Re: Timing Belt

Michael G. McCarthy

The tensioner pulley is called a roller, number 044-145-278-A (list $70)
The serpentine for an EV with A/C is number 074-260-849-J (list $54.95).

water pump: 023 121 004 (alternative 074 121 004)
Timing belt: 046 109 119E (alternative 074 109 119F)
You have to get the timing belt correct to the tooth. The computer cannot
compensate for the physical relationship between the crank and the cam.

I have a '93 EV with about 85K miles on it, and I am now sufficiently
worried by all the posts concerning timing belts to change mine. Wisdom
seems to suggest replacing the water pump at the same time; maybe a new
tensioner pulley should be installed as well.

Can anyone supply the list of parts necessary for this job, together with
part numbers?

I had just bought a 93 EV GL about a month and a half
ago, and i was wondering if the whistling sound you
guys are talking about is the same thing my EV has. It
only makes the sound--kinda like a muffled, whining
puppy--when I shut the engine off.
The belt or tensioner pulley only make the sound when the engine is running.
The only possibility I can think of is the electric water pump which
circulates the cooling fluid after you shut off the engine. It is an
electric pump located on the bottom radiator house. If you take the belly
pan off you can see it. Check if that is where the noise is coming from.

Tim,

If you are hearing noise, you will probably be able to detect the wear by
feeling the tire. Check the tires, particularly the tread on the rear tires
nearest the centerline of the car. It should be smooth, but you may have
cupping due to improper alignment.

You can proably suspect why I know this.

WA State park review.

Chris Noeske

Two weekends ago we went to Lake Easton State park just off of I90.? The
park was nice.? We got the last site that they had.? There are nice trails,
at the park.? Not very long though ( about 2 mi).? Lake Easton is 1 mi from
the park and has a boat launch.? The park was clean, and on a 1 -10 scale I
would rate it a 7.5.
?
This last 3 day weekend we went to Fort Ebie State park on Whidbey Island,
via the Mukileto Ferry.? The park was 100% full.? The sites are very nice.?
There is only one bathroom, which means hot water can be scarce.? From most
every site there is a trail head which leads to numerous trails.? The trails
are good for hiking and there were also mountain bikes on them.? Some of the
trails go along 150 ft cliffs, which can be dangerous for speeding mountain
bikers.? The views were spectacular!? There are trails down to the beach,
but these were too steep for safely carrying a baby in a pack.? On a 1 -10
scale I would rate it a 10.
?
This weekend we are going to a church retreat campground, and Warm beach.?
?
Wednesday I will be leaving for Chester England for 3 weeks, at which time I
will? temporarily unsubscribe from this list.?
?
When I get back we are headed off to Lake Chelan State park, Which I rate at
8.5.
The weekend after that Baker Lake State park, has anyone been there?? What's
it like?

Although it would seem reasonable to assume that the alignments are
good when we get our vehicles new, that might not be a safe
assumption.

When I replaced my tires in November, I had a 4-wheel alignment done
then and the shop found the front was considerably out of specs on
both sides, by similar amounts. I asked whether it was possible that
VW had not readjusted the alignment after Winnebago added all the
(unbalanced) weight of the camper conversion. The shop said it was
possible, given the similar amounts by which each side was out of
alignment. My suspicion is that this condition might have been
common and contributed to the faster wear on the Goodyear Cargo
Vector tires that many have experienced and complained about. Mine
started going bad at 20k miles and were square by 25k, despite
rotations every 5k.

Getting an alignment or balance now won't even out or slow down your
tire wear, but it can't hurt.

All of my tires had a tread pattern which looked like a saw blade when
viewed from the side.
The cause was worn out shocks, although you couldn't tell from the way the
van handled.

I recently purchased a Sidewinder Awning and Tent from my local

Does anyone know what the spring-loaded tent poles and the two small

front flap, I found two additional small flaps, Does anyone know what
these
are for?

Thanks,

Hall Sender

chester1

My fellow EV nuts, Add the Hall Sender to the shut down list or items to
carry on that long wilderness trip. My 93 EV has 147k but has never shut me
down until now. Running down the highway at 85 (Texas) the "damn van" just
quit. Loving understanding wife picked me up in her Acura (always runs) and
drove to tow truck. Tow truck to EV and home. Fuel preasure ok (leak not
fixed, this is how I tell if I have gas - gauge does not work so depend on
smell of gas). No spark, ok new roter and cap. No spark - oh know its the
"brain". I had have them go on my 82 Westie and on our Sidekick. Coil?
Nope, pulled it out and put in son's Corrado - started up. Corrado Bentley
had testing procedure for Hall Sender (fancy points) and it failed the test.
Now the gamble. Ever heard "no refund / exchange on electrical parts"? So
do I tow the "damn van" to dealer or take the chance?? Took the chance.
Hall Sender was 182.00 w/tax. Few minutes later I was back on the road.

Re: Dying Eurovan Theory

My prime suspect would be the water pump. Had a friend's 93 go out around
80,000. Made an increasingly horrible grinding noise. We confirmed it by
pulling the belly pan off the vehicle, and sticking an automotive stethoscope
on the bottom of the engine behind where the water pump mounts (you have to
be in the middle of the car in the front, sticking the probe on the "back" of
the right side of the engine. If it's really dying, you might also find some
dripping coolant in that area. If the water pump seized-it would be dramatic.
Would probably shred the timing belt and cause lots of awful noise. I've
heard that the 93 engine is not a interference type (where the valves will
crash into the pistons if the timing gets messed up), BUT I've also heard
that is only true when the engine is off. At high speed with full pressure on
the hydraulic lifters, I've heard that it can interfere and nuke your
cylinder head. Anyone know the story on that?

I definitely recommend doing some probing before taking it apart. But at
90000 miles, if you haven't replaced timing belt and water pump, you are
definitely due for that anyway. I replaced both belts and pump at 90,000 as
preventative maintenance, even though problems had not started.

Good luck!
