Re: clutch and transmission advice
Just this past weekend I noticed my manual transmission leaking,
Toward the engine side of the tranny is a diamond shaped plate with "VW" deeply embossed. The two bolt heads holding the plate were beaded with tranny oil (thick and viscous.) Don't know what this plate is for. I took my breaker bar and tweaked each bolt maybe 1/8 turn. What should the correct level be. Anyone know? Should one change this oil at say 50,000 (where I am now) Looking for ideas, STEVE with 95 EVC |

Siting - EV MV Weekender Alexandria VA Memorial Day Weekend
William M. Schlossman
Spotted at Clyde's Resturant; Alexandria VA Sunday Night Memorial Day
Weekend. Interior loaded with furniture that looked like the results of a successful antique shopping trip. White Exterior, 1993? It was nice to show my kids, as we are still waiting for our 2000 MV Weekender to be delivered. From Northern New Jersey to/from Fredicksburg VA we did not spot any other EV's on the road with the exception of the one mentioned above. We did see 2 older Vanagons, one a Westy. - Bill Schlossman |

Re: clutch and transmission advice
Thanks for that info Mike. Before I received this message I said to the
service rep, that I thought they should do something because I have had the 25 point inspection done everytime I came in. I felt that if all this trouble was caused by the leak that they are somewhat responsible because they were supossed to look at this every time. He checked his service record and let me know that he confirmed this and would do something on this. I won't know what he is proposing until tomorrow but he told me that they found the leak, near a vw emblem somewhere. The drip has been going down into the foam on some pad underneath the van so we would have never seen the leak on the driveway. Seems like they should have noticed the actual leak spot during at least one of these "inspections". Does anyone out there have the contact info on the VW Consumer Relations Office? Sue |

Fair enough. A lazy dealer service department will say "No code, no problem," which isn't quite fair if the problem has happened more than occasionally. On my 97, the cough eventually gets more frequent so a code has eventually gotten logged, although now that mine is in for the 4th time for this problem, the dealer is taking my word for it, even though it didn't turn the light on after multiple coughs over the weekend. I'm not advocating speeding or reckless driving, but if you mash the accelerator right after you feel the cough, you might get it to cough again right away, which should log the code and turn the light on. It's worked for me. As for clicking, I hear it too, and have heard from this list that it could be the normal sounds of the fuel injection system, even if you can't always hear it. I haven't noticed mine changing or getting worse, so I tolerate it or turn up the stereo. As for the door rattle, I suggest you take it up with the dealer's service manager, and if you don't get satisfaction, make noise with VWoA. It doesn't always work, but some days they are more sympathetic than others. You spent a lot of money on your EV, part of which is attributable to warranty coverage, and you deserve to have it repaired. If they refuse and the rattle is really annoying, consider asking a good custom car audio shop about it. Even though you'd probably have to pay for it, these guys usually have some good vibration dampening products and techniques for reducing interior noise from body cavities and panels. Re: MV Weekender Roof
Andrew:
When we have skis on the roof of our 95, I find it difficult to left the roof by myself. Also, the roof won't stay up without some additional support. We cut two old ski poles to length, put rubber plugs on the end. They stow along the sides of the roof when not in use and then I can use them to lift without lifting over my head, popping them into place on the metal frame. I have been accused of an "unprofessional look" by someone on this list, but to be honest, they are up in the corners and don't bother me. |

Re: clutch and transmission advice
That brings me to another question. Every 3000 miles I bring the van in to
the dealer to have the oil changed. As part of this service they are supossed to check a whole list of things. Included on this list, is check for oil and transmission leaks. Every time this has been checked off as "passed" Is this something that should have been caught? We haven't noticed any leaking or difficulty shifting or popping out of gear, etc. Is this all bad luck or do they have some sort of responsibility too? Sue |

clutch and transmission advice
Hi,
After having our van towed in to the dealer, diagnostics showed that it needed a new clutch. Today, upon, getting ready to install, the mechanic found that the transmission fluid was really low and had a burned smell. They tell me there is a possibility transmission problem due to being run so low on fluid. they tell me my options are: take out the transmission, put in the new clutch and fill up the fluid and hope for the best BUT, say this is risky because the transmission may need repair so I might have to have it removed again later (8 hrs labor) As an alternative, I can have them do $200 worth of taking apart the trans while its out, check it out and wait for them to tell me how much more I owe them. As a second alternative, I can just have them put in a rebuild transmission - my mind was numb to the dollar amounts by this time. They told me that manual transmissions are pretty durable so it could be okay, but that there is no way to tell without taking it apart. Any experience with this? Any ideas or advice? Sue PS My only advice to anyone buying a van is to buy the extended warrenty. These are sure not toyotas! |

Sliding door noise (was report on 2000 cough)
Tim Kirwan
开云体育What's your sliding door sound like? Our '99 EV MV slider 'creaks' like a large boat up against a pier. It does it mostly when turning corners of any kind, as well as when going over some bumps. So far our resolution has been to turn up the radio volume. The dealers just say, "Those noises are hard to fix". Tim -----Original Message-----

camping sites, because things get pretty crowded in the summer here. I am born and raised in Tacoma, Washington, so we have explored every part of Washington. My favorite places? Sun Lakes (45 miles south of Grand Coulee Dam), Banks Lake (20 miles south of Grand Coulee Dam), Mt. Rainier? White River Campground is a good place, although it is tenatively going to be closed in the next two years because the Parks dept figures it is in the direct path should any volcanic activity take place (pyrochrastic sp? flows, etc). It is always pretty full because a lot of climbing parties start from there. Boy, Mt. Rainier is a toughie, especially with a dog - and there isn't much right outside of the park. The Mt. Adams area has some good ones Olympic Peninsula: DEFINATELY hit Dungeness Spit County Park (or is it Sequim county park?) It is tremendous - just outside of Sequim (which is 20 miles east of Port Angeles). Another great place on the Olympic Penninsula is Ozette Lake. I would recommend taking the MV Coho ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria instead of the ferries from Anacortes, or Tsawwassen. Don't hesitate to contac tme for more. Re: Coolant flush
You couldn't find a plug because there isn't one. The technique is "loosen the clamp on a lower radiator hose, and pull the hose off and get the hell out of the way". You'll also need to remove the thermostat to let the engine coolant out. When refilling, note the strange hose at the top with a screw fitting. This is a bleeder that lets air out of the system so it can completely fill with fluid. So you unscrew it a little as you fill it and run the engine-make sure you tighten it back down (by hand-it is delicate) when coolant starts to drip out. Another possiblity is to install one of those Prestone in line flush things that lets you run hose water in until it comes clean. You put a pipe deal into the reservoir and water comes shooting out. I'm not sure how well this would work on the odd Eurovan system. Make sure you use the blue-green "older style" VW fluid and not the latest pinkish stuff. Bad things will happen if you mix them.

I'm a new 93 EV GL owner. I want to flush the coolant out of my vanHello, Apparently, the VW does not have a plug. What they the dealer did to mine is they stuck a device down the dip stick hole and sucked it out. They also replaced the filter. I'll tell ya what. I had a few funny sounds from the trans that disappeard after the process. It is really important to keep that fluid changed. VW charged 250.00. A little steep. I think a lube place does it for 95.00. Good luck. Rich |
