Re: EV in NC

Eckhard, I have a blue 93 EV MV, and live in Durham, though I was not on Rt
55 yesterday. You may have seen me on Erwin Road between Durham and Chapel
Hill.

I know this must be fascinating to people who live elsewhere.

For the books, we bought our EV from a private party in Durham last July,
after considering alternative like Sportsmobile and other Class B
vehicles....even so far as thinking about a Chevy Astro extended vans. I
pretty much a Toyota/Mazda type buyer, and have been down on VWs since I
had a '63 convertable in the '70s. But I must say I like the size and
space of the EV, and the fact that we can take off for camping trips at the
drop of a hat. My wife really loves the EV. Its her play house on wheels.
Most important, our dog has taken to it, and jumps in anytime the side
door is open.

While I'm on this, I know that I need new mounts for the motor--I've been
following that thread closely. Is it really something I can do? I'm not
very sophisticated mechanically, and though I have made my way through some
complicated procedures (very slowly), the EV engine is a bit intimidating
to look at. I would like a reality check on that. I don't have a garage,
or even much level space in my driveway. If there is much danger in really
messing up the EV, I'd be willing to pay someone to do it, I suppose, as
much as it hurts to say that.

Though this was really in response to Eckhard, anyone who wants to chime in
on the motor mount/EV maintenance issue please do!

Looking for a second EV

Omar Riffi

Hello, group. Looking for a second EV. It has to be a 1993 model year [cost considerations] and it has to have an automatic transmission. I'd prefer it if I am contacted directly, for I only get to read the group postings twice a week at the most [if I am lucky]. Any help would appreciate it very much. Thank you. omarriffi@... Omar.

Re: Console

Justin Scheller

Eckhard,
I bought a center console at Pep Boys. I had to notch the front left corner of
it to fit (it was an inch or so to long) but it does not interfere with the E
break. It has a small catchall in the very front then 2 cup holders for the
driver and passenger, on top it has a lid with another catch all and 2 drink
holders for the people in the center seat. I removed the hinge on the lid so
the top lifts off 2 reasons for this. #1 you would have to remove the things in
the lid compartment to access the thing in the large center compartment and #2
it rubbed on the passenger arm rest when tilted to open it. I'm using this in a
'99 GLS

I told the list last week about the miserable loaner Ch*v
that my FLVW dealer gave us when the appointment to fix our
camper ran over. (That was because they had failed to
source the parts, despite having a week's advance notice on
the work).

So we got the van back on Friday after $1702 (Canadian)
worth of work (say $300 U.S.!) to find that the clown
mechanic must have leaned on our lexan headlight cover.
This guy is so swift that he criss-crossed it with black
electrical tape, apparently thinking that we wouldn't
notice.

I have informed the dealership that I expect a free
replacement.

Re: Sorry, I Win

Zaborenko, Alex, NNAD

Scott,

What kind of long trips could you be going on and still have only 50K miles?

To everyone who has so few miles on their EVs, shame on you for not going on
some real trips and packing the miles on. My wife and I were so excited
when we got our 99 EVC that we put 5K miles on it within the first 6 weeks
and now have over 30K after 16 months with only weekend and travel use.

93 GL auto, 50,800 one-owner miles, 1-2 long trips/year, my wife's
daily driver.

IMO, the benefits of this list far outweigh the occasional irritation
of a "wild hair" thread.

Come on guys, life's too short.

Re: Agilis v. Pirelli Scorpion

Jerry Carter

Bruce,

What is the load rating (on the side of the tire) and max tire pressure
rating (again, on the side of the tire) of the Pirelli Scorpion.

Jerry

"bruce curry" <taiz-@...> wrote:

Sorry to encourage more discussion on the dreaded tire thread but I
just had
occasion to try on a friend's set of Pirelli Scorpions (205/75/15)
which in
theory are quite a bit taller than the vaunted Agilis. His are on a
91
westy synchro. They fit my 93 ev w/out a problem on both front and
back
w/out rubbing the body during turns.

These tires recently rated top of the class in several recent
consumer tests
for both quietness of ride as well as handling in the wet. They have
8
belts, are rated for 40 or 50k miles, and I believe are rated for the
weight
of most EV configurations. They have both an aggressive "truck" as
well as
more sedate "passenger" tread pattern option. As I recall they are a
relative bargain at $69 at discount tire.

For those looking to raise their van, decrease their rpms or get more
mileage might want to check them out.

Yes most definately. Side by side inflated comparison I've done
(re new
tire
spares w/= pressures plus on vehicle comparisons). A significant
eyeball
difference without using any math. One would have to question the
rationality of putting a smaller tire on already a marginally tired
vehicle?
Speedo readings are already inaccurate as to reading fast (would
read even
more inaccurate or faster with shorter tires), EV's have low-torque
engines
(why increase RPM's at highway speeds which would equate to less
MPG?),
increase noise due to engine buzz at speed (increased rpm), plus
lowering
the
ever present limited ground clearance. Figure? My experience?
Been
there
done that with other vehicles. Will pass on any degree of
downsizing
vehicle
tires ... even if they were free. Unless living in mountainous
terrain
or
towing something behind your EVC where shorter tires equate to
higher gear
ratio, look for the larger diameter size tire. The 215/65R15C
Agilis may
prove to be the answer if they can be found. I will run my
Goodyear G64's
until I find an equally large or larger tire (re the Agilis
215/65R15C) to
replace them with. No complaints whatsoever with the G64's other
than a
bit
noisy due to the aggressive tread pattern. Good hunting.... we are
off in
our EVC to Alamos, Sonora Mexico for the Music festival .... =).

Not everyone is a ace mechanic!

Scott Douglas

People just like to feel included and a lot of people do not know a lot
about fixing Euro vans. So when there is a time when they can put their two
cents in and send in a e-mail they take advantage of this a feel a lot
better about participating in the group. So instead of making people feel
stupid about answering "off the wall" emails we should just live with it,
because it is all in fun, and then everybody would feel good about being
part of this group. After all, we listen to people on this list that do not
even own a EV, but just enjoy the groups discussions. If we stop having fun,
then its time to sell the EV.
