One thing you can check for in hotel rooms..
There are sometimes very little plastic vents around the windows
that open, Usually a sliding plastic tab.

I was just on the 24th floor of a Vegas Hotel.
The windows where totally sealed..
But... A little vent opened that you could actually see outside.
Very easy to drop a weighted wire through.

It was just a petty I was without my FT817 radio :-(
That's another story which I will share with you all shortly.

Best Regards
David

Re: Need help: 817 power supply

I've had exceptionally good luck using the Yaesu accessory wall
wart. Didn't pay extra for it, just happened to have one, because
it's the same part as the charger for the VX-150 2M handheld (another
great piece of work, btw). So, if you're in the market for a great
handheld....

I have been reading about loops in various antenna handbooks.
Not only are they useful at HF, VHF and UHF ops can use them
very effectivly (unfortunatly my balcony is too small for a
20 meter loop, and it has a metal screened door...drat!)...

Anyway, here are 2 manufacturers of loops if you aren't the

Re: Which Performs Better: ATX or MP-1?

Steven L Herman

I would echo Ed's comments on hotel operating and go a step farther. I've
never been able to work a single
station yet using the '817 without having the MP-1 sticking out the window
and good grounding.
Out of four hotel stops, my only success was with a sixth floor ledge in
Cannes with a most convenient small copper water pipe running along the
ledge onto which I could clamp. I did have a view of the ocean 10 blocks
away but was next to a busy highway. Worked 19 countries in nearly as many
QSO's down to 2.5 w on both phone and cw on 10 and 15m, even getting some 59
reports and a 20-minute solid copy ragchew on 10m SSB with Israel.

I work in an office in Tokyo on the 32nd floor of a building with a great
view looking north but have a window which doesn't open and I suspect is
heavily leaded. I run a packet station on UHF and can connect with
digipeters 50km away, but HF is worthless as there's no way to ground
anything. I've tried all sorts of configurations inside the office next to
the window with the MP-1, ATX, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated on how to devise something that might work here at the hi-rise
QTH.

I've found that many hotels, especially the high-rise ones, have heavily
leaded glass. I can take a GPS and put it in front of a window and it
will see absolutely nothing, crack the window and all of the sudden it
sees everything. I haven't found a hotel yet that doesn't allow the
window to be opened at least a few inches, usually enough to stick
something out of it. Sticking a Maldol out the window usually does
fairly. I've also found that since I've got a couple of adapters between
the antenna and coax, that I can wedge it between the window and frame
by closing the window on it. If a few chips of paint scrape off by
accident, then the connectors will ground out to the window frame giving
sometimes a quite sizable counterpoise to work with. I noticed this one
evening by accident as I stuck the antenna out, all of the sudden I got
many db increase in signals as I closed the window on the connector.

Re: Loop antenna

Don

The magnetic loop antenna is excellent for QRP. If you wish to do some
research on the subject locate the 1985 book by Ted Hart, W5QTR or the
June/1986 issue of QST. In addition to it's small size, the extremely hi Q
(approximately 500) provides fantastic front end selectivity and adjacent
frequency strong signal rejection. The overall noise floor is about 1/4th
that of a vertical.

In March I published a product review for Wayne Green Publication on the MFJ
1786 loop antenna. Aside of it's somewhat high price, it is a very very
good antenna.

If you decide to build your own, you will need to very mechanical inclined
with allot of metal working shop tools.

For "Motel Mobile" operations I try to get as close to the window as
possible. The antenna normally sitting on its tripod.

Some hotels have been impossible with the noise level inherent in the

I have "heard" that at even QRP levels the FT817 is capable of clearing

Repeater Offset shows both -+ ??

Can't figure out what's going on as I have one memory channel for a
local repeater that was originally set with - offset now showing
offset as both -+. The transmit is still on the - but the icon shows
both -+. Other repeater offsets set in memory have not changed and
show either - or +. When I punch the A button under RPT nothing
happens on this channel...works ok on other memory channels.

Second strange thing (or maybe I haven't been paying attention!)
other than using RIT my VFO will only register 20hz changes in
display when tuning...with the RIT it will register to the 10hz.

