Opening and closing unevenly can be a sign of worn roof struts. I have a 1999 full camper so not sure about Weekender roofs but I assume they are much the same.
I am in the same situation as you, was finding it a bit difficult to open/close.
You could try adding a paracord line to the center handle and put a plastic ring at the bottom so it is about 4 inches off the floor when closed. Put your foot in this to help pull the pop top down when closing it.
Use a two inch by quarter inch lath, well rounded at the business end, to help tuck the roof canvas back in after closing.

I have a 2001 EuroVan with a Westfalia pop top I don't sleep up there but I like to keep it open when I'm sleeping on the bench bed. The problem is is it as hard as hell to put up but even harder to pull down and keep the fabric inside when I'm by myself. I'm going to take a really good look at the lifts as it opens and closes unevenly.? I'm 68-year-old woman and it's getting to be a bit difficult. I have hear mixed reviews about the hydraulic ones. Any hints or advice would be greatly appreciated.
