Re: cd changer

Joe Romas

I put one in my 96 Passat and it was a long way to run the cable but it
worked fine. Our 93 ev-mv we purchashed a year ago had one already put in
it. It's under the driver's seat and you change the casset through the side
of the seat. It's a panasonic as is the stock radio. A friend just got a usa
spec changer from crutchfield for his 03 jetta with monsoon sound and it's
not quite compatable. Crutchfield was not much help but he went to usa spec
and they are working to resolve a program problem. I would opt for the
panasonic unit, either through vw or crutchfield. The cable only needs to go
a short ways under the carpet. BUT BE CAREFULL when drilling mounting holes,
the gas tank or lines are right under the floor!!!!! I'm a do it myself
person and would not hesitate. Plus my connections to positive and ground
are neater then what was in my van. When I got one for my 99.5 jetta tdi the
dealer was cheaper (a first) but now they've gone up. The hardest part is
removing the radio or "head" unit as it's called. The new ones take some
kind of hooks but the older ones have 4 round holes and they are easy. with
one under the seat it's out of sight and will not interfere with vw's
diagnostic machine like a lot of after market ones will.

Joe

looking at the Crutchfield catalog and would like to know the degree

Re: cd changer

We've got a 2002 EV weekender and opted NOT to put the changer in but rather an in dash single CD player / receiver. The EV unlike the Passat is not prewired for the changer, so installation is expensive (you have to put it under the passenger seat.) Also, that location makes access difficult and you lose yet another storage space (of which there are way too few) as well. rbury

No, that happens to me all the time on wet roads with those big performance
tires, especially if you are going up hill and turning at the same time, the
tires slip a little...

Last night while driving home from Blockbuster my 2002 EV ESP and ABS
warning lights both came on. After turning off and restarting the van, the
lights stayed off. What could have caused these lights to come on like
that? They came on when I was turning right at an intersection with
moderately wet roads. Should I be concerned about a bigger problem?

Okay... I stand corrected. For the price of the Porsche T4 ($186,000
Euros)... I'll take a new 2003 EV Weekender with heated seats and quit

I listened again more closely, the price as 186,000 Euro's
and 25 people will get one next year. 522 hp, and 675nm torque.
it has a Porsche 939 motor, 3600litre? It weighs 2520kg
and will do 0-100km in 5.1 seconds. It's biggest enemy is
wind resistance. I think they said 273km/hr top speed??
(sorry, my German is really pathetic). Minimalist Porsche
instrumentation, Recaro steering wheel and seats? DVD player.

That's about all I can catch.

You might be able to get some "History" codes out of the controllers
if you take it to the dealer?

The only thing that comes to mind is that they both use the wheel
speed sensors?

Someone purchased my 93 EV about a year ago and had it shipped to SF area.
The procedure was a rather large car carrier (truck) stopped near (two blocks
away) my home near Annapolis, MD, I drove my EV there, he loaded it onto the
car carrier and within a couple of weeks, the EV was delivered to the new
owner. I do not know the cost but the carrier gets offers from the Internet
and when he has a profitable load, he is on his way. My Bill of Lading shows
the carrier to be WCS Express Inc., 1902 Galetown Dr., Severn, MD 21144 Phone

I'm far from a tire guru, but I have been learning a lot here
lately! For winter traction, I can't help you much. I did notice
that the Hakkapellita tires seem to be favorites of some of my
friends in Sweden, so that says something.

As load ratings go, this is pretty new to me. Motorcycle tires
aren't load rated... at least not in the US. Ok, it's a long story
and it really isn't applicable. But one thing I've learned about
load rating from tire engineers here lately is that the load rating
is based on several things... but the really interesting factor is
the speed rating! According to two tire engineers I've spoken with,
many high speed tires are safe above thier load ratings, as long as
speed is kept down! What this means for us EV folks is that we're
fighting a losing battle because VW specifies a tire that has a high
speed rating *and* a high load rating. We really don't need that
high a speed rating, and tires with a very high speed rating but a
relatively low load rating may actually be fine *at lower speeds*.

