When I start the D-Rats program I get an error message "RAT: Unable to connect (Unable to connect ([Errno 10061] No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it)).? The RS-MS1 uses an Icom specific protocol for picture exchange and just decodes the DPRS data to put it on a map.
D-Rats uses its own protocol to forward data over plain data links. That means that, even if it works over d-star, it does not need d-star specifically: any transparent data transport actually works if supported by the client (e.g. ax25).
So, for d-rats, you need to set the icom transceiver to support data transfers (both fast and slow data will work) and feed the d-rats data to the trcv itself from a d-rats client software.

The RS-MS1 has nothing to do with it.

John,

?

D-RATS talks “Winlink-ese” directly to either an internet winlink server like server.winlink.org or to an RMS server over the air. To do what you want, you will have to set up an RMS server at your base station. I have never experimented with RMS servers other than connecting to one, so it is out of my knowledge base to give you any more information than that. I am sure that you can use the Winlink site and online groups to get the information you need about setting up an RMS server.

Winlink does not have D-RATS in the session dropdown mode selector.

However, the D-RATS application (which is also similar to an email client) has many of the necessary ICS forms and allows similar functionality as Winlink.

You’ll have to experiment with the D-RATS application, we did.

The nice part is the simplicity of connecting the laptop (with D-RATS application) to the DSTAR radio. Your ID-5100 manual explains it. I generally use an IC-91AD for D-RATS.

related comment: when monitoring DSTAR voice while a laptop is connected to that DSTAR radio and running D-RATS application, you will often see D-RATS traffic/text during those voice transmissions. We sometimes coordinate the D-RATS text using voice while sending the text.

Yes, The setup is correct. NO radio on location yet, so I will be doing everything from my mobile radio.

While I can conceivably just go into the hospital and use their wi-fi to send a winlink message, for my own purposes, I'd like to use D-Rats. Reason being, I can often hit other states (Michigan and Illinois somewhat reliably) with my Radio at home. If I can use RF to reach my home, and pass messages that way (send via _____? ) and another state has internet communications, I could send e-mails that way. Even if I had a different operator at home that I could send to and they could forward, I could get the message out. Hell, if another part of the state has internet comms and I could reach their station, I could send e-mail that way. If nothing else, maybe I can get them to buy an Icom 5100 and/or 7100 instead of them getting a TYT or something LOL!

I currently don't have a signal link, so sending via HF is not an option.

This isn't a SET or even really a drill. just a capability test. Other tests the state has done recently found equipment in poor repair and radios that haven't been programmed with newer frequencies being used.

I just know my ARES group loves winlink e-mail, and I'd LIKE to be able to send via radio...as a learning experience for me, and eventually be able to link to a ratflector via reflector. If I can figure THAT out, The antenna at the hospital (when they get it up) SHOULD be higher than mine at home, and would be even more capable on it's own.

I plan on testing the station ahead of time so I don't have too many surprises, but I need to figure out how to send an e-mail from my mobile to home first. (small steps LOL!)?

I read the whole D-Rats reflector guide, but it was confusing as it referred to running on "the repeater". If I just run it at home on my wi-fi, connect to my radio, (and know the IP address) is there anything I need to do other than allow contacts from network and serial?

Re: Winlink e-mail from my mobile through my base station?

Hello, I'm curious as to what the communication situation is? So, coms have been cut off from the hospital and they need to get a winlink email sent. You don't have a radio at the hospital yet, so you are trying send via your car's equipment. Is that correct??
I was wondering if the internet is down via cell phone service? Winlink messages can be sent via a phone app, in the interim until you get the radio setup at the hospital. Or, is goal to establish an RF bridge without internet?

Is there a way I can use my base radio to send winlink e-mail through the Zumspot??

I need to send some Winlink e-mails during a test for the hospital radios in our area, The Hospital I am assigned to does not have a radio YET (New hospital, just opened. They ARE committed to installing a radio), so I will be setting up in the parking lots for the area test.

I currently don't have a signal-link or anything like that to send packet radio.

There are at least 3 D-Star repeaters in the area, 2 are a little more "home grown" the 3rd is a professional quality set-up. All 3 are normally linked to 19b (basically our state wide repeater network).

If I can avoid using those repeaters, I would prefer that option. If not, I'll ask the guy with the home grown repeaters if I can link to a ratflector for 4 hours. Oh yeah, the test is over 4 hours, hence not wanting to tie up a repeater.

So basically, I want to talk from my car, to my home rig, and through the home rig, connect to the internet via the hotspot. I understand (I think) That I would need a computer hooked up to the home computer. but if that is the case, can I just use the wi-fi on the computer hooked up to the base rig?

Put another way, which options are possible and/or preferred to send a winlink e-mail from my car for up to 4 hours.

1) Car to local repeater, connected to a ratflector
2) Car to home radio, then to Zumspot (like a crossband repeater?)
3) Car to home radio, then to internet via LAN/Wi-Fi
4) Suck it up and get another hotspot to take with you in the car!
5) Other

Sorry, VERY new to this and got thrown in the deep end for this ARES test. My ARES group doesn't use D-Star (yet) but is big on Winlink. If I can figure this out, I might be able to push for more D-Star/D-Rats use.

Re: Winlink e-mail from my mobile through my base station?

That was one of my thoughts, I just wonder if running too high of power on the base 5100 could hurt the pi.
I KNOW I can hit the radio at home from the hospital, just not sure the level of power needed to hit the radio in the car from the base....i THINK 5w would work....will need to test.

?

I'm learning more here as I go. I am assuming I can just run a ratflector from my home computer, and hook it up the 5100 to take rf traffic in? Could that be a better option??

That, and now i'm unsure how to connect to a ratflector with the pi. I thought that there were ratflectors that you could just connect to like a reflector.... like say 19-D. and now think I was wrong.

I MAY be getting an older 880 that I might just set up as a permanent radio to get into a ratflector I set up at home.

Side note: Our terminology is very confusing LOL.

First thought is … if you can reach you home base station from you vehicle in the parking lot:

computer in the vehicle running D-RATS or Winlink connected to the ID5100 - RF - to your ID5100 base in cross-band repeat mode - RF - to hotspot.

Be aware that Microsoft is dropping all support for Windows earlier than Windows 10 after 2022. This usually means that the python package maintainers also will tend to also drop support for those packages.

Currently the minimum version of python supported is python 3.7, and support ends for python3.7 on June 27, 2023.

What that means is that if you intend to run an updated d-rats on anything older than Windows 10, or python 3.8, you need to get your system setup now for it, as the required packages may no longer be easily available after those end of life dates.

And also indicate if you can work on or debug packaging for the platForms. Debug means that you can actually figure out what is not working and now to make it work, and are willing to join.

Please indicate if you can test for a platform, and try to let us know if it works, and the community can try to determine the fix.

I personally will not be able to install any python packages that require purchasing a license for commercial use, even if they are available free for personal non-commercial use, so I will not be able to test them.

Example for me:

Windows 7, Msys2 Python 3.10.5, debug, test
Windows 10, Msys2 Python 3.10.5, debug, test
Anti-X Linux 19.2, Python 3.7.3 (currently), debug, test

Re: D-RATS radio setup help

Click the ADD button and create a new serial device. The COM port is where the ID-880 is connected. Speed should match the serial data speed set in the radio (4800 or 9600).
Check the incoming connections box and click the ON button.
Please post your Ratflectors IP address so we can connect to it.
