There was a letter from VW of America in the binder for the owners
manual. My van is a 2001 EVC purchased 8/01.

- Are those winter tires 205/60 or 205/65? (205/60 would be
significantly smaller in diameter, 205/65 would be almost the same as
the 225/60)

The tires in the special deal are as indicated: 205/60.

- I'm using the Hakkepaletta WR's which are 99/100H and they haev
great traction, but I've only had them for a couple weeks.

WRs wouldn't work for me; I need studs.

- Regarding the gross weight, remember the thing is nose heavy so
the load isn't the same on all 4 wheels, particularly when stopping.
I've been trying to find out what the weight distribution of an empty
EV is. Assuming it's 60/40 empty and scaling the load ratings for
the 99H relative to the 102H I come up with something like a 200 lb
reduction in payload. Annoying but not enough to affect most people
most of the time.

- Others have suggested that there may be a Nokian Commercial
('C2'?) grade tire that would meet the load rating, but I haven't
been able to find it.

- I'm still trying to figure out if a 235/xx width tire would work,
(there are a lot of possible tires then) or whether I need to go to a
205/xx or 215/xx tire. But going to a narrower tire bothers me, but
apparently VW thinks that's OK at least for winter(!?)

Subject: [ev_update] Another damn tire question.....sorry!

I know this must have been covered here before but all this tire
talk
is making my brain ache. What I'm really looking for is comment
from
Az, Mike and any other tire gurus in the group, especially anyone
that's had experience with the tire I have in mind.

Background: My 2001 EVC came with the standard Dunlop SP Sport 2000
E
225/60 R16 102H Reinforced tires. I got the winter tire "deal"
which
consisted of Dunlop SP Winter Sport M2 205/60 R16 C 100/98H Radial
M+S tires. I'm going to start using the EVC as a daily driver for
the duration of the winter and I need a more aggressive tread than
the Winter Sports offer. Also, I really need studs for winter
driving here in Alaska.

A fellow Alaska driver and group member has put Nokian Hakkapeliita
1
225/60 R16 98T tires with studs on his EVC and likes them a lot. I
am considering getting the same tires. I know I can't run chains
with this tire but that's not an issue. A speed rating of T gives
me
a max. speed of 118 mph and Az probably won't be driving my van so
that's not a problem. So, my remaining concern is load rating. My
winter driving will typically be less aggressive and at lower
speeds. Plus, the van will be carrying less load (no middle seat,
no
food or camping gear, only one or two passengers) so I think this
should be just fine. BTW - A load rating of 98 gives a capacity of
1653 lb. per tire or 6612 lb. for four which is a little more than
the GVWR of 5997 lb. shown on the Winnebago data plate.

Which bring me to my question: am I missing something here? Also,
if
there are group members that have experience with the Hak 1, I'd
sure
like to hear what you think of this tire. I've run Nokian tires on
a
couple of other vehicles and am very satisfied with them. Also, I
really like the idea of matching the size of the OEM tires.

Thanks for you comments and Merry Christmas to all,

WS in AK

I put a Pioneer FM-modulated 12 disc changer in my 2001 GLS with no
problems. It took about 3 hours. I don't know if your passenger
seat is different in the MVWK, but there was plenty of room for it in
mine. I loosened the back cover on the seat and turned the CD
changer to face backward for easier access, although this is probably
not feasible on the MV. You will need the special European antenna
adapters ($12 each from Circuit City) for the install.

Also, to avoid drilling holes in the floor (and possibly the gas
tank) I used heavy-duty two-sided foam tape to stick the unit down.
Just cut out a hole the carpet, stick it to the metal, and it works
like a charm. Removing the console and fishing the wires is the
hardest part.

Good luck.

I don't know about shipping an EV but I had a car shipped once from MA to CA. That was 20 years ago. It cost about $500 and there is an inspection before they load the car and a sign off after I received it. The car is carried on a semi trailer just like new cars are shipped.
There was a small ding when I received the car, nothing bad. I don't remember the name of the company but "carrier" "car shipping" would find something. If you don't mind the mileage you might find someone at a university (or somwhere) to pay gas and drive the vehicle, the deal being they get where they want to be and you get your EV. Good luck. Ann

Re: ESP and ABS warning lights?

i can't say much about the slip part, but yes, the speed sensor is
definitely a part of it. they came on for me when i had 2 different size
tires, front & back. now the 4 are the same, all is good.
Part 2.....i also had them stay on due to failure of the airbag clock
spring in the steering wheel. went to the dealer new one was a dud, next
one worked like a charm. being an EV and all this took about 11 days. so
they were nice enough to give me a rental with UNLIMITED miles. sweet
deal and there loss. i racked up a ton of miles.

Anyone know about having a vehicle shipped cross-country (NY to UT)?

Thomas Isom <[email protected]>

OK, here's now I can relate this post to Eurovans: I bought a 1993 EV
GL 5-sp. a couple of months ago. We absolutely love the space, and I
really like the vehicle overall, but my wife doesn't like driving it
around town. She gets a sore upper back, shoulders and neck (she is
prone to this anyway, but the EV exacerbates it). She wants a
smaller vehicle with an auto trans for getting around town (we'll
still use the EV for when the whole family goes out). There is a
vehicle in NY I may be able to get, but I live in Utah. Anyone know
about shipping a car? Drive-aways? Anyone interested in driving a
Japanese station wagon from NY to Utah for free (all costs paid)?

Re: cd changer

Joe Romas

I put one in my 96 Passat and it was a long way to run the cable but it
worked fine. Our 93 ev-mv we purchashed a year ago had one already put in
it. It's under the driver's seat and you change the casset through the side
of the seat. It's a panasonic as is the stock radio. A friend just got a usa
spec changer from crutchfield for his 03 jetta with monsoon sound and it's
not quite compatable. Crutchfield was not much help but he went to usa spec
and they are working to resolve a program problem. I would opt for the
panasonic unit, either through vw or crutchfield. The cable only needs to go
a short ways under the carpet. BUT BE CAREFULL when drilling mounting holes,
the gas tank or lines are right under the floor!!!!! I'm a do it myself
person and would not hesitate. Plus my connections to positive and ground
are neater then what was in my van. When I got one for my 99.5 jetta tdi the
dealer was cheaper (a first) but now they've gone up. The hardest part is
removing the radio or "head" unit as it's called. The new ones take some
kind of hooks but the older ones have 4 round holes and they are easy. with
one under the seat it's out of sight and will not interfere with vw's
diagnostic machine like a lot of after market ones will.

Joe

Re: cd changer

B. Nostrand

We've got a 2002 EV weekender and opted NOT to put the changer in but rather an in dash single CD player / receiver. The EV unlike the Passat is not prewired for the changer, so installation is expensive (you have to put it under the passenger seat.) Also, that location makes access difficult and you lose yet another storage space (of which there are way too few) as well. rbury

I listened again more closely, the price as 186,000 Euro's

it has a Porsche 939 motor, 3600litre? It weighs 2520kg

wind resistance. I think they said 273km/hr top speed??
(sorry, my German is really pathetic). Minimalist Porsche

That's about all I can catch.

The only thing that comes to mind is that they both use the wheel
