Re: Headlight relay install and DRLs

I upgraded the wiring harness and installed German code lenses and the lights are certainly brighter, but it’s a mystery to me how to get them to focus on the road ahead. They do a good job getting everything but what is in front of me.?

Re: Headlight relay install and DRLs

Thanks Barry. That's what i was hoping to hear and very encouraging.? I'd also be interested in where you got your relay and headlights.
I've written to Daniel Stern Automotive lighting and he's given me a his thoughts with explanations.

Re: Headlight relay install and DRLs

The headlights on my EVC were so dim that I was scared to drive at night. I purchased the wiring harness kit and the European headlights as you are considering. It included two new relays that are wired to the battery and triggered by headlight switch when the switch is turned on. It had no effect on the Driving lights. The new harness improved the headlights so much that I have not installed the European headlights yet.
Highly recommended.

I thought the harness install was straightforward, actually easy.

Re: What about these Vogue tires?

I recently bought a new set of tires and settled on these:
Kumho? Crugen HT51
in 235x60x 16.? ?104T?
They fit fine and have the load rating, which I feel IS important.? ?

I am a fan of Discount Tire/Americas' Tire.? ?They really try to treat you right and have!?
I ordered them online to be installed at a San Diego shop.? Took 3 days to get them.?

What about these Vogue tires?

These VOGUE tires are available at my local tire shop.
Anyone?know anything?about them?
They are 102H not 104H. Is that high enough rating for my 2001 Camper?

Any other suggestions for San Diego?

Thanks!

Re: New code - rough running misfire P1238

Well,
?
I finally took the time to look into the injector situation.? I pulled the intake manifold and separated the upper and lower potions to reveal the injectors.? One injector connector broke off while looking at it too long (#1), and then there are two dead injectors.? (#2 which I suspected, and then also #5, which I did not realize).? So 3 are for sure no good.? I had one good spare, so I sent the remaining good ones I had (total of 4) off to be cleaned, tested, checked, etc.? I am waiting on the verdict from that exercise to see how many I need to actually replace.
?
Ron from Bus Depot reached out somewhere, (here or on the samba?) mentioning that they carry aftermarket injectors that they have not had any problems with.? Man, I am leaning towards going this route.? The stock IWP022 are in excess of $100 each brand new.? I wonder is it better to have 6 aftermaket new injectors or 3 or 4 stock 200K + mile injectors and 2 or 3 zero mile stock injectors?? Or I could run with the good ones I have, and replace the bad ones with aftermarket.? I just am not in a great spot to drop $700 on a new set of stockers, and trying to get a good feeling about the options.
?
Sorry for my rambling.
?
Does anyone have a any feel for aftermarket injector quality?
?
Thanks.

Hi Carl,

Thanks for your thoughts. I wish I had the time & enthusiasm to keep it. There’s still nothing out there that compares.
When I say “haul”, I mean towing. I wouldn’t feel comfortable towing a 5000 lb horse trailer with the Eurovan.
As for the transmission, it’s not something I would do myself, and there’s only two shops my mechanic recommends on the west coast, both of which are in that price range.
One is conveniently in Oakland, where I live, but the other, apparently better referral, is German Transaxle, which is in Bend, Oregon. So, getting the van there is already complicated.
Either way, doing major transmission work for a second time is just not in the cards for us.

Best,
?Brian?

Re: Selling 2003 Eurovan MV Weekender - project

Weight - Good lord, my Weekender is my own personal TARDIS! She's carried a ton of stuff!

Transmission - that figure is easily double what a rebuild should cost, especially if it's only slipping!

Hi wonderful group,

It’s time to part ways with our Eurovan. Firstly, we started needing something that can haul more weight. Secondly, it has a transmission issue that will require a teardown/rebuild, according to our trustworthy mechanic. We noticed the issue because it started slipping when it’s cold.

At $8000-9000, we can’t justify doing the transmission repair just to sell it, so we are ready to hear offers. Find some details below, I can give more if you are interested.

Forest Green
257,200 miles
It has the Westfalia pop-top, the rear bench bed, and pop-up table.

The good mechanical:
-New engine installed at 100,000 miles, so about 157,000 miles on this engine
-In 2021, at 222,450 miles, replaced timing chain, water pump, radiator, engine & transmission mounts, transmission service, and deep-cleaned AC supply vents.
-New brakes

The bad mechanical:
-Needs transmission work urgently, probably a rebuild. ?Gear slips when accelerating, worse when cold.
-Slight ping in engine that none of our mechanics has ever been concerned enough to dig into.
-Windshield was poorly replaced at some point, so some leakage into the cabin on the passenger side. ?Some rust outside.

Exterior and Interior
-Hood was recently painted. ?Body has some dents and dings, and shows signs of age on the plastic bumpers.
-Some plastic is chipped inside on one of the rear jump seats.
-Some scrapes on the plastic on the front of the rear bench/bed.
-Pop-top fabric torn at the back, repaired with tape
-In general, it shows the wear and tear of being a 21-year-old vehicle

If anyone is in need of a project Eurovan for the engine or other parts, drop us a line.
We’re in the East Bay Area, in Northern California.
Here’s the Craigslist post.

I’ve been a rare poster, but a long-time reader on the forum. ?Thanks for the interesting insights over the years.

Re: 1997 VW Eurovan Fuel Line

I might be inclined to just replace the rubber hose part. Cut the metal fuel line ( carefully- no gas or vapors around) and use double hose clamps to clamp the new rubber line to the metal line. The pressure is 40 60 PSI- but if the hose clamp around the fuel filter doesn't leak, a double clamp around the fuel line shojuld work too.

Yesterday I explained that the fuel line, just past the fuel filter, on my 1997 VW Eurovan, Full Camper had
begun to seep and leak.?
It appears the fuel line from that point to the engine fuel rail is a unit. Replacing the entire line looks difficult
as it's enclosed in a woven sleeve with another line, cable?
I didn't include a photograph.
I've provided a picture as an attached file.
