Re: Which Performs Better: ATX or MP-1?

Woodrick, Ed

I've found that many hotels, especially the high-rise ones, have heavily
leaded glass. I can take a GPS and put it in front of a window and it
will see absolutely nothing, crack the window and all of the sudden it
sees everything. I haven't found a hotel yet that doesn't allow the
window to be opened at least a few inches, usually enough to stick
something out of it. Sticking a Maldol out the window usually does
fairly. I've also found that since I've got a couple of adapters between
the antenna and coax, that I can wedge it between the window and frame
by closing the window on it. If a few chips of paint scrape off by
accident, then the connectors will ground out to the window frame giving
sometimes a quite sizable counterpoise to work with. I noticed this one
evening by accident as I stuck the antenna out, all of the sudden I got
many db increase in signals as I closed the window on the connector.

For "Motel Mobile" operations I try to get as close to the window as
possible. The antenna normally sitting on its tripod.

Some hotels have been impossible with the noise level inherent in the
building. I try to request as high a room as possible with an opening
window
or for true bliss a balcony.

I have "heard" that at even QRP levels the FT817 is capable of clearing
out a
Marriott using the fire alarm system on 12M.