I'm still looking into this, but I'm running 98 rated tires on my
van right now, and I've hit many potholes, gotten airborne over
railroad tracks, and even managed a few 4 wheel drifts, (although
it's pretty hard to drift these things with the ESP on... even in
the rain) and the tires are holding up fine. Remember to check your
tire pressure frequently!

Now if you're not into taking chances, think I'm out of my mind, or
simply like doing what you're told, please stick to the OEM specs.
You really can't go wrong if you do.

Az

Another damn tire question.....sorry!

I know this must have been covered here before but all this tire talk
is making my brain ache. What I'm really looking for is comment from
Az, Mike and any other tire gurus in the group, especially anyone
that's had experience with the tire I have in mind.

Background: My 2001 EVC came with the standard Dunlop SP Sport 2000 E
225/60 R16 102H Reinforced tires. I got the winter tire "deal" which
consisted of Dunlop SP Winter Sport M2 205/60 R16 C 100/98H Radial
M+S tires. I'm going to start using the EVC as a daily driver for
the duration of the winter and I need a more aggressive tread than
the Winter Sports offer. Also, I really need studs for winter
driving here in Alaska.

A fellow Alaska driver and group member has put Nokian Hakkapeliita 1
225/60 R16 98T tires with studs on his EVC and likes them a lot. I
am considering getting the same tires. I know I can't run chains
with this tire but that's not an issue. A speed rating of T gives me
a max. speed of 118 mph and Az probably won't be driving my van so
that's not a problem. So, my remaining concern is load rating. My
winter driving will typically be less aggressive and at lower
speeds. Plus, the van will be carrying less load (no middle seat, no
food or camping gear, only one or two passengers) so I think this
should be just fine. BTW - A load rating of 98 gives a capacity of
1653 lb. per tire or 6612 lb. for four which is a little more than
the GVWR of 5997 lb. shown on the Winnebago data plate.

Which bring me to my question: am I missing something here? Also, if
there are group members that have experience with the Hak 1, I'd sure
like to hear what you think of this tire. I've run Nokian tires on a
couple of other vehicles and am very satisfied with them. Also, I
really like the idea of matching the size of the OEM tires.

Thanks for you comments and Merry Christmas to all,

WS in AK

for the newbies (I had posted this several years ago)

I put on Sears Michelin XCX size 215 R75 15 on the car

Many things accrued

1) increased ground clearance - I can now remove belly pan, and
change oil and filter WITHOUT using jack stands

2) gas mileage increased about 4% - will pay for the tires eventually

3) ride is much better since they run at 35 PSI instead of the 55 psi
of t he old cement donuts that came iwth the car

4) load rating is greater than previous tiers

5) they are quieter

6) so far have logged 40K and wear is less than 1/2

7) for you guys with the 16" wheels - i dont know if they come in
theat size but i think they do

8) and no I have never hit the fender well, or the horn even lock to
lock

9) the ONLY drawback is that you cant put chains on the back anymore
however since I pass people going up hill in the snow who are
slipping all over the place this doesnt seem to be a problem for me.

The front end can be adjusted with a nut on the torsion bar. There are two
torsion bars, one on each side. Adjusting to specifications is supposed to
be the first step in an alignment. Check archives under "Alignment."

If you are looking to increase ground clearance, the easiest choice is to
increase tire size.

Not all VW and Audi are the same. Many Audi are 17mm, not 19mm and that
means a different size ball too. The ball must match the socket, especially
on alloys. The length must be correct too. Don't assume, measure.

Steve, the lug nuts are the same for the '01 - steel wheels and alloys.
i also used the same when i went 18's from a Saab. if they fit they'll
be fine. VW / Audi should be the same, and yes, both 19mm and 5 x 112mm
bolt pattern. no need for bolts unless you get an aftermarket brand like
