Re: No output on HF.

Hi you say you have output on VHF,
How much power output do you have ,
Often only one of the finals go bad so you still have low output on VHF/UHF,
So yes I think the final board is bad,
Good luck
Keep us posted,

Seems as though, YES, I can remote a rig from my apartment to my son's place.? Looks as though my 857 is the better choice between the 817 and 857.

I'll check back later to report on the project.? Not moving until Spring, so, still have lots of time to investigate.

Re: Anyone ever tried remote HF CW operation?

The remoterig solution, in case you don't know it, is kind of cool and simple. Think of the FT857 (I know, we're in the 817 group, but these radios are part of the same family).
The FT857 has a detachable front.
?
Remoterig allows you to disconnect the detachable front, connect the radio body to a remoterig box at the transmit location, connect the front panel to a second remoterig box at the operator's position, and have these operate together via the internet, as if you are operating the FT857? directly.
?
(there is some configuration work to make these remoterig boxes find each other, and some cabling work, but this is the concept).
?
The same works for a number of other radios in a similar way. For instance, it allows you to run a pair of Elecraft K3 transceivers as is they are one, in a similar way.
?
There are special measures to make CW work correctly and not have latency. I'm not a CW op myself so I can only refer to the manual here.
?
Remoterig has been around for some years and there are other solutions, which are able to cope with CGN (Carrier-Grade Network Translation) which poses challenges for remoterig, but I thought the model of operation would be interesting.
?
Availability of these boxes in the US of A is more of a challenge these days since some distributors stopped carrying them but if you are willing to work with a seller in Sweden then these boxes are in stock.
?
And the FT817 does not have detachable front and hence won't be a good solution for remoterig if you must use the FT817. But, if you are planning to build a fixed remote station, then perhaps a portable radio like the FT817 is not your best choice anyway.

I am working with an sbitx V3, which has remote capabilities..?

Maybe you can check that to see if it fits your needs..

I haven't but I probably should. I've heart\d that latency can be an issue sometimes.

In slide 11 the pdf mentions remoterig boxes, that would sit between your FT-857 head in your new home and the FT-857 body at your son's home.

CW may be able to be handled by the boxes, but AFAIK you can't connect a CW key to the FT-857 head...

?

Another option is to consider a Flex radio, they can handle CW over internet connection.

CW over a RemoteHams connection may be possible, I don't know. They used to offer a control box to allow connection to a remote radio, I'm unsure about its availability now.

?

Another option might be the RemoteTX solution, based on an RPi at your son's house controlling a supported radio and you control it with a modern browser.

?

But for CW, it only appears to support keyboard CW sending.

Re: FL110 with 817

Closing the loop and following up. I went the route of opening the base of the mic and running a wire from the cct board to the FL110 Pin 4.
Simple job, works perfectly.?
The only thing i MUST remember is only turn the amp on when I am on HF!!!!!
?

Re: FL110 with 817

Hi everyone
Some great? answers here that seem to have given me the info I need

Yes its the RF sense switching thats causing the issue - I much would rather use a ptt sensing myself.

As suggested , I will rig up a connection from the ptt pin on the data or acc port to pin 4 on the amp power connector.?
Due to a slight physical disability i find fine soldering an extreme challenge.. so working with those old din connectors is not a chore i look forward to. hihi!?
So, as I use an MD1 desk mic, it might be easier to tap onto the PTT line on its much bigger connector or inside the base itself?

Alternately, I could make a big? button connected to pin 4 on the amp that I manually hit? just before or after i press ptt each time, if i want high power this over.
Stick it on the mic base next to the PTT.

Great stuff all! Great bunch of hams we have using these brilliant tiny boxes
Hopefully we can have a 817 to 81x chat soon!

THanks for this?

Re: FL110 with 817

Jem,
?
So it is best to use a PTT keying line ?so when you press the microphone, the FT817 is in TX mode with red LED on, and the FL110 is in TX mode with red LED on and then you speak which then produced RF. ?The FT817 finals see a proper load.
?
By using RF sensing, the FL110 is in receive mode, you speak and transmit RF to the amp which senses Rf, the slow changing relay in the amp switches from rx to tx, that slow changeover means for a small amount of time the FT 817 finals don’t see a proper load and can be destroyed.
?
I have been using my FT817 and FL1110 for over 20 years with a direct PTT line without any final damage.

Hi Jem,
?
please download service manual to adjust delay time and RF sensing sensitivity .
?

WARNING -
Just a word of warning when uses this amplifier with a FT-817. Used in the RF detection change over mode, this set-up lasted about 5 min before the '817 PA module blew!

I guess the change over time of the amplifier relay was enough to leave the '817 output unterminated, and with no effective high SWR protection in the 817, caused the PA to fail.

Re: FL110 with 817

Looking at the schematic could vr201 alter the hang time?

Re: FL110 with 817

If the rx tx switch is relay activated it may be possible to alter the switch time by using a different capacitor depending on the circuit.
I have a 70w amp for my 817 which has an electrolytic which feeds a transistor controlling the relay closure, opening is instant with 1w rf. Varying the value of the cap alters the close time of relay.
Andy

Re: FL110 with 817

Hi Jem,

As convenient as it might be to use RF sense for PTT I think it falls far short of satisfactory for SSB operation as you have clearly demonstrated. I reckon it would be much better to take the PTT line from the accessory socket on the radio and interface it to pin 4 on the amplifier accessory socket to reliably switch it to TX.?

FL110 with 817

Hi?
I was wondering if anyone has any tip on this combo
.
it seems to work ok but as the 817 is so low power , the T/R switching on the amp keeps cutting in and out on ssb with the audio.. When Im at full voice its fine, but on pauses as i take a breath (yes I do that!) it? goes to RX again,, meaning every over is on/off/on/off and choppy. I need faster tx/attack... but longer "hang time" to stay in tx after i shut my pie-hole a few seconds.

Does anyone us has used this combo know if there is an adjuster in the amp or mod for this.??
Any thoughts?

Re: Solar Generator for portable power

Yep!? Example, attached.? This is an "AC Anywhere" 140w inverter, the kind you plug into your car's 12v Accessory outlet, driving a 60w incandescent bulb (a non-reactive load), but all the modified sine wave inverters I've tested look pretty much the same.? The inverter in the HOWEASY should be very similar.? All those edges are radiating a bazillion harmonics.

My first pass at an off-grid solar / battery setup for my Shack included a 1kw modified-sine wave inverter, only because I got it free.? I was figuring a few birdies that I could work around.? Nope.? It wiped out the ENTIRE HF spectrum, wall to wall, 80 meters through 10.? I swapped that out for a Victron pure sine wave unit, and all is peaceful and quiet.

Your switching to a simple battery setup, backed up with solar and an MPPT controller is perfect for what you're doing.? It might be worth getting a small inverter, preferably a pure sine wave unit since they've come way down in price recently, just as a backup for around the house if the lights go out.? Run a LED / CF lamp, charge your laptop or cell phone, whatever.? Good Ham Swap item to keep your eyes open for.

Thanks to all those who replied on this subject.? ?Lots of good advice from practical experience.? ?Yes, Greg the HOWEASY has a modified sine wave inverter.? Based on what I have learned I am abandoning the idea of using a small, cheap solar generator.? ?I already have a folding 60 watt solar panel with MPPT controller and a suitable small 12 volt battery charger.? ?I will simply but a small LifePo4 battery in the 10 amp hour range and call it done.
