Re: Power adjust
Tim Cailloux
Ken,
You're understanding of what the manual doesn't tell you is correct. When you are running from a battery, you get a blinky power icon at 5W. When you run off a power supply, you get no blinky power icon at 5W. You should see what I have at home - an Astron 70 amp power supply with my '817 sitting on top. It is something only a sick engineer would love. tim --- ghostusr@... wrote: I am trying to set my 817 for 5 watts power. My __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Power adjust
I am trying to set my 817 for 5 watts power. My manual says I will
have a "blinking icon" at 5 watts. Running from a Yaesu power supply that powers my 757GX, I can't get it to go to a "blinking icon". I do observe that when no icon is present, I have 8 bars showing on the PO meter. I presume this to mean I am at full 5 watts power. This is contradicting the owner's manual. Anyone else have this experience. I am following the book. Am I doing something wrong, or was the manual written by someone who doesn't use English as his first language? Thanks, Ken, AI6F |
FT-817 Transverter interfacing results
For those that wanted to know....
I finally got a hold of Yaesu today and they confirmed as many on the reflector had suggested that 100 ma on the TX ground line is about it for keying transverters/amps. It was taking 107 ma to key the DEM 10 GHZ transverter, the relays, and the 1W Qualcomm amp. The Qualcomm amp was not keying properly though. The solution was adding a relay inside the transverter so all the FT-817 sees is the one relay that actually keys the transverter, amp, and coaxial relays. Now the current is 45 ma and it works just fine.....thanks to WA1ECF for the solution. I set up portable at the Marconi site in Welfleet, MA (FN51) (as K1XP) on Saturday during the contest and was able to work as far as W2SZ so the system is playing. The DEM/FT-817 certainly makes a real sweet, very compact, portable set up for 10 GHZ 73, Clint W1LP BTW, I'm on land until mid-August |
Re: backlight display problems
Also in the menu there is an option to turn the back lighting off.

Re: Compact counterpoise for FT-817 is a Sony AN-71
Hello group,
two AN-71 make a perfect lightweight portable dipole. I use such an antenna since several years now. My best dx with such a dipole using a simple center isolator (no balun) is from Perth/VK to Cologne/DL (my QSO partner was my father, DL6PE), using 2 Watt CW (Mizuho MX-14). Looking forward to have the same fun with the FT-817 now! I have found here in the UK that the Sony AN-71 compact shortwaveAnother alternative to try is the retractable phone cable holders. like: With some thought and "2" of these + a little plastic and connectors you could make a dipole or just use half of it for a counterpoise.. I have one of these for it's intended purpose, I think you could get 10M of thin wire on to it.. JAT David |

Subject: [FT817] Portable Military 1.8 - 30Mhz Longwire for Ft-817 I am using a Racal British Army portable longwire aerial with my ATX when stationary. The aerial comes on a lightweight black plastic carrier about 10" long and is constructed of flexible wire insulated in green plastic. Along the length of the wire are shrink wrapped markers showing the freqency the antenna is a 1/4 wavelength at on each HF band. You simply unwind the aerial to say the 14 Mhz marker and it is then the correct length for a 1/4 wave. The aerial also comes with a prefitted bnc connector, and a long length of line on which is a small led weight, you throw the led weight over a tree branch or similar and can then haul up the aerial. The SWR with my Ft-817 has been perfect on all bands tested (plus a counterpoise) without any ATU. The price of these aerials at rallies brand new has been around ?10. It is lightweight and does a super job. Nato stock number 655-901. This message has been sent to help others. 73 de Philip G0ISW Yahoo! ATX won't tune
Raffy Shammay
I have had the ATX no fuss tuning using a bunch of ground wires.
I first set up an automotive spade & lug extention from the ground screw on the 817. I then cut the recommended length of "counterpoise" for each band, and tested it. Lastly I soldered all the wires together at one end, and fitted a spade/lug connector for quick connect to the 817. I also gathered the wires together into a loom and bound them together using 6 cable ties. When I want to use the ATX, I just unroll the wire bundle, plug it into the back ground lug, select the band I want, and just transmit. On all bands that i cut the counterpoise for, it's less than one bar on transmit. No fuss, no tuning, just works. When I'm finished, I disconnect, roll it up and put it back my 817 bag. Hope that helps 73 de Raffy VK2RF |
Re: NVIS Saturday afternoon test
John O. Newell
Just a quick follow-up to Keith N1XTK's report on our NVIS
test. The odd thing was that although Keith had solid copy on my signal, we had essentially one-way communication because I could barely copy his signal above the noise on 40 (and couldn't at all, on 80). I'm wondering why? Was one antenna not correctly configured? Or was there more local noise at my end? Some antenna/signal polarity issue (shouldn't be a factor with NVIS, right?)? Would be interested in any thoughts. 73 John Newell KB1FPM |
