Not all about the VR 3 as there is quite a lot about other HW products here, but interesting nonetheless. Ray. FW: [Tech-VI] From Mathieu Paquette, Product Manager, Humanware: Victor Reader Trek discontinuation. 3
Due apologies to those who have seen this, but thought it worth passing on to this list. A lot about the Stella Trek - and wouldn't it be good if that incorporated the VR playing features? Ray. From the Tech-VI list owner: Please direct any feedback about this to Humanware and not to me. I am not planning to pass feedback along to Humanware. From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Mathieu via groups.io Hi everyone, I've seen quite a few messages recently on this topic. I'm sorry I haven't been posting much recently, but it has been quite busy at work, I've been traveling a bit. But rest assured I keep monitoring messages here :) So yes, at the end of 2023, we discontinued the VRTrek. Some of the core components to make the VRTrek were no longer available, and we couldn't keep producing it. A non-negligeable amount of people were buying the VRTrek either only for the Victor (book reading part) because it had more memory and Bluetooth. Some people also bought it only for the GPS portion of it and didn't use the Victor part of it. As such, with the release of the Stream 3 (which fulfilled the more memory and Bluetooth part) and the StellarTrek, sales in the VRTrek declined quite a bit. It wasn't viable for now to consider making a newer version of it. I understand that yes, the StellarTrek is a bit pricier than the VRTrek was. However, it is also much more advanced. The GPS precision on it is much better, and it can do a multitude of AI-assisted things: OCR, address recognition, barcode scanning, color recognition, and soon, pedestrian crossing detection (coming in March), with many more features coming down the road. I understand this doesn't make everyone happy, but we also get great feedback about the Stellar's enhanced capabilities and people who are happy to see a dedicated device back in HumanWare's product lineup. I want to end this by thanking you all for the feedback. The interest and the passion shown by our community is truly something I cherish. books not saving their place 3
Hi Matthew Can you tell me what is being done to correct the issues in the $otherbooks bookshelf. When I read a book, the stream doesn’t save its place when the stream 3 shuts down, I often have to try and find my place in the book. Also, when I use the time jump functions, if I jump back 30 minutes, it seems to be much further than 30 minutes, if I am 2 or 3 hours into a book, press jump back 30 minutes, it only takes 2 presses to go back to the beginning of a book. I have tried using a book mark to save my place but the stream doesn’t save the book marks . This is very frustrating, I frequently lose my place for one reason or another and have to back track. Regards Adrien

Regain navigation capability in MP3 Files 2
Whilst we are on our wish list for the new update I would personally like the return of the ability to navigate by time within Mp3 Music files. That is, 30 seconds, 1 minute or 5 minutes and so on. For some reason this feature has been excluded from the VR3. The only current navigation options are to fast forward or rewind with the arrow keys. This is not so much an issue if you are talking about a 3 minute pop track, but if you are reviewing/ studying a classical piece up to 30 minutes long it is very frustrating not being able to jump by time to an indicated part. For example a few weeks ago we were asked to review a section 15mins 47 seconds into the movement. Currently the VR3 is an utterly unsuitable player for this task. The only option then is to dump the music tracks into the Other books folder and as you say even there, time navigation is unreliable. David Griffith

speakon suite 4
Amed at David Grifiths if you are around. Noting the constination at the present demise of the Webbie program then am I right in thinking the Speakon program could fill the gap? Is it still working? If so I could mention it on another list I am on/ Not quite sure of the atractions or virtues of Webbie as I do not use it, but thought it worth asking. Ray.

Problems with the webbie Iplayer11 program.
Hi I am sending this from another list. Regards Adrien I am raising funds to buy my own wheelchair, I have to do this because of changes to NHS services local to me. If you can help me by donating or spreading the word, please feel free. for Matthew if you are reading this
Hi Matthew I wanted to check my battery level on my stream 3 today, pressed the confirm button, it said book reader has stopped working, I had to restart my stream, the book had gone back to the beginning. I have never seen this before. I think it happened after I had released the confirm button, I did it whilst the book was playing. Is this another bug? Regards Adrien

