Re: talking books

Thanks for that info David. Think I'm going to have to do more investigations. I have far too many gadgets lol. Best Mrs Villa

----- Original Message -----
Not Steve but as a past evo 10 owner and present Victor Reader 3 owner I
would make the following short comments.
1. Evo 10 is likely to be about 拢150 cheaper than a Stream 3.
2. It will have a narrower spec but if all you want to do is read daisy
books, play music or possibly eBooks it might be fine. 3. The Evo 10 is not the latest incarnation, the Evo 12, whilst a bulkier
beast is a later model.
3. The cotemporary cheaper HumanWare device to the Evo 10 was the Victor
Reader 2, but I am not sure if this is still available and is of probably
limited life now.
4. The more expensive Victor Reader 3 has both a wider user base and wider
range of specs. It got a bad reputation for bugs when first released as it
was rushed out to compete with the SensePlayer, but gradually bugs seem to
be squashed with successive updates. The VR 3 firmware is far more developed
than the Evo, with genuinely searchable Podcast apps Internet Radio
including BBC stations, and other bells and whistles like Wikipedia, Tunein,
and Bookshare connectivity. Whether these are important enough to you to pay
the extra price is your decision.

Can anybody recommend a machine to play these on as my sonnet is now broken?

There is not a lot of difference to be fair, except that the E10 allows you
to have a folder called Daisy, which is more logical than $VRDTB.
I think the speaker is better in the E10, but that's subjective.

Thanks David,
I must correct you on one point, the E10 does not replace the E12, they are
different animals, since the E10 does not have built in stereo speakers, but
the E12 does.

Re: talking books

I am puzzled by this mention of the "Sonnet player".听 Can anyone tell me what it is, or was?

I produce/compile a talking newspaper in the Wet Midlands and as it happens we still have some of the old Kings Audio players to hand out to our listners, but would dearly like to get a player somewhere near to its ease of use.

there is the one produced by Synnaptic but its not an ideal replacement.听 the RNIB USB players don't quite cut it either.

Sad to say I fear we won't see a replacement for the Kings player because of the small market for one, but also sooner or later local TN producers are going to be online only in the next decade.Ray.

If you are looking for a cheaper USB Stick player rather than the more expensive pocket Daisy Media players you could look at the offering from eBay,, assuming you are in the UK. The price quoted was 拢53.89.

King Sovereign USB Speaker.

Note I have never used these devices, so I have no firsthand knowledge of their VIP Suitability, but I think other VIP have used Sovereign devices.

Re: Audio book reading coming to the Humanware Stella Trek

Hi!

So it's true, with our update on the StellarTrek coming next month, we'll have DAISY book playing.

For this first version, only text books will be read, not audio books. It is a simplified navigation and a simplified player compared to a dedicated device like the Stream, but I think people with StellarTrek will be happy to be able to listen to a book while commuting on a bus, etc.

You'll be able to download books on most platforms that are DOD and Bookshare.

It would seem that the Humanware Stella Trek will get an update to enable reading of audio books. I don't know anything of the details on this update which I understand will be an update to the existing Stella Trek software. I do not know if this will exstend beyond listening to books.

Given the Stella Trek has fewer buttons than the VR3 I don't know how navigation of books and possibly other audio would be handled.

This info was revealed in the Double Tap podcast which is also available on YouTube about 53 minutes into the following episode of their cSun
coverage:

I am not a great fan of the Double Tap podcasts and seeing Steven Scott waring dark glasses does not add to the attraction for me at least.

Ray.

With due apologies to people on the two lists this is being sent to.

What they mean by "Global version" isn't clear to me.听 Maybe this player will turn out to be less expensive than the competition but we do not know as yet.

VR3 and possible useful warning message about memory getting full?

To explain the subject line, I did as I said earlier, get my UK playlist working again on the VR3.听 Initially it would not work, seemingly, but this was down I think to me having subscribed to and kept too many podcasts.听 So, in short, I think the radio player was not working through lack of internal memory.

While it might be nice to have the VR3 save to an SD card by default I can see this could throw up other problems.听 I suggest that a message alerting us to when memory gets to, say, 80 per cent full, might be a good idea.听 What do others think?
