The RS-MS1 uses an Icom specific protocol for picture exchange and just decodes the DPRS data to put it on a map. D-Rats uses its own protocol to forward data over plain data links. That means that, even if it works over d-star, it does not need d-star specifically: any transparent data transport actually works if supported by the client (e.g. ax25). So, for d-rats, you need to set the icom transceiver to support data transfers (both fast and slow data will work) and feed the d-rats data to the trcv itself from a d-rats client software.
The RS-MS1 has nothing to do with it.
