Anybody have old speakers laying around?

Bill Salopek

My '93 GL's speakers have rotted out...actually, it's probably only one
or two of them...I know the right front dash speaker is bad.

Has anybody upgraded their speakers and have their old ones laying
around? Wanna sell 'em?

On another note...perhaps someone has bought replacements that work
really well and aren't very expensive?

Re: Anybody have old speakers laying around?

Eckhard,
Front dash speaker removal is covered in issue #14 of EuroVan Update. There
are some nice photos showing the grill and speaker. Basically there are
plastic catches that hold the speaker grill in place. Careful lifting and
gently bending of the tabs will get it off.

Yes indeed.... those are exactly the same wheels used on the EVC. Guess
they just have to carry a little extra weight on the Rialta. ;-)

What kind and size tires did you get with your Rialta?

Check AutobyTel and CarPoint on the web. They'll point you to the nearest
dealer who will sell you an EVC for 5% over dealer invoice. It's no hassle
and pretty simple. We'll be picking up ours on Wednesday from the local
dealer who (coincidentally) happens to be 4 miles away.

Here is the info on our '99 Rialta (a big EVC :-)). I don't know if these are
the same steel wheels used on the regular EV and EVC.

Steel wheels with the following stamped on them:
6Jx15H2 DIN
DOT D15x6
VW 7D0 601 027

The GAWR front is 3527 lbs, rear is 3968 lbs. GVWR is 7275 lbs.

Wrong! The EVC's weight is NOT distributed evenly over all 4 wheels. The
front carries more load than the rear. The Winnebago door sticker indicates
that the front 2 wheels of our '97 EVC must carry a GVWR of 3329 lbs which
means each front wheel must carry 1665 lbs. It would also be desirable
that the wheels and tires be selected so they're capable of carrying more
than that to give you a little margin of error in case of overload
conditions. The Michelin Agilis 51 tires and the Goodyear Cargo G26 tires
both are rated to carry 1875 lbs max load. I would think that the wheel
should be rated at least as high as the tires.

New EVC purchase

Sheldon H. Winick

Tad,

>> The sales person I spoke told me
>> they would never discount the price
>> because they really need $36k for
>> the EVC.

Well, my answer to that sales person would be that I need a reasonably
discounted price so I could afford to ENJOY the EVC. I'd also tell him that
I'd never buy the vehicle for the window sticker price because I also "need
the money." You might also remind him that while he says he really needs
$36k for the EVC, you don't have to purchase it from him and therefore
"need" to take your business elsewhere. ;-)

A dealer deserves to earn a fair profit margin on the vehicles he sells, and
the consumer deserves to receive a fair price for the vehicle he purchases.
Window sticker price, with the exception of certain vehicles such as the GM
Saturn line, generally includes at least a 10% -15% profit margin PLUS
dealer hold-backs and other incentives which can be quite sizeable.

I believe someone posted the actual dealer cost figures for the EVC a while
back which you should be able to find in the EV-Update Archives. That would
be a good starting point for negotiation. Call a few dealers on the east
coast. I'm sure you'll be able to find one who will be more than happy to
sell you a EVC at a reasonable price.

I smell gasoline from the engine compartment of my 93 5cyl EV. I have
replaced all fuel lines, even the tiny connector lines, yet the smell
persists. I have two guesses, both related to the vapor recovery
system. Either my charcoal canister is releasing the fumes, instead of
trapping them and they somehow get into the engine compartment, or it is
the little black magnetic valve on the firewall that opens to release
the fumes into the injection system. It could also possibly be a
leaking injector seal, but the smell is on the right side, the side
where the battery is located. I have tried to pin it down but I can't
find the source. Does anyone have any ideas? Not knowing where the
fumes come from makes me a bit nervous, since I only carry a small fire
extinguisher.
I hope someone knows the answer . . .

EVC Questions / Wheels / Load Capacity

Larry Schellhase

My concerns were generated when no one would or could give me specific
data about wheel load capacity. Also, Tire Rack has wheels for the EV
and the MV but not the EVC. The one wheel I found that had a posted
load rating was 1431 - I assume that is pounds and I assume you
multiply by 4 to see fit it will support a vehicle (if anyone has data
that contradicts my assumptions - please tell me)

The curb weight for the EV, MV and EVC is respectively 4220, 4348 and
5235. The GVWR is 5600, 5798 and 5997.

The GVWR for the MV and the EVC are so darn close that I would think
the alloys VW puts on the MV should work on the EVC. I wish I could
get someone to provide me with data that confirms this assumption.

Re: EVC Questions / Wheels

Larry, Bob,
Thank you for the comments about the alloy wheels. I agree with Bob. I
think
alloy is much stronger than steel, though the design of Rondo looks
like more
frail to me.
Why does VW put the steel wheels to the EVC? There might be some good
reasons.