The use for Tunein? 3
I have enabled tunein on my Stream 3, and wonder what value people are getting from the app? So far for me there is little content that I am personally finding that I cannot access with the main Stream Internet Radio and Podcast apps. Certainly the Stream existing Podcast app is far better than anything Tunein offers I think. I have found Sky News on Tunein, which, although I have not checked, may not be available through the Stream radio app. All the other stations suggested to me are already available to me via the radio app. Tunein does make suggestions as to trending Podcasts that I should try which is useful, but so far all the suggested Podcasts which I found interesting are similarly available anyway on the Stream Podcast search and have far better navigation download and storage options. I did get briefly excited when there was a suggestion that I could listen to any Premier League Football latch through Tunein, for which I would certainly have paid the subscription. However on on further investigation this is only available to those in North America. So it is a genuine question. What does tunein offer that is not already available on the Stream? I would like to know in case I am missing a trick. David Griffith

looking to sell some of my players
Hi I have decided to try the new real Sam pocket device, I have too many audio players and other devices and would like to sell some of them but don't know what to sell them for second hand. I am looking at selling my evo10, I haven't used it for some time, one of my stream mark 2 and possibly my milestone 312 ace, I have 2 of them but not sure if one of them works properly. The second one is brand new, I have only had it for 3 months. I paid over ?400 for it. My milestones are both hooked up with audible. I like the stream mark 2 best, I am not sure about the mark 3, I used it whilst in hospital yesterday but found another bug with it. I like the battery length, it seems to last a good while, probably 12 or more hours but find it a bit finicky. I tried to add my favourites from the exported favourites play list to the new favourites play list, the stream kept freezing up and I had to shut the stream down and restart it again. I also noticed that it kept saying I had added a radio station when I know I hadn't. I was deleting them from the exported play list as I added them to the new one. I have done this on the stream mark 2 and had no issues with it. I may keep the mark 3 and see how humanware goes with it but having my books on tap so to speak will be easier for me. Humanware doesn't seem to be doing much regarding the rnib and calibre to encourage me to keep the mark 3, I can access all the libraries on the real Sam phone. I know I can access all the libraries I think on my samsung a13 but with the real Sam I can do it all by voice and don't need to mess with a touch screen or other apps. I have 100 gb on my tesco sim and it would be a good way of using it. With the real Sam device you only get 1 gb so the tesco one is a far better deal, it costs me ?14 a month with club card points. I also have my alexas and google home, I can't afford to run so many plans such as youtube premium and audible. I may even sell my samsung a13 and put my sim in the new phone when I get it. I am not sure if I link the real Sam player to my gmail account, I have had one before but can't remember how it worked, it has obviously improved since then. I have the synapptic software on my main phone but synapptic want too much for me to up-date it, over ?100, but I rarely use it so would prefer to try the new system, it'll be easier for me. I don't know what to sell the players for but if any of you can advise me, or are interested in any of them, please let me know. Regards Adrien

