Collins Mechanical Filter
6
Can any of you give me a suggestion on what might be going on with one of my FT-818nd radio. I have two 818nd Radios but only one has a Collins Mechanical 500Hz CW Filter. I wanted to add one to the other radio so I bought one on eBay. It’s the same as the other which is the XF-115C. It’s my understanding that this filter is compatible with the ND versions of the 818/817. It says Collins Mechanical and Yaesu on the Filter. It was said to have been tested and it’s 500 Hz. The same filter works perfectly on my other radio. After installing the filter (all the menu settings are correct) I did not hear the distinct change in sound when turning on the filter (NAR). I assumed the filter was bad and returned it. I bought another from a different vendor. Same XF-115C Filter. Same problem. This radio is virtually literally brand new. I bought it from HRO when Yaesu announced the end of the 817/818 and am just now getting around to using it. It seems unlikely that both filters could be bad and also unlikely to be the radio as it’s brand new. When I turn on the filter (press NAR) I hear the click, no error messages but the sound doesn’t change in the way it’s supposed to and as it does on the other radio. Sorry for the long question. Anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?

Rig Control SW with FT817
10
I use my '817 for POTA events and value it highly for its reduced RX current drain and honest 5W TX power output. It's an older rig but still reliable. I bought one of those lightweight Evolve III education computers a couple of years ago at the wrapup of the Great American Shutdown. I am very impressed with that computer. It seems powerful enough to support modern, Windows 10 software and has a very long battery life, up to 10hrs, and can be powered by a 12VDC supply. What a great combination for a portable station, the 817 and the Evolve III. What is missing is the rig control software. I am mostly CW but can be pulled into digital modes by my Club members. My question is, what is possible using these traditional platforms, in particular for backpack radio work? Do I load up on HRD, Fldigi, and N3FJP, or would only one these suffice? Best practice for interface cables and circuits? Looking at HAMRS, it requires a network connection for full functionality. That introduces need for a hotspot resource, not often available without an aircard-capable internet or cellphone device. I appreciate your experience and welcome any comments and recommendations. Operating CW without Microphone- how to add FST button?
8
I use my FT-817 almost exclusively in CW mode, but I get irritated at having to have the microphone available in in order to change the "FST" status (10 hz vs 100 hz tuning resolution). So I want to modify the FT-817 chassis/case to have a permanently installed momentary contact "FST" button. If anyone has done this, please share how you did it. Part number(s)/source for a suitable pushbutton switch? And any installation photo(s) would be great! I have examined the FT-817 service manual and I know where to make the connections at the microphone jack for a "FST" pushbutton. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Mike N4MWP

Does it matter which antenna port you use for VHF/UHF versus HF. In other words (assuming the proper connector) can you use the rear HF Connector for VHF?

Neptune 50w amp repair(s)
2
Is there anyone in the U.S. that knows and can work on the Neptune 50w external amp (manual band ) sold by 60dbm.com? I purchased one (used) almost a year ago and it does not put out any power on the 6m band. The other bands are fine. Yes, I purchased it used and it arrived DOA for the 6m band. Buyer beware. My fault. Had a local tech look at it and he said there were some issues with the wiring and even with the schematic, was not able to fix the problem. I've since also replaced a whanky BNC connector and the power push on/off switch now needs to be replaced. Yes, I've contacted the supplier/builder in the Ukraine and he said send it and I'll look at it.But, with back and forth shipping costs and then the labor/parts costs I would be out more than I paid for the amp. I recently emailed them for specs on the power switch and still no response. I appreciate Ukraine is still at war with Russia but expected some response. So, while I currently have a 80m-10m external amp I would like to get it to work for 6m with my FT 817ND. Any suggestions? thanks, T, 73

W4RT ONE-PLUG POWER
10
I have the assembly and, it passes the visual inspection - no leakage or swelling. I also have the W4RT companion one fast charger. However, I am reluctant to attempt charging NiMH batteries this old. (War stories?) Has anyone tried to simply replace the batteries with a new battery pack? If so, what batteries did you use and how did you do it, mechanically? I don't want to buy a new assembly. Thanks, Emmett, WA5EWN

