Re: Lost Braking

I have used a single VFD on two machines, where one was used often and the other occassionally.? ?VFD to twist lock plug,? unplug one and plug in the other.? ?The usual caveat about NEVER unplugging a motor from the VFD when the motor is running apply.? ?But it was simple.? ? Further, I had two 3 wire control circuits -- I used some old phone wire I think.? ?Each of those ended with a standard 3 prong plug, and wires from a 3 prong outlet running up to the VFD controls.? ?No power of any kind to the outlet, obviously, it was just a convenient way to swap input switches at the same time.? ?It was cheap and simple.? ?One of those machines is now gone, but the Yates jointer is still running via the pair of plugs.??

I didnt got that route with my KF700S (2001), instead using an RPC.? ?But I wouldn't feel nervious doing it.??

Bob,

I am curious about the electrical design of your machine. From your description it seems that a motherboard is used and Felder is not able to troubleshoot, thus a full replacement is recommended.

I am not sure if the circuit board is indeed obsolete, i.e., are they going to replace with a different design circuit board and rewire the machine or just replace the circuit board (may be a newer version) with essentially same wiring. The reason this might be important is that some users may be able to do the later themselves. I am thinking perhaps half of the $4K is for the tech to do the installation.

I have not added a VFD to a Felder but if I had to do it, I would likely go the following route.

Power the VFD independent of the machine. You can choose 3 phase input or single phase input per VFD capability. I would pursue this for following reasons:

1) If VFD gets power thru machine then it’s power will be cycling with machine Start/stop circuit. This will disable VFD from appropriately executing the shut down features like braking etc.

2) Due to high inrush current of input capacitors it is better to avoid cycling VFD power, every time motor is turned off.

3) If there are any protection/monitoring functions VFD input power will remain connected, even though the motor won’t run.

For multiple motors a switch is cheap and allows use of a single VFD. For example, this pops up on Amazon. It is not for hot switching and I would study some more if I was to select one but sharing just as a data point for price.

Baomain Universal Rotary Changeover Switch SZW26-63/D303.3 660V 63A 3 Position 3 Phase https://a.co/d/do0CJgW

Next, I would follow the start/stop circuit and use those signals to remotely turn on/off VFD.

Either way you wire, if there are any monitoring and protection features they will need to be satisfied. At least this way the machine is not able to remove power from VFD. You may ask Felder Tech, who apparently knows the electrical system if there are any such features. I am sure he will refrain from directing you but should be able to provide some details.

Lastly, I personally will not run router spindle any faster on account of bearings.

Just my $0.02

A selector switch between the motors could be done, but it definitely complicates things. If you have to pay an electrician to do it, and if you can find one competent, it’s likely going to cost more than a second VFD. Of course three motors complicates it even more, so the cost may be worth it.

Re: Felder customer service update on my K700S

Hi Wade,

You may want to check on lemon law for recourse which in my state (Ohio) applies to retail goods not just cars. The manufacturer would be responsible for 300% of the purchase price plus attorney fees if a legal judgement is made in your favor.? It's unfortunate but you may have to resort to an ultimatum of fixing your machine by x and x date or else you will pursue legal action.? I've been down this road myself with a dealer and distributor, neither wanted to accept a returned machine and they made adjustments even took it offsite for additional calibration.? The final go around the machine still didn't work quite right and the dealer said they would give me partial credit to trade up on a higher end machine. A younger self would have lost it at such a ridiculous suggestion instead I told them legal recourse was my only remaining option which I was going to pursue.? A few days later I met with an attorney, they wrote up the facts and sent copies to dealer and distributor who then picked up the machine along with full reimbursement the following week.

Regarding your question about techs....? Stiles is a company I was working with when obtaining quotes for upgraded equipment they referred me to Mueller which is a regional company in my area. They sell and service machines for several brands, your area is going to be different but give Stiles a call or maybe Mueller 216-372-7102 Jim Perkins they can refer you to someone.

I received my K700S Q4 last year, no problems except the bump on the rip fence where the cast and stamped top meet. I attributed that to the class of machine I bought but seeing the recent post regarding the out of round wheels I will take a closer look. I have DRO rip and larger outrigger with analog scales. If you wanted to compare setup feel free to reach out.

Re: Felder customer service update on my K700S

Hi Wade,?

That sounds very frustrating. I can tell you that I just received some parts to upgrade my KF700SP to DRO rip fence configuration, among the parts are the revised support/guide wheel (it rolls very smoothly!), and a rip fence extrusion in perfect condition. I actually didn't request the rip fence, and they also sent multiple other parts I didn't request, looks like I'll be sending some items back. As far as the rip fence goes, if you're getting damaged parts it's probably a combination of less-than-adequate packing, and rough handling by the delivery people.?

Regarding the rip fence calibration, as mentioned by others I'd absolutely request a replacement ruler, or just flip it over and use your own. The bar shouldn't be related to measurement issues unless you have a really wicked skew going.?

Anyways, just wanted to let you know that Felder?can/does?deliver the goods, it sounds like you're getting ravaged by a planetary alignment of poor communication, packing, and rough handling.?