FW: [Tech-VI] For Subscribers in the United Kingdom: BBC Sounds enables multi-room playback on Alexa devices and other improvements 6
As promised the post about the latest update to BBC Sounds. I have not tried these features yet and I do not know if they work unproblematically on what I would call third party devices, i.e. Bose, Sonos, and others. It could well be BBC Sounds will work okay on the HIMS player but again I have no idea if all the Sounds features will work properly on the Sense player. Ray. RadioToday - Friday, November 10, 2023 at 5:08 AM BBC Sounds enables multi-room playback on Alexa devices and other improvements Aniruddh Dimri, Head of Product, BBC Sounds provides an update on BBC Sounds as Alexa users can now enable multi-room audio for the skill. “It’s been a record-breaking summer for BBC Sounds, with huge listening figures for classical music at the Proms and live sport at the Women’s World Cup and the Ashes, and hit new podcasts like The Banksy Story, Call Jonathan Pie, Yeti, The Crossbow Killer, and Intrigue: The Immortals. And as the content on BBC Sounds goes from strength to strength, so too does the technology that underpins it. We’re always looking at ways we can improve the way you listen to Sounds – whether on the mobile app, web, TV app, or on your smart speaker, and if you fall into that final group, we have some news to share about some new functionality. Listeners with Alexa-enabled smart speakers are now able to listen to BBC Sounds on multiple Alexa devices at once. We know that this is something our listeners have been wanting for a long time, and we’ve worked hard with Amazon to make it happen. If you have a device group or speaker group set up in your Amazon Alexa app, you can use the group name when playing from the BBC Sounds skill, and the content will play on all devices within that group. So, if you want the big pop bangers of Sara Cox’s Half Wower to turn every room of your house into a dancefloor, just say “Alexa, ask BBC Sounds to play Radio Two Everywhere” to get it playing on every device in that group. Plus, we’ve been innovating over the last year to improve the BBC Sounds experience on Alexa, so now there are lots of things you can do with live radio on your Alexa-enabled devices. The BBC Sounds skill is the only Alexa service in the UK which lets you restart the live radio show you’re listening to, so if you miss the beginning of The News Quiz you can easily go straight back to the beginning by saying, “Alexa, ask BBC Sounds to restart.”. Also unique to the BBC Sounds skill is the ability to rewind live radio, either to a specific time, if for example you want to catch an 8am chat on Lauren Laverne’s breakfast show, you can say “Alexa, ask BBC Sounds to rewind to 8am”, or by a certain amount of time, so if you’ve missed the beginning of an interesting interview on the Today programme, you can say, “Alexa, ask BBC Sounds to rewind 15 minutes.” You can also pause live radio and resume where you left off; and fast forward your rewound stream. We want you to enjoy your favourite radio shows in a way which fits in with what you’re doing. And it’s not all about live radio on smart speakers, you can also now ask BBC Sounds for content which fits your mood or interests. By saying, “Alexa, ask BBC Sounds for Classical,” you might find a highlight from the Proms, or by saying, “Alexa, ask BBC Sounds for chill music,” you’ll find yourself listening to something relaxing, like 1Xtra’s R&B Chill, or Radio 1’s Chillout Anthems. Asking for “True Crime” will present you with one of our excellent true crime podcasts, such as The Missing Madonna, The Staircase, or Murder in Mayfair. If you ask for an on-demand show, such as Fighting Talk, the BBC Sounds skill will tell you if it’s live on the radio at that moment, so you can choose how to listen. There’s more information about what listeners can do with the BBC Sounds Alexa skill here. We’ll continue to develop features, and work closely with our partners at Amazon, to improve the experience for BBC Sounds listeners.” <a href=<a class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E" href="https://track.adform.net/C/?bn=42042416;C=0">"https://track.adform.net/C/?bn=42042416;C=0"</a> target="

