hi Mike,

In Europe, the old measures often linger on, but have been rationalised to
the metric system. In Germany, one can still buy "ein Pfund" (one pound) of
potatoes at the greengrocer's. One pound = precisely 0.5 kg. In Bavaria, one
orders "ein Mass Bier" (a measure of beer) at the pub. The "Mass" is a
1-litre mug.

Back to the IC-7000; its weight should be about the same as the IC-706MkIIG
- around 2.5 kg (5.5 lb, US or Imperial.)

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

20cm (less than an inch) shorter (front to back??), according to the orig.

Are there any size specs on this radio yet? I wonder if it's going to
be larger, smaller or about the same size as the 706 series.

Check again on that airliner thing. Boeing has announced quite a few
sales of its new planes and cited some specifications that basically
undercut the AirBus cost per passenger mile.

If it's a hoax it's a good one.
Concerning the market: I doubt if France is a key market for Icom. To me
it looks that the USA is the biggest market for HAM radio gear so one should
expect the announcement and release in the USA. But since Airbus took over
the market for large jetliners from Boeing the Japanese might focus on
Chirac and his friends...

This could well be a good clue as I dont't think it happens first in
France. Laws are too tight in terms of certification and thus making
things appear later in this territory.

I guess only time will tell, but I vote this is not a hoax.