Regarding commissioning services, I know there are a handful of guys in the Minneapolis area who will commission machinery. Last time I checked (several years ago) the labor rate was something around $100/hr. That being said, they were not Felder-specific, and would only be able to help with the mechanical commissioning, the electrical would be a whole different ball game.?

If you haven't already, reach out to David Best to inquire about purchasing a PDF copy of his Survival Guide. I've referenced it extensively while fine-tuning my KF700SP, it took me awhile but his documentation and photos are invaluable, and I have my KF700 cutting like a dream, couldn't be happier.?

Best wishes on getting your issues resolved.

Further, the test results focus on only one element of sanding, which is amount of waste. This is similar to video of woodworkers taking gorgeous, gossamer shavings with a handplane, which are then held up for “proof” of the performance of the plane or blade. The real test is the quality of the surface on the wood which is left behind in association with the stated grit along with the time to do this and the distance the paper can go.?This kind of result requires a prodigious amount of experimentation and experimentation time. Consequently, what we have here is a partial data point for the wood involved.

The other interesting factor for me was the way the machine moved. The pattern is familiar to me as I use this, having learned to do so from car detailers using polishing machines on the bodies of cars to buff paint. The “criss cross” pattern ensures even coverage. I do wonder how many woodworkers who sand regularly do this as well.

I should point out that, while I have been sanding wood for 40 years, my go-to is a handplane (better surface and more efficient). I do have sanders from both Festool and Mirka, and my preferred paper is Mirka Abranet. What I like about Abranet is that the mesh permits maximum dust extraction, and that this reduces dust scratches, and so improves both efficiency and surface quality.?

Hi Ed,

F coupling was replaced with P coupling with Xroll around 2004. You can still get extension tables that mate with P coupling. My 2001 KF700 has F coupling so I had to purchase P coupling, when I got K975 with xroll, so I could continue to use Aigner pressure modules.

Alternatively, John Kee, made 2 simple P couplings out of ply wood and attached a steel bar between them. This way he can use F channel accessories on Xroll.

I believe David Best has machined P couplings to hold some accessories.

On a different note, has anyone else ordered a saw recently and notice that it does not include any F coupling bars on the slider? I ordered extra F channel supports and have no way to attach them to my slider. My old K700 that I ordered over 20 years ago came with a connecting bar that ran almost the entire length of the slider. One would think that the new saws would come with these or that the salesman would simply add it to your saw when ordering your unit with support extensions. One of my extensions fits nicely on the rear of my unit and the other is a very expensive paper weight. I was told that they would make good on this and send me the appropriate slider attachments. Unfortunately, this has fallen between the cracks when dealing with my other issues. Communications has been frustrating and exhausting.?

If the rip fence is not accurate, first and foremost, replace the scale. It’s not uncommon to find scales printed incorrectly, first thing I did when I got my machine 20+years ago.?

The wheel, what size diameter, width and hole size are they? McMaster has a lot of options, I would see if you can get a replacement that works better.

Re: Lost Braking

Hi Bob,

VFD’s would work… but a few questions. What size motors, I’m assuming you already have three phase, are you wanting to continue to use three phase or convert to single phase input using the VFD to convert to three phase? Do you also have a separate scoring motor or is it belt driven, if you even have scoring?

Two VFD’s would eliminate a lot of issues in the stock Felder electrical system. You could wire one motor to each VFD, use the e-stop and start string for both VFD’s and that would eliminate the whole selector switch portion of the machine. You do of course double the cost of the VFD’s and depending upon the size of the motors, that may or may not be much of an issue.

Nice thing about two would be that you could set a pretty aggressive stop time on the saw, and the shaper as well if you used a braking resistor on the one for the shaper. The internal braking on most vfd’s wouldn’t be adequate to stop heavy shaper tooling in less than 5-10 seconds.

When my vintage 2004 KF500 S did not apply braking to the saw blade, I contacted Felder for help.? In a series of e-mails with Timothy Kennedy at Felder Group USA, I received the bad news that the repair is expensive.? My electrical system is obsolete, and no parts are available.? To restore braking, a new main populated circuit board is required and that requires a technician come and rewire my machine.? The total labor and travel estimated cost alone was $4,374.94.
?
The saw is useable and like most table saws, let the blade coast to a stop.? Although the braking feature is highly desirable, the cost of repair is too much.? The support from Timothy at Felder was quick and detailed, but had no alternative to up dating my machine.? He also sent me the schematic for my machine.? I was curious to see if a pair for VFD’s could be integrated into the saw.? Other than preserving the requirement that all the microswitches are closed, perhaps the VFDs could take over motor control.? Remoting their control pads to the overhear saw guard/dust collector would give soft start and braking.? And for the shaper give forward or reverse rotation and variable speed.? The variable speed could eliminate belt changing if the torque is adequate for the job, and spindle could be run at better RPM’s for router bits.

Most likely I’ll live without braking but must wonder how difficult it would be to run the saw and shaper with VFD’s.? Anyone have the same experience with older machines and what do you think of using VFD’s?
