Parallel Guide for Hammer K3 mk3

Sam Blasco was my original inspiration for a parallel guide. Here is a video of Sam using his …

?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=9AHMTuw_Ghg&list=WL&index=20&ab_channel=SamBlasco

?

Mike Kreinhop made a great one using an Incra LS25 positioner ...

?

?

?

?

?

Then, two years into Covid and many tools are not available, I decided to use what I had and build my own. An Incra Positioner was out of the question, it is not available in Australia, with local versions costing upwards of $1000 (AUD).

?

?

The main component was a 1m length of 8020 aluminium extrusion, identical to the one I used for my router table fence ...

?

?

?

The fence came from an Incra mitre fence (which had been used with the original F&F I made a few years ago, and discarded when the reversed F&F was built).

?

This is what I came up with ...

?

?

?

Steel angle brackets are used to connect the base to the wagon ...

?

?

These were then shaped and given a wooden cover for aesthetics ...

?

?

The L-bracket on the underside which ensures the fence base is square to the side of the slider. This is adjustable ...

?

?

In fact, everything is adjustable on this fixture. The Incra fence is attached with small L-clips, and the side screws enable the fence to be moved in-and-out on each side ...

?

?

The base (rail) is a double sandwich of 8020 lengths ...

?

?

The lower rail is 400mm long, and the upper rail (connecting to the fence) is 900mm long. ?The fence is 470mm long and 40mm wide.

?

The lower rail has a sliding 6mm bolt (which can slide the full length) ...

?

?

?

The uppe rail, as shown here upside down, moves on and is squared by two UHMW slides. It also has two positions for the 6mm bolt - one at the rear and one near the front. These enable the full length of the rails to be used.

?

?

?

?

?

There is a total of 610mm width of cut when ripping. The scale on the upper rail is a steel rule. Alongside is an adjustable marker (I use the front edge) ...

?

?

?My K3 is a short stroke with the crosscut fence at the front of the slider wagon. The depth stop on this perfectly is aligned with the parallel guide.

?

The depth stop on the Incra fence slides along its face ...

?

?

The rails are attached via bolts to the side of the wagon, as shown earlier. The knobs allow for easier adjustment the full length of the slider ...

?

?

This enables boards of varying lengths to be held securely (stop-to-stop) ...

?

?

This is brilliant, Derek!? I've started a file with ideas for a parallel guide for my C3 41, and this goes to the top of that list!

I don't know if you can beat Brian Lamb's fence for simplicity and effectiveness.
There's no need to square another piece of fence to the blade/slider.
Brian's fence and Mac's clamps make an awesome duo.

I ordered two recently. First off Brian was a pleasure to work with. He was responsive to my many (occasionally confused) questions. I got the guides and a square. I used the square to calibrate my crosscut fence. It’s super helpful to get the fence square.?

The guides are so nice to have. Two is the way to go if you can. Super accurate cuts.?

Unfortunately buying Brian's version is not feasible for us in Oz due to the huge price we have to pay for the freight and dollar conversion rates and as nice as they are I for one can't justify the end price. I have bought two DRO's from China and the magnetic tapes fit under the standard tape on the cross cut fence so the visual appearance and reading against the cursor is not affected. I am lucky enough to have two cross cut fences as well and a length of 2040/60 between them does the job. There is a lot of things available in the US we simply do not have access to due to the end price after importing so we have to make do. I would think that importing Brian's parallel guides would add at least 50% to the dollar figure they are sold for in the US.?

Chris, you say:

“I would think that importing Brian's parallel guides would add at least 50% to the dollar figure they are sold for in the US.”

It sounds like you don’t have any idea what it really costs to get Brian’s fences here? Or am I incorrect??

Brian is a really good guy. Saying such a blanket statement may well lead potential customers astray.?

I have imported his tools. Well worth the costs.?

Warm regards,
Lucky

Nothing close to 50%, but shipping has gotten expensive. Currently a DRO parallel fence (which would be close to the most costly because of insurance value and weight) will run roughly $200 in shipping (15%). An analog fence would be about $185 (25%). A square is roughly $140 (40%), level is roughly $100 (24%). I will say that shipping time can be excessive, I think USPS gets it there fairly fast, but I’ve had items sit in customs for weeks, which I can’t control. Note that pre-Covid, I could ship the DRO fences for about $110, take that for whatever it’s worth.

As for currency exchange, nothing I can do about that and I suspect most of your product you purchase has the same worth correlation once currency differences are calculated for.

So, I hope that helps. We have sent product pretty much around the world, South Africa, Syria, UK and Ireland, Germany, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. I’m sure there are others, but that’s what comes to mind at the moment.

Bill, first and most importantly, I am offering a free design and not in any way in competition with Brian .. whose work I salivate at! I have no doubt that Brian’s offerings make my design look like the toy it is.

But … it is free to those who, like us in Oz, cannot justify the cost involved in importing Brian’s parallel guide from the US. Lucky asked me for details recently, and I have responded. I don’t get the subsequent defensive attack here. If you know anything about me, you will know I have been freely offering tool designs for decades.

Hi Derek:

And to reiterate my thanks, Derek I appreciate your details, including the how and why. Apart from saving money, which is generally important to all of us, what I’m seeing with your design is a whole different feature-set compared to a traditional parallel fence. Namely, because your fixture has a fence which is parallel to the trajectory of your sliding table, and since it is very accurately adjustable, you can quickly adjust your fixture and then rip relatively small pieces of timber with ease. As a hardwood user myself, I can appreciate how easy it would be to dial in such cuts using your fixture. That’s definitely got my attention.?

Thanks a lot for sharing.?

Warm regards,
Lucky

Lucky, I reply here for clarification and not for debate or to criticize. ?You should know as well as Chris and I (since were are all in Oz), that the shipping costs are a small part in importing Brian’s (or anyone else’s) tools. Taking Brian’s Felder parallel guide as an example, this is $1300 USD before shipping. That is $1920 in AUD (and Andy is suggesting that one should purchase two]. Add in shipping now, and we are over 4K. Again, this is not about Brian; it is about what some (like myself) can realistically spend before my wife kills me! :)

Brian, I think Derek sums it up and details the costs. I think you supply a wonderful range of products but for most woodworkers in Oz they are simply not value for money, that is not your fault or mine it simply is what it is. Ten years ago we had better than parity and I was importing Clearvue cyclones by the multiple pallet loads because it was affordable to sell them here at a decent retail cost so I do understand the problem more than most. Clearvue Cyclones are no longer sold here because they have been priced out of the market, the transport costs to import five units went from $3000 to $15000.?

Derek,
Did you say you had plans for your parallel guide??
While I am in the US, not OZ as you say, I too cannot justify or afford Brian Lamb’s wonderful tool.
I have a Hammer C3-31 and your parallel guide may be just what I need… to fix my sliding table flaws.

Chris, I did include the important dimensions in the descriptions above. That should be enough to go on. Fittings differ not only between countries, but also from store-to-store, so I leave it up to others to build to what they can find. I do not do plans, per se. But feel free to email me if you run into any difficulties. I shall also be placing this article on my website at some stage (gotta clean up the earlier versions as well).
