Re: Online Hull Speed and Hp Calculator
It told me the hull speed of my 1700 lb, 19.75' LWL boat was 8.8kts! Way more than the traditional calculation, way more than the designer's calculation and way more than my own experience. And I

Online Hull Speed and Hp Calculator
Here's a link that calculates hull-speed by length AND displacement. Its for slippery displacement sailboats, and ought to be close for electric hullforms, too. I suspect the Hp calculations are for

MOTORS
Good as always to read discussions on motor types and preferences. Mine is for an AC induction outboard as brushes, shaft mechanism can be omitted. My original plan was a diesel-electric unit, but

Re: difference between wound and permene
Larry, I am looking into that myself now. My impression is that a shunt wound should be about $500 and that a 11 h.p. PM from Lynch Electric is about $3,000. I would like to know what a PM from

Re: difference between wound and permene
So what's the cost of a 4hp shunt wound motor to a private individual like myself? What's the cost of the controller? What are the comparable costs of the PM motor and contoller?

Larry

Re: difference between wound and permene
Shunt-wound motors are superior to series wound for electric boats and should be seriously considered for all boat designs that do not use a permanent magnet motor.

(1) series wound motors

Re: difference between wound and permene
Nicely put Donaldbaer..simply put..the magnets don't require burning energy to be magnetic. Also, mmotsenbocker, if you check the life expectancy of Neodymium Iron Boron magnets/or even Simarium

Re: canoes
Thanks, the sugestion of using the pulsed control is good and gets you off the bottom rung of motors. There is a lake near here that rents electric motors. I am going to try to rent one with a canoe.

Re: difference between wound and permene
While it is true that in the past wound field (shunt wound motors) had better brushware this is no longer true in the past 10 years or so with the newer magnetic matierals the performance and

There has been much discussion about the merits of permanent magnet "PM") motors and where to buy them etc. However, shunt wound motors (fixed electromagnet replaces the permanent magnet with its