Thanks,

Re: EVC Questions (thank you)

John,
Springfield VW is the dealer I trying to buy EVC from! Although a sales
person I
talked was knowledgeable and friendly, he would not give me discount
even a bit.
Are they a good dealer?

Some dealer, for instance Alexandria VW, told me they didn't have EVC
in stock
but I could place an order. But they seem to tell me a lie. They might
want to
sell a normal EV to me. According to Springfield VW, they are a only EVC
qualified dealer in the DC area.

Thanks,
Tad

Re: EVC Questions (thanks)

Sheldon,
Thank you again for the comment. The sales person I spoke told me they would
never discount the price because they really need $36k for the EVC.
Also he said there was no VW dealer who can handle with the EVC within the DC
area. It is just the low of demand and supply. I think the $3k
difference is worth to few hours travel, but I'm start to thinking to buy a
normal EV or wait for the 2001 EVC.

According to the VW web site, Rondo is described as the following.

These wheels feature high quality casting and a smooth finish. They are
specially engineered for strength and durability, while the strong alloy reduces
unsprung weight for even better handling. Plus, the wheels are rust-resistant
and easy to maintain. Wheels are sold separately and include caps where
applicable.

I've just thought the alloy wheels are stronger than the steel wheels, but I
should have read through the archives before I post the question.

Thanks,
Tad

92 EVC5 Cruise Control

TYA

Well 9 hours into the cruise control installation we have gotten back the
high beams, the horn, and the flasher.

The problem was absolutely filthy contacts and interior on the donor cruise
control arm and switch. You can't believe how small these bits will come
apart after cleaning the heck of a bunch of this stuff it works.

The only problem we are left with the cruise control doesn't work. The
cruise switch has been tested extensively for continuity and function, from
the switch to the stock, to wiring harness to the loom.

The vacuum pump works when we apply power to it, and the pump generates
suction. The problem is you can't bench test stuff that only goes active
at 30 kmh or faster.

The remaining questions are:
1. Can anyone fax me the pages from Bentley on troubleshooting the cruise
system?
2. I would like a list of the relays by position and number from a vehicle
with auto, air, cruise. Alternately if you know what position the
relay(s) or relay for cruise is I would like to know what the relay # is
and the position I should find it in.

Re: EVC Questions (thanks)

Tad,
There also may be a difference in the center seats on the 2000 MV that would
allow them to face either forward or back. The center seats also have
shoulder rather than lap belts. This is already on the German vans and I'm
really not positive we will get it on US vans.

Re: Cruise/ Flasher Relay 92 not working EVC 5

Chris Noeske

We are trying to install a EV cruise control unit from a wreck on 92
Eurovan camper. Everything has gone together so far but the cruise control
doesn't work and neither do the 4 way flashers or horn.

Check the following.

1) Electrical connections in steering column.
2) Do the turn signals work? If so check the contacts on hazard light
switch.
3) Did you install The VSS in the back of the speedometer?
4) The VSS connection from the instrument panel to the Cruise control
computer is made using a jumper on the fuse block.
5)The pin for the 12v connection for the cruise, as shown in the electrical
diagrams, is used by Westfalia in the campers. You have to use an adjacent
pin.

Questions any one have an idea what relay the flasher is. Not listed in
my
operators manual and I am still waiting for the service manual.

2. What fuse or circuit number is for the cruise control in early
eurovans,
cruise circuit is not listed in the manual or fuse box for my 92 EVC.

3. What circuit is the horn on?

Reg
92 EVC5 'moose mobile'

Dear TYA
According to my German Repair manual, which covers the 90-97 EV, German
version, the relay for the flasher is in the #6 position, that is the
one on the top row, all the way to the right.
The fuse for the horn is #13. According to this manual there is no fuse
for the cruise control, probably because they did not install it in the
German version. The relay for the horn is #11, and a 53 should be
printed on the relay (provided you have dual tone horns).
Sorry, this is all I can find. Hope it helps.

EVC Questions / Wheels

Larry Schellhase

Tad, the EV wheels will fit the EVC, however, I have not found anyone
at VW who will assure me that they have a load rating that will support
the extra weight of the EVC.

Tire Rack does not have any aftermarket wheels for
the EVC although they have several for the EV. The only wheels I have
found that state that they were designed to support the EVC are the
Projektzwo Wheels
, they are
relatively expensive - about $2K for the set.

Let me know if you find other wheel choices for the EVC, for the time
being I have learned to live with the wheel covers.

EVC do not have alloy wheels but steel wheels. Can I
use the optional Rondo alloy wheels
for the EVC?