Sotabeams speech compressor vs The One Big Punch by W4RT
3
I wonder of anyone has “The One Big Punch” adaptation done to their mic by W4RT when he was modding the 817? If so it would be neat to see the difference between “The One Big Punch” and the Sotabeams processor. I think “The One Big Punch” is just a capacitor or a few other parts to knock off the wasted frequencies in the audio but for the price the Sotabeams processor is probably better for one reason or the other. I know the W4RT (BHI I think) audio processor that I had i stalled does make a difference in the receiver but that was the most expensive upgrade W4RT did back in the day. Any thoughts on the transmission audio between the two transmitter processors? Dave K8WPE

Sotabeams speech compressor
14
Now that better weather is hopefully not too far away I have put together a grab bag of kit for portable working. I have a Ft817nd and a ft818 for /p use, the 817, z817 plus a couple of wire antennas and patch leads all fit in a padded dog treat pouch, ideal. However it can be difficult getting contacts especially if a couple of stations call at the same time as you. I also have a sotabeams inline speech compressor, first time I used it was an eye opener. Usually I have to repeat my callsign as the other stations miss a letter or two and ask for a repeat, sometimes more than once if my signal is low. With the speech compressor though I had no repeats asked for last week, 5w from a linked dipole in inverted V in back garden worked all over EU and into Russia. I was heard first call and received good audio reports, switching the compressor off and there is a definite drop in signal. This was with the compressor in as delivered configuration, this weekend I will use another rig to monitor my audio and adjust mic gain on 817 plus P2 on the compressor board to set it to my voice. Really good addition to my portable setup along with my K1EL K16 keyer. Andy

FT-817ND power takes time to reach 5 Watts after powering on
3
Hello, My FT-817ND (bought new in 2004) takes some time to reach 5 Watts after first powering on. Example: apply 12V external supply, power on rig, key down on 28.060 MHz CW. Power is initially about 3.5-4 Watts, and current draw is about 1.6-1.7 Amps. Keep keying down. Current draw drifts up and power output drifts up. After about 5-10 seconds, the rig reaches 5 Watts output at 2 Amps. Thereafter, the rig puts out 5 Watts as long as the rig is kept powered on. I observe this more pronounced on a few bands, e.g. 30m and 10m. If I give the rig 13.8V, the time to reach the 5 Watts output after power-on is shorter. If I turn the rig on, leave it on in receive mode for a several minutes, and then key down on 28.060 CW, I get the 5 Watts at 2 Amps immediately. Is this normal behavior for this rig, or is it a sign that something is aging and should be replaced? 73 Mike N9OHW

FT-818 Odd SWR Readings on 70 cm
10
My FT-818 shows 3 bars on the SWR meter on 70 cm at the 5 W setting, when connected to a good quality UHF/microwave dummy load. On 50 or 144 MHz it shows zero bars. This is true for both front and rear antenna connectors. The output power is indeed 5 watts, measured on a Coaxial Dynamics meter. I have tried a couple of good dummy loads. Can anyone comment as to whether this is normal behaviour? A local says his FT-817 shows zero bars on 432 MHz on a good load......so is there a change from the FT-817, or is there something amiss in my '818? 73, Steve VE3SMA

Iambic mode - A or B?
6
As a long-term straight key operator trying to get to grips with iambic keying I would like to know whether the 817's internal keyer is mode A or mode B. Whichever it is, there isn't a choice, and I'm convinced that I would find the other mode easier! Any advice, please? 73, John G4EDX-- John Fletcher

Power bank questions
33
I was wondering if it is possible to have a power bank to charge my phone (while hiking) and also to have it as a backup power source for the Yaesu. Not only voltage and current ratings on websites like Amazon are confusing (and probably wrong), but I'm also insecure if a USB-C to DC cable would handle the ~2.6 A current the Yaesu uses to TX (I use a lot of FT8). Is it possible to have a power bank to meet my needs? What kind of criteria should I look for? Daniel PY2TDB.
