Re: Norcold Ignitor Fix #Norcold

Last year I pulled my Norcold out of my 1995 EVC to change out the burner. This link was provided on this list before, this is my write up and pictures of the job which I posted up on TheSamba.com.

Norcold Ignitor Fix #Norcold

The attached document is a complete set of instructions for identifying and repairing the Norcold gas ignitor issue that prevents the propane circuit from working.
This procedure is accomplished with readily available parts that are not too expensive and do not require replacement of the ignitor unit.
Please read through the entire document. It is recommended that you print it before statrting.?
If you find errors or want revisions, please contact me and I will make changes.?

Re: 97 Eurovan running hot

An additional factor is the bypass thermostat.? It will restrict the flow to the cooler somewhat and may cause the tranny to run a bit hotter but take some heat load off the radiator at the same time.? ?Mine has no thermostat so my engine runs a bit hotter and the tranny runs almost too cool.? Never seen the trany break 200 f since adding the cooler.

Hi Ken,?

Not sure if helpful, but I also have a ’97 EVC that currently has about 107,000 miles. I recently installed a trans cooler at 105,000 along with a rebuilt transmission.?

Since installing and monitoring the ScanGauge (at 95,000 miles), I noticed that the engine water temp was typically between 190-210 F. The trans temp would fluctuate well into the 250’s under heavy load, particularly in the stop and go traffic of the city and on long mountain pass climbs. When it failed (no 4th gear), temps spiked to 280 F before I was able to safely pull off and cool down.

Since installing a GoWesty trans cooler, engine water temps have stayed roughly the same, and I’ve logged 230 F on the transmission temps once during a hot summer day in stop and go traffic. Turning on the A/C to force the radiator fans on got the temps back down to nominal range (~200 F) within 10 minutes, despite stop and go traffic.

I am in Los Angeles, and it’s not getting any cooler here.?

interesting point. I put the tranny cooler on as soon as I bought the van so I don't have a comparison to check it with prior to the installation. But a previous one I owned didn't seem to run hot. I'll play around with the tranny cooler and see if that indeed is the issue.

Sorry, I missed this question on Saturday.? The fans I was talking about are the 2 front radiator fans.? I have Climatronic.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for the great advice!

Re: Westfalia pop top

I’m a 70-year-old woman with a 2002 Eurovan pop-top, and have found it makes a big difference if you open the sliding door and/or the back hatch before trying to open or close the pop-top… otherwise, you’re creating an air-pressure difference that works against you.? My pop-top is original, and while it’s bit heavy, I have no problem opening and closing it by myself with no other implements.

Hope this help!

Re: Westfalia pop top

You could approach “ Colorado camper van” for a whole new top. I did that and am very happy with the result.

To bring it down, using the stool it’s an easy pull. Before it’s latched I go out and tuck the fabric using a chopping board, which makes a gentle poke. I have a nice bamboo chopping board that conveniently just fits over the sink for more counter space. Then I get back on the stool, pulldown using the open vent to latch it.

I have a 2001 EuroVan with a Westfalia pop top I don't sleep up there but I like to keep it open when I'm sleeping on the bench bed.
The problem is is it as hard as hell to put up but even harder to pull down and keep the fabric inside when I'm by myself. I'm going to take a really good look at the lifts as it opens and closes unevenly.? I'm 68-year-old woman and it's getting to be a bit difficult. I have hear mixed reviews about the hydraulic ones. Any hints or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Westfalia pop top

Hi Janet,

I heard some people change the struts for easier one and it fixes everything but I haven't tested myself.?
Currently, when I'm closing the roof I put a 10-ish cm object (has to be solid!) to prevent it from closing completely, then I go out of the van and fix any pending fabric. After that I just remove the object I used and let the roof close.?
Maybe it helps.

Opening and closing unevenly can be a sign of worn roof struts. I have a 1999 full camper so not sure about Weekender roofs but I assume they are much the same.
I am in the same situation as you, was finding it a bit difficult to open/close.
You could try adding a paracord line to the center handle and put a plastic ring at the bottom so it is about 4 inches off the floor when closed. Put your foot in this to help pull the pop top down when closing it.
Use a two inch by quarter inch lath, well rounded at the business end, to help tuck the roof canvas back in after closing.

If compressor is not running, ? What is the pressure ?
Check switch on top tank on fire wall pass side, pull plug and check, there should be voltage on one side and other side to compressor clutch.

What is that switch called that controls the AC fan function?? ?I would look there first, test that if fan is not coming on.

The pressure is fine, I checked it.

The AC system had a high side and low side pressure, and you generally need to check both.

I'm attaching two PDFs - one is a generic for diagnosing things based on the high and low side pressures, and the other is a flowchart more specific for Sanden compressors (which is what my 2000 uses, not sure about the 2003 year)