Mystic Access tutorial for the Stream 3 - Now with TuneIn included! 9
Hi everyone, Mystic Access has updated the Stream 3 tutorial to include TuneIn! As a reminder, the Mystic Access tutorial for the Stream 3 is free for anyone who wants to listen to it, no purchase necessary, void where... oh wait, not that last part. With this TuneIn addition, we're now over 13 hours of content. Wow! We're in the process of updating our website (our web guy is really, really busy these days!) so it may take a day or two before we have the updated tutorial on support.humanware.com but if you'd like it now, you can get it on https://mysticaccessdownloads.com/ directly. And since TuneIn is the big change, the folks at Mystic Access were kind enough to provide it as a standalone option. I've reviewed it this weekend, and I gotta say, Kim did a phenomenal job of demonstrating all that you can do in TuneIn. Not gonna lie, I learned a thing or two myself. That can be found at https://mysticaccessdownloads.com/download/demo-of-the-tunein-bookshelf-for-the-stream-3/ ! Thank you again to Kim and Chris from Mystic Access for their great work! Stream 3 - version 1.2 announcement 73
Hi everyone! I’m pleased to announce that 1.2 will be coming out… drumroll… TOMORROW! That’s right! Tomorrow morning (sometime before noon Eastern time), we’ll be flipping the switch on for the over-the-air update from version 1.1 to version 1.2. We know you’ve been waiting for it for a while… and I hope this was worth it! We think it is. ? For TuneIn Radio, it is a first version of the implementation. Certain functionalities aren’t there yet (most notably, speed control in podcasts and the ability to resume playing where you left off in a podcast/book), as those features weren’t in the documentation we had from TuneIn. But we are working with them to get these in 1.3 (and added to their documentation for their future implementations!). So without any further ado, here’s a list of new features, and bugfixes. Please note that the bugfixes are the most “visible” ones we fixed, but we fixed more than just what’s below. Again, we think you’ll really like it! Victor Reader Stream 3 software update version 1.2 has the following new features: TUNEIN RADIO Listen to Internet radio stations and podcasts! You can listen anonymously, with a free account, or with a premium account. To learn more about TuneIn, visit their website at tunein.com . DAISY ONLINE DYNAMIC MENUS We are now supporting dynamic menus for Daisy Online (DOD) services, allowing the users to get personalized menus when navigating their national library. (This is mostly used outside of the US, the US doesn’t have a DOD library) IMPROVED NLS BARD SEARCH We are using the new API from NLS BARD which greatly improves search results. Try it! (English collection only for now) CHANGE SYSTEM LANGUAGE ON-THE-FLY You can now change your system's locale on the fly by accessing the Languages settings menu. You need to be connected to wifi as this will trigger a download of the new language. BETTER SUPPORT FOR MAC FILES The Stream 3 will now ignore "system" files (typically starting by a period or an underscore character) on SD cards. SD CARD FORMATTING SUPPORT Format your SD card directly in your Stream. Cards larger than 32gb will be formatted in exFat for better support. This option is in the diagnostic menu (boot using keys 2 6 and 8) for technical reasons. And a lot of bugfixes! This new version fixes the following issues: The 5 key will again give the podcast information when used Improved HLS streams support for Internet radio (some stations that didn’t work before might work now) Podcasts import files generated from the HumanWare Companion can now be imported We now check for update immediately after adding a podcast feed instead of waiting for the next update window Certain search results weren’t numbered, they are now Jump by percentage in text file should behave better Fixed a crash that erased the reading position in books after a shutdown Go To in the notes bookshelf works properly now Fixed an issue where some files couldn't be deleted in the $VRMusic folder Fixed an issue where automatic shutdown after 30 minutes of inactivity would not happen The Stream should return in the last used bookshelf after a reboot Bookmarks now use the first available number instead of the number after the highest bookmark, consistent with the behavior on the Stream 2 Fixed an issue where you couldn’t copy books/write to card on certain SD cards 256 gigs and larger Lots of Bookshare/text files interruptions were fixed. We are still seeing some issues and are investigating them but this release should be more stable. Fixed level navigation in the References bookshelf Navigation in NLS search results improved Exporting playlists using the 3 key in the Internet Radio bookshelf now works properly Offline bookshelves now refresh more smoothly when adding/removing content Raised the limit for book size in Bookshare Go To Time in Daisy/NISO books works properly now Fixed some crashes when recording certain Internet Radio stations Fixed some crashes and navigation issues in the podcast app Fixed a crash when adding certain Internet radio stations to the favorites Booting in diagnostic mode no

New BBC HLS global playlist 6
Not too surprisingly the BBC has again changed its radio streams, but I did suspect the one I posted here a nonth or so back mightn't be serviceable for long. Earlier today those streams stopped playing. Looking at the source I used previously and doing a refresh I found a new playlist downloadable at: https://gist.github.com/bpsib/67089b959e4fa898af69fea59ad74bc3 Here is a Dropbox link to the relevant global playlist for all the BBC radio streams: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/857jhmswfmgxgtktcnmvj/BBC-Radio-HLS-UK.m3u?rlkey=milx5wo51oxfp9a4xbrlhmyqr&dl=1 In fact the only stream I've found not playing so far is the 5Live Sports Extra stream, but that could simply be there is nothing streaming or maybe nothing available due to rights issue. (I am no expert and take no credit for this) playlist) All this is anoying to say the least. The Synapptic radio player lisno longer works, but I imagine Synapptic will do an update in their own time. If anyone feels up to separating out this global playlist into National, regional and local radio, then be my guest. Ray.

