Re: Teach your children well.....

Michael G. McCarthy

The "Mideast"...... I suppose if we think of Europe as the center of the
world then we can describe the world in terms of the Mideast, and the Far
East, and the West.

Why not call the region Southwest Asia, like we call our region North
America? Give every region its propers.

I'm not singling you out Serge. I think the presumption that Europe is the
center of the world is shared by many, and I think that's EXACTLY at the
heart of the problem. Imagine the perceive arrogance for our country to
call a couple of tall building on an island off North America the "WORLD
Trade Center." Harrumppphhhh......don't the people of "Southwest Asia" know
a thing or two about "trading?" Don't they have a history of trading that
goes back thousands of years? It's one kind of arrogance to call our
baseball playoffs the "World Series," it's another to place our culture at
the center of the universe.

I'm not sympathetic to the terrorist actions that occurred today. I'm not
even suggesting our culture is just as good or just as bad as any other
culture. Nonsense; our culture is the best in the world. I'm just saying
it's not about oil; it's about differing world views, and I'm trying to get
my own views straight when it comes to thinking about the happenings in
North America, and Southwest Asia.

How about getting the hell out of the mideast? We probably lost today
in less than an hour about the same number of lives we lost in the
ENTIRE Vietnam war!

The ordinary Palestinians, and their children, are dancing in the
streets and smiling through the windshields of THEIR Eurovans! All
this to keep the price of gas for OUR Eurovans below $2/gallon?

This isn't about some small group of political leaders, or crazed
terrorists, that are angry at us. This is an ENTIRE population. And
they hate all of us, even the Eurovanners. It's long past time we, as
citizens of a democracy, took our heads out of the sand, and all

WHY they hate us SO much.

I'm looking at a TV screen of cheering Palestinians, flashing Churchill's "V
for Victory" hand signal to a Western TV camera, from the front seat of a
EuroVan in Tel Aviv. The driver is wearing stylish bifocals. I've always
been a bit confused by revolutionaries carrying the tools of the enemy,
whether that be back-to-nature hippies singing along with 1000 watt stereos,
or cultural terrorists each wearing a Timex. Huh? I just don't get it.

My kids come home from school in three hours, and my wife is stuck in San
Jose for who knows how long. What exactly should I tell the kids? Let's
watch cartoons? That my secret wish that WWIII will come and go before they
are old enough to be drafted might be coming true?

the world order has changed. the relative freedom and openness of
america has been challenged. now we must see how much we believe in
these values.
in order to preserve our openness we must immediately learn to fight the
new war against small bands of terrorists.
meanwhile, we must all steady ourselves and continue to learn how to be
better and more decent people. there is no other responce possible to
madness and violence.
i would prefer we had a goverment that did not seem so tied to the
expansion of multinational corporation as it's primary goal.
mercantilism is not an absolute value and neither is a cowboy mentality.

we no longer live in a wide open ignorant frontier society.
i advocate the values of humor, intelligence, and tolerance.
so, i have said this and will not comment again on this subject.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I tried them out on the
other car - a '94 Chevy Lumina sedan, 163000 miles - and the results
were pretty good. Too good, in fact. Now I have 'clean' spots

begin with.

Thanks too to Barbara for sharing her experience with the

Irfanview (Was:OFF TOPIC Attach pics)

Somewhere lost in the thread there was mention of file sizes and some posting of bit mapped graphics instead of jpegs.

Run, don't walk and go to and get their free utility before there are no more to download.

It's fast, small, quite functional and free. Comes in both English and German. Fast too. If you have a digital camera, it will display the file's EXIF data. Did I mention it's fast? Anyone who's put up with Photoshop's sluggish response will be quite pleased. This is the default viewer on my system for images.

Re: OFF TOPIC Attach pics

Yowser, I quit reading mail for a couple of days and all hell breaks loose!

I don't know why the rant. I disabled binary attachments to the list
mainly for security reasons and to limit their effect upon people
with lower bandwidth connections. (I belong to too many lists and wasn't
aware they were still enabled on this one or I would have turned them off sooner.)

I don't really care if you stray off topic, especially if its
friendly discussion, but consider this: people subscribe to ev_update
mainly to talk about EV's. Now, maybe a lot of them like to talk about
bikes, cameras, or even koi for that matter, but consider all the people
who really could care less about those subjects, and really want to
read/talk about EV's. Now they have to sift through that much more
of, what is in effect, junk mail.

Hence I *suggested* that folks try to stay on the overall subject.
but you know, to a degree everyone on the list has to police it,
or vote with their feet by unsubscribing I guess.
I don't have the time nor the inclination to approve each message
for content.

oh, spell checkers and simple paragraphs make it a lot easier
to read this stuff.

Folks,

Thanks for the input. Sounds like I'm not the only one.

Here's an update: it seems like I fixed this by removing the relay, taking
its cover off, and cleaning the little contacts. They were pretty carboned
up (sort of like lawnmower points) so I slid 600 grit sandpaper between them
and cleaned them up. Blew it all off with compressed air and now it works
fine. I hope it lasts.
