Fun at the junkyard.

Went to the local wrecking yard yesterday to prey on a burned out 93 EV GL.
I went for the 2" trailer hitch ($20), but couldn't get it off as the rim on
which the van was resting was situated right on one of the bolts.
Unfortunately, the van was scheduled to be crushed today as the only parts
left on it after the fire were the rear bumper and side caps (maroon), rear
hatch and taillights. I'm going to go back tomorrow and if it didn't get
crushed as scheduled I will get the rear hydraulic struts ($5 each). Don't
know if dragging a hoist out there is worth it for the hitch.

I took the driver's side taillight to replace a broken one on mine. Tried to
get to the passenger side one, but the rear A/C unit had melted into the
access area. $10 for the unit which is in perfect shape.

Also got a FUBA roof-mounted antenna off a wrecked Passat. Took out the
factory antenna on my 93 EV and put the new one in its place. Looks slick;
like the Cabrios. It was easy to install, too. It fits right in the drain
hole and has the same profile as the windshield. The old antenna hole now
serves as the drain hole. The FUBA blends in with the van much better than
the metal one. $3. I would have liked to have mounted it on the roof, but
it would not have cleared the garage door. Wired right up with no problems.

Happy EVing

Gotta love the junkyard.

A tip for all you Europhiles out there. Anyone looking for European Side
Blinker lights: The front marker lights on the early Audi 5000s are exactly
the same as the small ones used on most A2 VWs in Europe. Just install a
higher-wattage blinker bulb, remove the emblem from the car, snap in and wire
up. $1 each. And, there are a lot of wrecked Audis out there. . .

Also, had my front brake calipers painted bright red. Looks cool. They now
match the "SCCA" colored tow hooks.

One other thing: The only other completely burned-out car in the foreign
section was a 99 New Beetle. It must have been in a HOT garage fire because
it was burned uniformly and everything but the unibody, engine and doors
melted. There was roof and hood damage from what looked like trusses falling
on the car. The funny thing is the rear of the car is labeled "FRONT." They
do kinda look the same from either direction, don't they. For the twisted
folks like me out there, I took some digital photos of both the EV and the
Beetle and can E-mail them to you if you like.

Re: Eurovan Wiper Blades

The wiper blades are replaceable if they are original equipment. I change
mine out every six months. I've kept the original wiper housings since the
driver's side one has that "aerodynamic swooshy thing" which helps keep the
wiper in contact with the windshield at high speeds. (Like that matters on
an 5-cyl EV which tops out at just over 90 mph. Now, certain VR6 EVCs --
specifically from California -- are known to travel in the triple digits, but
we won't name names. . .)

They were available for the '93 to '95 models at the dealer. I have never
seen one for the '96 on up. I thought I would find these in Germany, but no
one uses these over there.

They either have no bugs, or know something we don't.

Re: VCR/TV stand options for 2000 EV

This reminds me that two nights ago we were in Costco in Salem, Oregon and
picked up a Sansui (I believe) TV/VCR which has a 6" LCD screen and runs on
AC, a rechargeable battery that comes with it and 12 volt. Price was $399.
It will be a great addition for our football tailgating.

'93 EV auto tranny slipping?

I posted the other day that my wife experienced what she called "high rpms"
while driving home from work the other day. I sounded like the transmission
was slipping, but since I haven't experienced this, I'm not sure.

I checked the fluid level and didn't see any fluid register on the dipstick.
I checked the owner's manual that said I needed to drive it a while before
the level would indicate correctly. I only took it around the block a
couple of times and noticed the fluid on the very end of the dipstick. Not
wanting to take any chances, we had it towed back to the shop that had
recently changed the fluid.

They checked the level and said it was fine. They drove it and said there
was no problem. My wife thinks they fixed the problem they caused when they
originally serviced it. Other than just adding fluid, I'm not sure what else
they could of done.

If the shop didn't put enough fluid in it, do you think this caused any
damage?

If they won't admit it now, I don't think there is much I can do about it.

I'm going to check the level again under the same circumstances to see if it
still reads the same.

Used my '93 EV MV to tow VW Things, and any Uhaul trailer that didn't need

Never tried to tow the heavier trailers with brakes though.

of trolling by sending baiting comments just to provoke more comments.

Your earlier posts seemed to follow this pattern especially when you
mentioned that you don't own a van but didn't explain why (until
later.)

Admittedly, the reference to the PhD guy might've been out of line, but
it did appear that your posts were heading that direction. Unlike the
PhD guy, who was just plain stupid (remember his insistance about the
existance of airbags?), you seem to know about cars and such.

Now that I know why you're not a VW owner, I can certainly understand.
I've had bad experiences with dealers, but nothing like what you
describe. It's peculiar that both VW and their dealer were so
disdainful of your situation. Does that dealer still have the
franchise? Seems that VW was getting bounced from one outlet to another
around here for a while.

Have you pursued this legally? Maybe a well written letter from an
attorney after a week or two might've sparked some action on the
missing part.

After the part snafu (situation normal, all f***ed up), and the air con
problem, I certainly would've taken them to small claims court or
whatever venue would've been appropriate.

