Didn't find one at 436.025 but I seem to have the others you listed.

David,

Does your FT-817 also show birdies on 70cm (e.g. 436.025, 438.100,
438.900 and others)? I've noticed those birdies with 4 different FT-817
at the Hamvention but didn't get any comments or confirmation from other
hams regarding this problem.

Which birdies on HF did you find? The one on 7.240 MHz is very weak with
my rig.

Blinky power level icon (Was: Power adjust)

The "blinky" L3 (highest low-power level) icon appears when you select
"high" power when on battery power.

Or, more precisely, when the voltage (as indicated by the '817
VOLT display) is below 11.5 volts, from *EITHER* the internal battery
*OR* the external supply, the icon will blink when the "high" power is
selected. The blinky icon is *not* related to the internal battery -
except for the fact that you might have trouble finding 8 series AA
cells that put out 11.5 volts...

My '817 (your mileage may vary...) will put out a full 5 watts on all
bands at 11 volts or above. At 10 volts, the UHF "high" power is down
to about 4.25-4.5 watts or so and the other bands are just starting to
drop down below 5 watts.

FT-817 + 50W Linear Amp + Battery

Am looking to put my 817 portable with the THP HL-50B amp.
I'm currently using a 4.8Ah battery with about 25W PEP. That gives me
1 or maybe 2 good Pedestrian Mobile hikes on a charge.

It totally depends how much you transmit, how efficient your amp is,
and how many hours you want to operate.

Just a note of thanks to all who responded to my question about the
power icon on the 817. It is now clear to me and thank you, Barry,
for your detailed comments. Reminds me of a friend of mine, who, when
asked the time will tell you how to build a clock. Again, thanks all.

Julian, you are wrong about 50W sSB being too much for either battery
or solar power.

And 25~50W SSB is really what is needed to be effective when
communicating on 14MHz as a Pedestrian Mobile.

Hello Demetre.
I also have this problem.
My FT817 should arrive back from Yaesu today.
I sent it to them for a Power output problem and Birdies on HF also.
I'm writing up my experience. I will post it on the group shortly.

Re: Power adjust

Because it states this icon condition for
battery operation, perhaps it would have been reasonable to
realize
that it meant exactly what it said --- battery operation.
Yes that is what it says and it's correct, but it's only half the
story. We all had to guess and try to find out the other half of
what should have been in the manual!

Re: Power adjust

Hi Ken,

Frankly, the FT-817 manual is one of the better written. If you did
read what it says in the manual about INTERNAL BATTERY operation, you
would have understood that it states that the 3-bar icon flashes when
running 5-W output. Because it states this icon condition for
battery operation, perhaps it would have been reasonable to realize
that it meant exactly what it said --- battery operation. The fine
engineers at Yaesu are trying to give each of us a gentle warning
that we are really consuming our internal power source at 5 W by
blinking the icon at us. The manual writer said exactly what he
meant and likely (American) English is his first language if it is
who I think wrote it.

Logically and consistently, Yaesu decided to use the same scheme for
power indication that they have with other units such as the VX-5R.
Full power is no icon and lower powers have 1,2 or 3 bars. Guess
they figure with a VX-5R you know that you are using battery power.
For the FT-817, no icon means full RF power when using an external
power source.

Now for the commercial --- your question was asked and answered in
the FAQ for this site. The FAQ is always a good place to go first if
you have a question. Also, the power icon is explained in the Pack-
It Reference for the FT-817 by VE3AYR (how to get it is in the FAQ as
well).

The main problem with Yaesu manuals is that they don't have an
index! The Pack-It does and that by itself makes it wonderful.

I do observe that when no icon is present, I have 8 bars showing on
the PO meter. I presume this to mean I am at full 5 watts power.
This is contradicting the owner's manual. Anyone else have this

Re: Power adjust

Pres Waterman

You're understanding of what the manual doesn't tell
you is correct. When you are running from a battery,
you get a blinky power icon at 5W. When you run off a
power supply, you get no blinky power icon at 5W.
Here's how to think of it.

In any case, the various number of solid bars indicates some form of low
power. Three icons is MOST of the power, 2 is SOME of the power, 1 is a TINY
bit of power, and NONE is NOT low power, therefore full power.

Now, on batteries, you have the same exact power levels available... 1, 2,
3, or BLINKING 3 bars... blinking to get your attention that 5w is baaaaad
news for batteries.

If you think of it, 5w is either NO "low power indicator icons" if on 12v
external power ( no worries ), or a blinking power indicator icon ( DANGOR
WILL ROBINSON! ) if on precious battery power.

Re: Power adjust

Yes, the manual certainly leaves a lot to be desired. Interestingly the QST
review commented that it was an excellent manual, I think most of us here
strongly disagree with that statement. However, It sounds like your unit is
operating normally. The only time you will see the blinking icon is when you
are running on battery and the voltage is below 11 volts or so. If you are
using a power supply with 12 or 13 volts you will see no icon at all when
the power is at 5 watts.