OK, have I gone batty? Is it time I took a holiday from this little

I don't know about everyone else saying they were quoted a price of
$669 USD at HRO. When I checked on Friday AM HRO was selling them for
$639 UDS each!? So I got one, paid cash, and my printed sales slip
shows the price I was quoted above. Maybe they were selling so fast
they jacked the price up to match the vendor in the next booth, which
was quoting a price of $669 USD each, later on. Hummm?

The highest price I was quoted was $760 USD from Michigan Radio. When
I said I could get one from HRO much cheaper I was told, by a sales
agent at the vendor's booth, that they were "selling old stock, and
not the model with the current factory changes". I checked at the
Yaesu booth and was told that was completely untrue.

Looks like Dayton's Hamvention is not the place for the careless
shopper if they want to save money. 8->>

USER REPORT: DX, ANTENNAS (MP-1), ETC!!! Long Post...

I have been using my FT817 for several weeks and wanted to post some
feedback to the group, especially with regard to my field trials of
the MP-1 antenna, etc.

My goal with the 817 is two fold: a QRP WAS and a QRP WAC, so my
comments and evaluation will come from that perspective.

This past weekend from my QTH in the SF Bay area I was able to work
the following states and DX: S.C*, AZ*, TX*, CO*, ME, OH, WA*, AR,
VK2*, VK3*, VK4*, ZL1, VE6, and VE7* (* multiple QSO's). I was using
either my MP-1 set up in my backyard or a multi band shortened 40-10M
dipole mounted at 10' AGL. ALL CONTACTS VIA SSB. I worked 40 / 20
and 15M.

Working a VK from my QTH is total of 7,845 miles, or 1500+ miles per
watt.

(***I just missed a ZF--he couldn't get my call correct so he didn't
go down in the log...next time.)

I worked the ZL1 and the Maine QSO on the same night!

In all cases the 10' high dipole greatly out performed the MP-1
regardless of band. I even tried the cardboard box trick that Vern
suggested to reduce hard coupling with the ground. I was using a
Z-11
tuner, however I was able to get a "no bar" SWR intication from the
817 by carefully hand tuning the loading coil with out the Z-11 on
all
bands I worked.

Signal reports were generally +S3 better with the dipole even at only
10'.

Feedback about the 817 was very consistent: Great audio. R/S reports
ranged from 5 /1 to 5 /9++. My recommendation for phone mode is to
be
very aware of the mic. gain levels..I needed to run at a setting of
"70" to get good deflection on the PWR meter on the 817. I received
no
reports of flat topping or over mod. on my audio with this setting,
however.

I made all my DX QSO's responding to CQ's or "tail ending" and logged
a total of 6 VK's that I contacted in one call to their CQ in about
90
min. Bagging DX on one call running QRP is absolutely thrilling.

Without exception Hams have been very supportive of my QRP efforts
and
more than once I received a call from others eager to really see if I
was just running 5 watts. BTW..The VK guys love to work a QRP QSO.

I plan to conduct a similar side by side test this weekend in
preperation for gettting my field day set up finalized. Right now
the
dipole is looking real good.

I have also been doing extensive testing of Mark Smith's RATS CAT
GUI.
I like this application a lot, more on RATS on another post. ( have
no financial affiliation with Kingsmith software, etc., etc...).

Like to hear about similar DX / WAS success from others.

Thanks in advance.

I use Moonraker Ampro's (Dunno where they got the name). Only because they
use hollow fibreglass Rods and the ants are lighter. I have had sucess with
20m and 10m dipole using the whips but on 40 the band width is too narrow to
be of use. I find I get better results using a small spike in the ground to
a stud mount and tuning against the natural ground. I also got a Mizuho 40m
whip at the weekend it works quite well with minimum counter poise.

For those with an ATU a cheaper and probably lighter solution (the
Pro-Ams are quite heavy) might be to use plain old aluminium tubing.
You could use three different diameters that fit one inside another
so it would telescope up for transportation, and secure them with
jubilee clips.

Is it possible to buy aluminium tubing by the metre anywhere?

BTW, I think the Kenwood HT is likely to be of interest to some people
in this group, partially because it includes wide-band ALL-MODE

is there. An FT-817 and the Kenwood might be useable for full-duplex
