Collins Mechanical Filter

Can any of you give me a suggestion on what might be going on with one of my FT-818nd radio. I have two 818nd Radios but only one has a Collins Mechanical 500Hz CW Filter. I wanted to add one to the other radio so I bought one on eBay. It¡¯s the same as the other which is the XF-115C. It¡¯s my understanding that this filter is compatible with the ND versions of the 818/817. It says Collins Mechanical and Yaesu on the Filter. It was said to have been tested and ¾±³Ù¡¯²õ 500 Hz. The same filter works perfectly on my other radio. After installing the filter (all the menu settings are correct) I did not hear the distinct change in sound when turning on the filter (NAR). I assumed the filter was bad and returned it. I bought another from a different vendor. Same XF-115C Filter. Same problem. This radio is virtually literally brand new. I bought it from HRO when Yaesu announced the end of the 817/818 and am just now getting around to using it. It seems unlikely that both filters could be bad and also unlikely to be the radio as ¾±³Ù¡¯²õ brand new. When I turn on the filter (press NAR) I hear the click, no error messages but the sound doesn¡¯t change in the way ¾±³Ù¡¯²õ supposed to and as it does on the other radio. Sorry for the long question. Anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?

Hi Paul,

?

Did you try putting the filter from the good radio into the other to see if it works in there or putting the new filter into the radio with the known good filter to see if it works there or not. That would be the first obvious thing I would be trying before sending it back as faulty. When you ave two radios it is easy to swap things to see if the other radio has the same symptoms.

Have you enabled the filter in the 818 settings? It gives a choice between SSB and CW. I do not know the menu number, as I own the FT-817ND, not a FT-818ND.

Hope this helps.

You have to select the filter on the 818 in menu 38. ?It gives you the option of cw or sub.

All of the menu settings were correct. I took the filter out of the radio where everything seems to work OK and put that filter into the ¡°problem¡± radio. It did not work. My assumption is that the radio has an issue so I mailed it back to Yaesu today for an evaluation. I sent them the filter as well. Thanks to all for the advise. Very helpful. 73 to all.?
