Thank you all for the feedback. Sounds like worth trying. I also reuse discs for hand sanding. Good to know about issues with edge sanding.

Lost Braking

When my vintage 2004 KF500 S did not apply braking to the saw blade, I contacted Felder for help.? In a series of e-mails with Timothy Kennedy at Felder Group USA, I received the bad news that the repair is expensive.? My electrical system is obsolete, and no parts are available.? To restore braking, a new main populated circuit board is required and that requires a technician come and rewire my machine.? The total labor and travel estimated cost alone was $4,374.94.
?

The saw is useable and like most table saws, let the blade coast to a stop.? Although the braking feature is highly desirable, the cost of repair is too much.? The support from Timothy at Felder was quick and detailed, but had no alternative to up dating my machine.? He also sent me the schematic for my machine.? I was curious to see if a pair for VFD¡¯s could be integrated into the saw.? Other than preserving the requirement that all the microswitches are closed, perhaps the VFDs could take over motor control.? Remoting their control pads to the overhear saw guard/dust collector would give soft start and braking.? And for the shaper give forward or reverse rotation and variable speed.? The variable speed could eliminate belt changing if the torque is adequate for the job, and spindle could be run at better RPM¡¯s for router bits.

Most likely I¡¯ll live without braking but must wonder how difficult it would be to run the saw and shaper with VFD¡¯s.? Anyone have the same experience with older machines and what do you think of using VFD¡¯s?

I am surprised that you didn¡¯t get any results contacting Ruan, did you ever call him and talk to him? Emails can be ¡°avoided¡± too easily at times. As for commissioning, I¡¯ve helped several folks locally over the years, but haven¡¯t heard of any independent contractor types out there doing it.

If the rip fence is not accurate, first and foremost, replace the scale. It¡¯s not uncommon to find scales printed incorrectly, first thing I did when I got my machine 20+years ago.?

The wheel, what size diameter, width and hole size are they? McMaster has a lot of options, I would see if you can get a replacement that works better.

I'd commission?the Attorney General's office and maybe get an attorney involved. And find another vendor who can supply and fulfill your needs unlike the one you previously entrusted.

Re: How do you store your Lamb Tool Works Parallel Fence?

There are also lightening holes in the back of the mounting head, 5/8¡± diameter. I would do the same style you did, but mount the blocks vertical and stick two 1/2¡± dowels out of the top surface to engage in the holes in the head. Then they are captive and can¡¯t get accidentally knocked off the wall. A slight lift up to clear the dowels and take them off the hanger/mount.

Mine live of the machine 90% of the time and if I have to take them off, I have a rolling cart nearby that they sit on until they go back on the machine.

Pics might show this better than my explanation.

Re: sandpaper test

I have and I like it very much.? I still have paper from Klingspor and Abranet which I've used with Xtract.? I haven't had any swirl marks.? I haven't noticed THAT much difference between it and other mesh-type abrasives, and have used them together.? I do find it seems to last longer making changing sheets less frequent.? Jeff

What is the deal with + on grits, like 80+, 220+?

Re: sandpaper test

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have a few boxes of it that I¡¯ve been going through for a couple months. It does remain sharper for longer than the abranet and autonet that I¡¯m used to if you¡¯re sanding wide flat surfaces. However it begins to degrade easily if you¡¯re sanding edges or anything that isn¡¯t a wide flat surface. As soon as the edges in the wavy pattern catch on something, it causes the abrasive media to come loose.?
To give you an example of what I¡¯m talking about, sounding something like a cabinet door with a 2-2.5¡± wide door frame, inevitably the paper will catch on the inside corner of the door as you pass over it.?
On the plus side, it is cheaper than the mirka abranet, pricing is on par with autonet. I¡¯m still thinking of stocking it for flat surface sanding but most of their tasks will be reserved for abra/autonet. I like to use up spent discs with a round paper sanding block for hand sanding edges and other applications.?

Re: Which blade #sawsetup

My local guy said drilling the arbor out to 30mm was easy, but drilling the pin holes was not. It would have been way to expensive. I just gave my 10¡± blades to my son, as he could use them on his SawStop,

Forrest is probably better equipped than your typical saw sharpening shop.

Re: Which blade #sawsetup

FWIW, I sent my WWII¡¯s to Forrest for sharpening and had them drill out for the braking pins. Not expensive, worked great. I expect most sharpening services will do this if you have a collection of nice blades already.

The shop is full of work in progress! The curve window door unit is almost done. That has been one of the ore challenging units I have built!
Put the Soukup press to work last couple days pressing window sash.

Re: #shopconstruction Air treatment recommendations #shopconstruction

I concur with Alex's auto drain valve recommendation, as well as implementing "smart" pneumatic supply distribution.

A 60 gal tank isn't a lot of reservoir capacity for a continuous air need like a WBS or CNC - the air will flow through it before condensing any moisture. Adding another reservoir tank as large as possible helps the air to cool before it hits the end use, as large as possible. The other big help is to consider the size of the plumbing system (not the ID, the air volume!!) designed to encourage supply air condensation back to the intended drain points. If the water condenses out naturally before it hits the end point, you've won over the long-term operating costs of an air dryer unit, in my opinion.?

I estimate my plumbing system is over 100 gallons of reservoir in addition to the primary compressor tank - and it makes a big difference, the manual drains-of-last-resort and the end branches accumulate nearly zero condensate. The moisture filters fail-safe feeding the CNC are still in good order after 4+ years of service.

Hi Jay,

I think the first thing needed for pretty much any compressor installation is an automatic drain valve.? As moisture (and oil) condenses and gathers on the interior walls of the compressor tank, the liquids run down to the bottom of the tank where one will find a conveniently located drain valve.? It is so conveniently located that many of us forget to use it until there is a significant accumulation of liquid, at which point we have already ruined a finish we are applying, or already pumped water through several tools.

To help minimize the impact water and oil have on our tools and projects I installed an automatic drain valve in place of the not so convenient drain valve.? There are a number of types and sizes available.? Here is one I found on Amazon.? Automatically draining the condensed moisture will reduce the need for an air dryer or desiccant moisture traps.

Good luck,

Alex

Aside from filter and regulator what are you guys using for removing or preventing moisture from air lines? I don't think I need super dry air such as fine finishing I only need to ensure I don't push excessive moisture into pneumatic devices. There is a higher end separator for $900 water/oil/carbon/regulator or mixed review amazon models for $200 that might be good enough, or refrigerated air dryers at that same price of $1,000 or so for my CFM.? I like set and forget but I don't mind recharging beads periodically based on my use likely a long time between those intervals.

Re: Which blade #sawsetup

I have the Felder scoring blade. The width can be adjusted to fit whichever blade you are running.

Based on recommendations from this group I ordered a couple of Tenryu blades. One is a rip blade and the other is a fine cross-cut blade. I could not find a flat-top Tenryu, but a local saw shop had a 12¡± Amana with the right arbor and pin holes so I had them grind it flat. That works pretty well for narrow slots.

Ian, I would order the scoring blade from Felder and many here in this group like Tenryu blades. Their triple chip grind blade is a great around blade IW-25080D3 250mm or IW-300100D3 300mm.?
