Re: 1993 Eurovan Fuel Leak UPDATE
For what it's worth, I have a 97 EVC and I also smell gas fumes after I turn the engine off. Maybe the 97 and 99 owners should also comment. stevek 97 EVC columbia md

Re: Eurovan Toilet Options
Osco sells hospital urinals for men and women. Takes up less space than the port-a-pottie, which is stored behind the back seat, between the coach battery and the heater air intake. Re: Eurovan Toilet Options
You can also get little portable urinals (with adapters for women) from the Campmore catalog. I've seen them in pilots catalogs too. Also, they have a portable toilet with a disposable plastic bag system. You can fold it flat and store behind the drivers seat when not in use. These are great options if you only plan to use them when you can't find another option. You can add dry bleach to the bag in the portapotty system if you want extra odor control.

Re: 93 EV Fuel Line Problem Survey
Here is the VW engine fire web site for the center for auto safety. There is a survey for engine fires link. If you have had a fire fill out the survey.

I'm going to ask them to inform VW >> of the problem, and I am going to >> notify the NHTSA to see if a recall >> should be issued. This is obviously >> a safety defect, and VW should pay for it.
I would hope that anyone who has experienced this problem would report it to the NHTSA immediately, as well as to VWOA.
It would also be a good idea, when reporting this design defect to the NHTSA, to also add the fact that even a handful of similar reports represents a noticeable percentage of vehicles involved due to the relatively small quantity of EV's imported into this country.
Very good points made by several of you, I agree completely. I encourage you to get in VW's face, but I must also say, I hope you have lots of patience and persistence. Remember, VW is a German company. They are right just about all the time, and that's that. I hope you can get VW to do something, which is only right in this situation. Wade

No kidding! Based on the sheer number of list members who are reporting failure of the gas lines and connectors in their '93 EVC's, is should be obvious that a SERIOUS design defect exists, which could easily result in a serious engine fire, accident and personal injury or death. I would hope that anyone who has experienced this problem would report it to the NHTSA immediately, as well as to VWOA.
Unless the design of the fuel lines and connectors was changed in later models, which is probably not likely, all of us can expect to experience this serious problem in coming years. A safety recall would definitely be in order for all EV's with this obvious safety defect.

These are exactly the places my friend Mario showed me yesterday where the EV5s he rebuilt had fires. They were 92s. He has seen 5 in all that were burnt in the same area in just one city, Edmonton Alberta. Some were Westphalia campers,(the ones he rebuilt) and the others were EV buses. He says the problem is the mickey mouse clamps that VW uses to attach the lines. I have to agree. The lack of decent clamps, the heat from a congested engine compartment the high number of fuel carrying lines with the 2.5 engine make it likely as any place for a fire to start. Mario told me if you ever smell fuel and you haven't just refueled, look under the hood. It is probably coming from the area you have identified. I have already decided to replace most of these lines next spring before using the camper. I will change the clamps at that time. The only reason for waiting is to see if you guys are successful in promoting a recall. Certainly VW of America isn't going to act unless one of you decides to sue. Class action lawsuits are forbidden by law in the province we live in. Burned out Eurovans are impressive to look at in junk yards. Reg

Can someone give me a good source for discount parts prices for my
'93 EV GL? CamelBack VW 800-876-5199
Make sure you tell them you are calling from out of state. they are a dealer, and generally about -30% from our local dealer
I get my parts from busdeopt.com. On a cold start valve I saved almost $50 over dealer price. eckhard

Funny thing happened while camping this weekend. . . We have had no problems with our fuel lines until this morning. We were camping at about 10,000 feet and it got really cold last night. When we packed up the van and started it to head out, we could smell raw gas. As a well informed EV-Update subscriber, I had a pretty good idea of what was going on. I opened the hood, and low and behold, gas spraying all over the distributor from the fuel line crimp! I turned off the engine, soaked up the gas and then wrapped the lines very tightly in electrical tape until I can get it to the dealership this week. I'm going to ask them to inform VW of the problem, and I am going to notify the NHTSA to see if a recall should be issued. This is obviously a safety defect, and VW should pay for it.
I hadn't paid attention to how many people had this problem in the past, so I don't know how many others have had this problem; just that it exists. Has anyone kept count or know who else on the list this has affected? I'd like to know so I could let the NHTSA know I am not alone. I think if we had substantial proof of the number of incidents, we would have a better chance of getting VW to recall the vans before someone is injured, or worse yet, killed. My family survived one fire in my EV; two would be way too many. I now have TWO fire extinguishers on board.

Re: EVC-5 Cruise Control Transplant Report
So you have an early model Eurovan and you don't have cruise!!!!
1. VW doesn't sell a kit to add cruise. 2. VW dealers don't know what they are talking about when it comes to adding cruise. 3. VW parts guys don't know what is in their own product. Don't forget here guys that I installed a $69 cruise (from J.C. Whitney...brand name = Audiovox) in my '93 GL. Took me one day and it works perfect. -- Bill Salopek ICQ: 20536257 No worries... Cooling fans: Descriptions needed for the uninformed

There has been a considerable amount of discussion on this list about cooling fans, series resistors, multiple speed motors (not NOT), squeaky blower fans, and potential failure of the A/C system if faulty series resistors are not replaced. As a less than fully informed observer, I am impressed by the group knowledge of EV technical details presented here. However, I am often baffled as to whether the thread is regarding engine cooling fans or interior ventilation fans. It appears to me that the engine has two fans, and the EV6 has two interior circulation fans, one in the dash and one under the floor below the passenger seat for the rear section. Both the engine and interior systems have series resistors/multiple speeds, and both have experienced problems, at least on the EV5 models. What key words should I look for to differentiate these threads, other than "engine cooling" or "in the dash"? I would like to suggest that in the future some key words be used to reduce ambiguity. My bet is that VW won't initiate a recall until there is a death. =Gregg Burgess original article: As many of you know, my EV had an engine fire last weekend. I've
since had a close look at the engine compartment, and it would seem that the majority of damage is in the area where the fuel lines come together just above the distributor.
I went to the NHTSA website and found three defect complaints on the 93 EVs which relate to fuel leaks, one of which caused a fire. If in fact fuel leaks are a common occurance in 93 EVs, I'd like to take VW to task.
My question to the group is, how many of you have had fuel leak problems with your 93 EVs? Have any of you had an engine fire related to a fuel leak? Please let me know.
Thanks.

Re: Eurovan Toilet Options
We also have the Sears model. We normally travel with it behind the rear bench seat and take it out when needed and also at night. Alex Bill,
We have a Sears Pak-A-Potti 6000 portable toilet --- its made for Sears by Thetford. It works perfectly for travel and trips and fits well on the floor just in front of the rear seat next to the sliding side door. We added a set of non-slip pads to the bottom of the unit and use a nylon strap to secure it into place when traveling (one of those backpack style straps with quick snap connectors). Thetford also makes a set of quick-clip connectors to secure the Pak-A-Potti to the floor of the camper. I bought a set of those then decided not to use them after all as they required installing the clips permanently onto the floor. The quick-connect nylon strap serves the same function without having to drill into the floor.
We had a similar portable toilet in our old '78 VW Campmobile, and one in our Apache pop-up camper before that. All worked equally well.