An update on the update. :) 3
Hello everyone, I'm sorry if I've been a bit more absent on the list this past few weeks, but it's been quite busy! We've just released a hotfix on the StellarTrek, our GPS product for which I am also the product manager, so I had to deal with beta testing on that, as well as an ongoing beta for the Stream 3. I know everyone is waiting on the Stream 3 update. So I wanted to give a quick, well, update on it. :) Testing is going really well. TuneIn is working out to be really great, and we have squashed quite a few bugs! So our plan was, and still is, to release the update by end of October. I'm currently aiming for an Oct 31st release. HOWEVER. We have found a bug last week (that's also present in 1.1) that happens with some SD cards that are 256 gigs or larger. The team is currently in debugging mode and looking into it. At first glance, it appears to be a driver issue, which is bad news, as changing a driver can have other unforeseen impacts that we'll have to test out. So there are three scenarios at this point. 1- We find a fix rather rapidly, and we meet the October 31st release date. That's best case. 2- We find a fix, but it takes a few weeks to fully implement and test, in which case, we'll push back the release by a few weeks. I would say November 21st would be my very latest for this scenario. 3- We find a fix, but estimate that the fix will take more than 2-3 weeks to implement. In this case, we'll release 1.2 on October 31st with the bug still present, and fix the issue in 1.3. I'm hoping for 1 or 2, and we are working very hard towards that. Also, to set expectations, there will still be a few bugs with this release. I'm expecting 1.3 will be the more definitive version (not to say it will be the last, as I have already stuffed planned for 1.4, but 1.3 should be the last significant bugfix update). Switching gear, I've seen some people mention that they would like to see more frequent updates. And you know what? I 100% share the sentiment. I also wish, as a PM, that I could have more updates on my products. If it were up to me, we would have 5, 6 updates a year. But the reality is that we're a small team at HumanWare, and the team that works on the Stream also works on other products (such as the Braille Readers). And while some features can be co-developed and ported on both the Stream and a Braille Reader, that's the exception, not the rule. I like to say, Google and Apple have more janitors than we have employees. We're in a small, niche market, and we do the best we can with the resources we have. But rest assured that the team is dedicated, passionnate, and we want to make sure to deliver you the best we can. I understand we haven't always hit the mark in the past, but it's not for lack of trying. On a final note, we are getting good cooperation from Audible on issues we're encountering, so that's very positive! And I have a meeting with another 3rd party tomorrow, I won't say who yet, but I think it's something that a lot of you would love... more info to come ;) Thank you all for your understanding. M3U File for Evo 12, possibly 10 and other devices 4
Hello Ray has assured me that the playlist file he distributed is publically available so it is OK to share further. Instructions for Evo 12 Download the Playlist File. Create a folder on the root of the SD card you are using in the Evo 12. Call it something like BBC Streams. Copy the downloaded file into that folder. Job done. Start up the Evo – navigate to the BBC Stream folder. Press enter to open it and all the BBC Stations will be available as soon as you have pressed enter on the folder. Cursor up and down to find your station of choice and pres enter to start playing – assuming you are connected to the internet. All the national and local radio stations are there and the only ones I dound that did not work were Radio 1 Dance and Relax – I am not sure that these are still working streams anyway. Ray says that this file works on the VR Stream as well but on that device you will have to go to settings with a press of the online settings menu, key 7 and navigate to import playlist from file. I have yet to test this myself. Anyway here is the download link. BBC National and Local Playlist file David Griffith Sent from Mail for Windows

BBC on the Evo 12 thanks to Ray 6
I copy below an email I sent to the Tavip list I think it is self explanatory. Well done Ray. Dear Walter The encouraging news is that Ray, I think on this list, has developed a BBC m3u playlist for playing on the Stream 3. However, I have just tested it on the Evo 12 and it works fantastically , - all you do is copy the Playlist across to the SD Card in a folder and the evo 12 can suddenly play 60 national and local BBC Radio stations for the first time. I think this is a major advance for the usability of the Evo 12. I cannot tell you if it will work on the Evo 10 as well as it is an older product than the 12 but it is encouraging nevertheless. Although this is based on work I started I don't think it is my place to share Ray's playlist file as he put enormous effort into developing it. I will email him to report the success of his playlist and it maybe that he will make it available on this list. David griffith. from Mail for Windows From: Walter - wpr at blueyonder.co.uk (via discussion list) Sent: 15 October 2023 15:01 To: discussion@... Subject: [TAVIP] Evo10 & internet radio Hi folks. I haven't used my evo 10 for nearly 2 years but today I fired it up and tried connecting to some BBC radio stations but all I got was "connection failed." I'm able to connect to other stations but not BBC stations. I'm just wondering if there is a setting I need to activate or is it the BBC is becoming evermore Apple like and restricting how you access their radio stations? Any comments appreciated.
