Operation has been fixed, by installing a thrust bearing and a ball bearing, inboard and outboard of the thrust plate and a sleeve for the graduated dial to ride on.? The sleeve corrects the tendancy of the dial to cant and bind the rotation and provides something for the hex nut to clamp against as preload.? Compound is snug and smooth, the only thing to deal with now is the backlash, some other time.?

Rui, my Craftsman 12x36 has a direct drive motorized Z axis. Not sure what you mean by "all the electronics"? Eventually I might get around to doing a motorized X axis. The hardest part is deciding how you are going to motorize the axis, and implementing your decision. It took me years after following all of the discussions?on the web to actually?doing it. Let me know any questions you might have or if you just want encouragement.? I did it all by myself without anyone to talk to, that made it tough. Until I got to the programming part where I got some great help. Once you get the motor mounted I have a great stand alone program for motorizing an axis. 开云体育Have, yes… installed – no.? ? But boy do I want it… But a bathroom remodel has taken precedence. ? The real issue is mounting the motor in a convenient place and getting it connected.? The plan is to use a timing belt and a 2:1 or 3:1 reduction from the ELS motor. ? I got a Step direction integrated servo.? So power and a few signals is all that’s needed to the motor and of course the encoder to the spindle.? ? Directions are good but you need to be able to solder and depending on the computer used, it can be a little daunting to get it programmed.? ? Greg |
Making a New, Elliptical Compound Thrust Plate/Large Dial Upgrade
Making an Elliptical New Compound Thrust Plate/Large Dial Upgrade ? I'm installing larger dials both the cross slide and compound on a Craftsman 6" MK2 lathe and had the need to make a new thrust plate for the compound because the original is cast and the boss were the dial base needs to mount is tapered due the the draft. The thrust plate is elliptical and I wasn't sure how I was going to do until popped up.? I grasped the concept quickly and did not actually watch the video through the machining process.? Had I done so, I might have been dissuaded as it looked too complicated.? Start of the project, with the rotary table mount plate and the thrust plate stock pinned to it for turning the boss. Originals are on the left, new dial on the right. ?Turned boss.
There is a problem here, however.? It doesn’t work smoothly and will require some remedial work.? The new dial cants when the set screw is locked.? I think because the set screw is off-center and it clamps on the transition between solid shaft and the start of threads on the end for the handle/nuts.? ? More on this to come. |

开云体育Overhauling machine tools can be a big part of the fun, or it can be a real drag.? I've done a few also.? I bought a couple of the asian "mini-" machines new, but the newest since then is my 1986 Select knee mill. It was well enough used but did not require any remedial work.? The one that took the most work was a pre-WWII Rivett 1020, two years of extensive repairs, remanufacturing of parts and even some castings/machining, but it was worth it.? When I moved 7 yrs ago, it got toppled on its face, so did not make the move.? While it was getting repaired, I came into a 1946 motor generator Monarch 10EE with a Newall DRO that had recently been fully restored, so all I had to do was get it here and set up.? The only machine tool I have here that was new or well-overhauled when I got it is my Atlas TH42, and it needed a good hosing down with WD-40. :) I have overhauled a couple more, and one of them needs to be overhauled again. :( Someday I'd like to buy something that is ready to work as soon as it lands on the bench.
