Before you settle on one of these amps, check out the RM Italy HLA-
150 AMP. It can be purchased from H&Y Electronics here in the USA for
a little over $200 USD. I bought one and it is very well made and
worth the money. It covers all the HF bands and will give you a
between 100 to 200 Watts out with only 1-5 watts in. It can take up
to 20 watts in.

Re: 5 watts on battery not possible

Hopefully you are using powerpoles with your equipment. If so, check out

They have a setup whereby you can run the radio off of the battery and charge it at the same time.I have used it with a voltage inverter in my car just to charge the battery and it works well.My battery is a 7ah gel cell.If you don't plug it into an ac outlet and have batteries inside the radio(such as the W4RT), the gel cell will charge your internal batteries as well

Hope this helps.........

When I first got my '817, I tried to run it at 5w with alkaline cells

60 meter mods

David Harris

I had an interesting experience over the weekend. I was on 80 meters the other night and just spun the dial up to the 60meter frequencies to see what I could hear and out of curiousity keyed the mike as everything I have read sts that the 817 needs to be modified.I was able to key it and the meteres showed modulation and power out.I didn't make any contacts as I do not have an antenna for 60 as of yet.I checked my radio and no mods had been done to it.Has anyone else experienced this, or are the bars that show up deceiving me?

Thank you,

David

used the following commands F8 BF . Not a hardware problem at all but
rather the inability to remember the DOS commands I learned in the

meters. The rig retained all my memory programming and continues to

wideband software mod for a uk ft817 ??

HI, have read thru a good few off some off the older threads

have to do to carry out the software mod to a uk supplied ft817 such
as data leads needed ?? standard pc to 817 one as per used in the
commander software ?? and also to confirm as to if there are any
features I would loose with this modification ie.any rx range loss
or repeater shifts loss, etc ?? only needing the info revelant to the
offical uk supplied ft817 hence this request. thanks for any help or
advice on this subject, it is always appreciatted.

Re: MP-1 antenna with MFJ-1954 whip?

Lee Boulineau

I am actually working out some add-ons for the MP-1,
which is a very nice portable antenna. One of those
improvements is in the whip - the MFJ-1954 should be
fine. For 10/12 meters, you can remove the coils and
substitute a 3/8-24 coupling bolt - they are 3/4" long
and will work fine. For 15, leave the coil in - it
will be very close to the bottom setting.

This morning I found a screamin' deal on a new MP-1

coil... so I jumped on it!

Since you can't really have too much antenna when
working portable QRP, I was thinking about buying an
MFJ-1954 10' telescopic whip to use as a top section
on the MP-1. Have you guys tried this, and if so,
how
did it work for you? I realize that the combination
of the MP-1 and MFJ-1954 would be a bit too long for
10/12/15 meters, but since I mainly work 20/30/40m,
it sounds like a good choice. Assuming that I don't
use it on a really windy day, will the MP-1 coil be
able to support the 10' whip without damage?

Opinions, please?

The small SELect switch is mechanical, not optical, and the innards wear
out. You cannot dissassemble it or clean it. It needs to be replaced.

posted a very good description of the optical encoder and how it
works, including the failure modes and why the reverse direction
thing occurs. Yes, that is one of the failure modes, by the way.

Looks like Yahoo yanked out the "extra" whitespace.

I'm not on the PC where I wrote the message, so I can't pull it out
of the 'Sent' folder and forward it to you. But if you go read
#26156 and can't figure it out, let me know. I'll fire up the other
machine and send you the original message. But I think if you read
that posting, you'll have a good understanding of what's happening.
Then you can make an informed decision whether or not to have it
fixed (or try to fix it yourself).

FWIW, I'm still living with the jitter in mine. It's gotten a little
worse, but I'm a "mild and lazy guy" and can still put up with it!

I observed this problem several months ago on my 817. BUT! I select a tuning steps with "SEL" knob 1kHz on SSB, CW, DIGI, and 5 kHz on FM and AM, this problem dissaperad!
You can do it on "menu" with yellow "F" (function ). Try it, maybe it will be help. Do not ask for reason Hi, just try!

Problem with "Select" optical encoder

Howard

I wonder if anyone has had this problem:

When turning the Select knob CLOCKWISE ONLY, at a moderately fast
speed, either in "dial" tuning or RIT mode, the frequencies
intermittenly reverse direction. This is NOT noticed, on my radio,
under counterclockwise rotation.

Just wondered if this was common. Have read about similar symptoms
from time to time. Has anyone had to replace the "Select" optical
encoder mechanism? I can live with it if it doesn't get any worse.
