Power bank questions

I was wondering if it is possible to have a power bank?to charge my phone (while hiking) and also to have it as a backup power source for the?Yaesu.

Not only voltage and current ratings on websites like Amazon are confusing (and probably wrong),?but I'm also insecure if a USB-C to DC cable would?handle the?~2.6 A current the?Yaesu uses to TX?(I use a lot of FT8).?

Is it possible to have a power bank to meet my needs? What kind of criteria should I look for?

Daniel PY2TDB.

USB-C can natively handle up to 5 amps.? Your phone has the circuitry built-in to use up to that amount.? As long as its 12V and <= 5A then you are good to go!

Hi
I am using Power Delivered USB C that can produce 12v to my 817

What modes you use? Does the power bank or the cable heat up?

There is USB-C, the connector standard, and USB-C PD which supports higher voltages and current ratings (like charging laptop batteries).
?
If I understand the OP's desire, he wants a power bank that outputs proper voltages for both their cellphone and their FT-817.
?
TalentCell has some interesting power banks, like this:
?
?
But this particular model lacks a high-current/high-voltage USB-C PD port...
?
Personally I'd prefer something like this:
?
- A Bioenno 9 Amp LiFePO4 battery & charger (still on BOGO at $115 plus shipping for TWO batteries and TWO chargers)
?
- This PowerWerx USB-C QC adapter: $30
?
- A powerpole panel mount to power the FT-817
?
- A small Harbor Freight case, like this:
?
Yes, that takes you to $200, but if you can find a friend to split the BOGO deal on the battery, you're now under $150 for a great, robust power solution.

Hope this helps,

Two ordinary 5 volt power banks of sufficient ah ratings wired in series creates 10 volts which is about the ideal voltage for the radio.

Martin,

Yes there a lots of power banks that put out USB power and 12VDC power and also 120VAC power, all in one battery box.? I have 2 with 120VAC output along with USB and 12VDC outlets.? They come in a verity of power levels, mine are 100 & 300W.

There are other that can power a FT817 for hours that put out USB and 12VDC.

Here is one on Amazon.? No tsure if you need 120 or 240VAC.

Mmmm, careful.? At 88 watt-hours, that's barely more than 7ah at 12v, not counting internal conversion losses.? The inverter may be able to source 100 or 300 watts, but not for long.? 300 watts from an 88 watt-hour battery will drain it in something like 15 minutes.? Of course the FT-817/818 draws considerably less - you'd likely get 5+ hours of use - but there's no Tardis-derived magic here.? Start plugging other stuff in, and the run time can drop very quickly.

When looking at these "Solar generators", the important spec to look at is the watt-hour rating of the battery.? The AC output spec is just for the inverter; it's a limit for how much (peak) power can be drawn, not for how long.

I really like the RoyPow. I chased one down refurbishes then my brother, who is also a ham, apparently ran into them independently and got me another one for christmas to use with my FT817 and other handheld gear. It has one USB-C in or out (used to charge or can be connected?to a device while not charging) and two high capacity standard USB ports, a 12v/5a coaxial output and a 12v/10a accessory style plug output. rated at 86Wh

I used one in the deer blind this year to occasionally power my 12v electric blanket.?

Using the usb-c pd output it maintains a pretty steady 12v through most of its discharge cycle.

I wanted a 5 amp rated 12V cable so use this?

I actually butchered it to put an anderson connector on it instead of the 5.5 mm barrel plug. Have an Anderson connector on the back of my 818ND.

Has a torch, charges a phone and solidly built.....actually a pretty good safety device to have in the bush.

Might also try one of these for emergency back up which should be up to the job though smaller capacity.

Greg,

Obviously one would not get one of these power packs to run like a refrig or heater.? I got a 300W unit to run my soldering gun for events like putting together Field Day.? Works great.

Yes, one needs to look at the capacity for your needs.? And many can power a rig like a FT817 and also charge for a long time ones cell phone.? A 300W unit can last a long time.

The point is there are power packs for many portable use that will supply needed power.? Some of these power packs even have wireless charges on top.

Hi Ron,

My caution is to not confuse watts with watt-hours.? Getting a 300w unit only tells you the maximum instantaneous AC power that the unit will deliver, but provides no information on how long that delivery can be maintained.? So saying "A 300W unit can last a long time" does not make sense.? Watts has no concept of time; it's watt-hours that matters.

There can be a rough correlation between the higher power (higher watts) with larger batteries (more watt-hours), but that's only cursory.? When choosing a unit, one needs to understand both the maximum output needed (watts), and total capacity (watt-hours).? Marketing-savvy manufacturers may couple a large cheap (modified sine wave) inverter with the smaller battery, preying on this confusion, with the ad copy focusing on the former and ignoring the later.? The general public often doesn't think about the difference, and because of the lower cost may get a unit that won't meet their needs.

Interestingly, you will very often find units that offer 88 watt-hours of total capacity or slightly less; I believe that's the maximum for some international shipping and airline travel reasons.

Greg,

I agree we must always look at the AHr rating of the battery when getting one of these units, nothing new.? Even for 12V batteries for our rigs we need to check these ratings.? But the internal battery is also a factor for the 12V and USB and other output units, not just the 120VAC output versions.? And there are a lot of units for 12V and USB and others for just single voltages.

With these one must also check the max current rating.? I have some good 6000 AHr units that put out 12V and USB (12000 AHr for USB), but have 3 Amp output limits.

But there are many applications where even a 100W unit will do as one wants.? An 8AHr battery is good for about any POTA event where like 5 hours use.

You'd probably be very surprised and disappointed if you look at a modified sine waveform. It's just a series of square top pulses alternating positive and negative. Same peak voltage as a sine wave with short duration pulses. I've never scoped a "pure" since wave inverter. Has anyone here ever looked?