Out of curiosity, have you been in touch with your state's AG office or
whoever enforces lemon laws? While it might be too late for your EV MV,
I've heard of a few situations where cars had to be bought back because
of problems like yours (out of service for so long.)

Good luck with your future purchases.

storage by removing upper bed - MV WK / EVC

yegs

Bill, when I wrote about flipping the bed board for additional and more
accessible upper storage when parked I was referring to the Westy
version, weekender. That board is held in with dove tail clips. No
tools needed. The Winne's are different an am sure modifications could
be made.

Does removing the bed mean detaching the forward (folding portions)
of the
board by removing the hinge and leaving the rear (stationary) board
in place?
I am assuming that the area underneath the stationary board, if
easily
accessible, is not suitable for storing linens.

When you leave the upper bed in place as designed in transit, do you
feel
that the bed acts as a sound deadener and thermal insulator between
the roof
and the EVC interior?

Since we use the upper bed so little and seeing Gerry Edge's approach of
just taking everything out of the roof and using the hollow space for
storage, I can say that removing the bedboards did not silence the van any
at all because we had plenty of those rubber "dots" in the first place. I
may return the one mattress to the roof because it keeps clothes pressed
nicely for dressy occasions.

On my 95, the additional vent was mounted below the original vent on the
flat surface. It is well out of the way of the seam, there is no sealing
problem and the fridge now works at high altitudes.

I think you are right about this. In the case of my manual shifter problem,
while I think the mechanic was intending to be very thorough by ordering all the
associated parts so that they could all be replaced efficiently at one time, I
am not convinced I actually needed all of them. So I was the one who got
shifted, I mean, shafted.

Allot of the dealers, that don't care. The first dealer that I found who
cared was in Canada, now
I buy just about everything through him.
Some of us might want to know who this dealer is, and the number, address, etc.

Wade Punch

Sicvw@... wrote:

I appreciate your input but to think that a company like Toyota appreciates

You have a point. I am in the midst now of trying to convince the Toyota dealer
to replace a carburetor that is only 9 months old and under warranty. But the
dealer (who did not install it) is telling me there is nothing wrong with it, and
I know better. The problem is, the problem comes and goes, and they are not
willing to drive it enough to see the real problem in action.

Moreover saying that you
"perfer a reliable and cost efficient car" implies that the rest of us dont.
Maybe what I was implying was, some of the rest of you are more patient than I to
deal with some of the idiosynchrosies of the EV's. Sure, we all want reliable
cars, but some of us may be more tolerant. As for cost efficiency, if money were
no object and I had an overabundant supply, I would not care about the cost. But
that is not the case with me.

We all want reliable and cost efficent cars but unfortunately not every
single car or product a company offers will always be rock solid reliable. if
an auto manufacturer offered to fix eveything that went wrong with a car 1
year after the warranty was up anyways, they would lose a ton of money and i
think that if you were the president of the 3rd largest automaker in the
world you might find it difficult to give up that kind of cash.
You are basically right; however, in the EV's case though, if you were a
subscriber to the "original" EV Update newsletter, you would know there has been
a high incidence of A/C failures, and for the most part VW has refused to help
many people, outside the warranty. I maintain this system in particular, was
poorly designed and they should take more responsibility than they have. The
current fuel line situation seems to be a very serious issue, and it appears from
this group's postings, that VW once again is not too concerned. I hope they are.
(They should be)
I would think being the 3rd largest automaker (I thought they were #2, who is
1,2, and 3 now?), you would have a fair amount of cash you could afford to give
up. Maintaining good will seems to be a foreign concept to VW, I think the
Japanese (notably Acura & Lexus) and Saturn would tell you it contributes toward
customers remaining happy and coming back to buy more vehicles.

But i like
the VW "s because i have found them to be reliable and appealing to the eye
and they , to me are very useful and enjoyable cars with a lot of personaliy
and that is something the Japanese automakers definately dont have (
personality) as it seems everything they make is a copy of something else.
Yes, they do have character and the styling is continually improving.
I am still not convinced wholeheartedly about the reliability, though. The dealer
network still has a lot of room to grow.

I
still appreciate all the help and guidance that your experience can give me
because at one time you did own a Vw at one time. chris
Since 1970 I have driven and/or owned numerous VW's. The first was a Karmann
Ghia, then a '69 Camper (non pop-top), then other Ghia's (hardtops &
convertibles), a Thing, a Squareback, a '71 Camper Pop-Top, a '80 Rabbit diesel,
a '82 Jetta, a '84 Vanagon Camper, a '90 Vanagon, and of course, a '93 EV GL. So
you may see, to sell my EV in January was not an easy decision. Economics played
a large part of the decision.
I still own a '83 BMW R100 motorcycle since new, so I still have German blood in
me. I have driven only BMW's since 1970 also.

$70 is exactly what a Chevy dealer charges for a bug guard for a Chevy Astro.
In a German magazine I saw a clear plastic foil that can be applied to the
hood and perhaps the top of the rear bumper (where mine is scratched). I have
thought about "coating" my hood but is so scratched and chipped that any new
chips don't matter. I think J.C. Whitney carries some sort of foil like that.
I also read in a US car magazine (the one that tested the new Mercedes 4x4)
that this stuff can be professionally applied. They had it done to their
Mercedes before they drove it to Alaska.
