Alternative QY100 QY70 lighting

Hi - has anyone here tried the MIDI Gooseneck Light option of illuminating their screen? I've seen the ALVA MGL1 LED advertised around on the internet but never seen anyone with stock. I thought one Gearsource vendor was promising a few weeks back and placed an order but heard back later that the listing had been removed and they canceled my order. So I've never had one of these to try, and have not read of anyone else using one so far.. If available anywhere, it might be a reasonable alternative to the open heart surgery of a backlight modification. https://www.bekafun.com/en/a/2125683/alva-audio-mgl1-midi-gooseneck-light-150mm https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/715147-REG/Alva_MGL1_MGL1_Midi_White_LED.html https://www.rme-shop.com/acatalog/ALVA---MIDI-White-LED-Gooseneck-Light--15-cm-length-118.html Rocky

Hi everyone, new QY-70 owner with a "pattern" question
25
Hello, thanks for this nice group. Just purchased not one but TWO :) cute QY-70 units. Why two, well the first one was basically mint; then a very beaten up one, with an unresponsive keyboard and an exhausted backup battery, showed up for a low price and I snatched it up "for spares". I repaired it and now works like a charm. Decided to keep both. :) Now the question(s). :D I did read and re-read the manual and also the FAQs by Johannes Emmerling... but I can't actually figure out how to compose sequences on this machine. I was able to record simple multitrack phrases (up to 8 bars) but that's it. Let's say I enter Pattern mode, select an empty User pattern (Style?), select a Section (say "Main A") and record a few bars in Overdub or Step for Drum and Bass, on two tracks. Then I pass on to "Main B" and record another few bars, with a different theme. Say I leave empty everything else. Now: how do I combine those two Drum + Bass "sections" I recorded, in order to have a complete sequence? Say I want "MainA - MainB" in a loop. How do I accomplish this? Should I select Song mode and somehow (how?) "copy/paste" those pattern sections inside the Song? Or is there some other way, maybe using Pattern Jobs..? I did not understand what to do. Sorry, I know it must be trivial but I'm a noob with this cute box! The manual is so skinny for such a complex device, and being 20+ years old means not much tutorials to be found. Thanks for reading. Fernando

Effects
15
Group members- I’ve been working with both the QY70 and the QY100 for years now, and I’m getting pretty good at putting patterns, tracks, and songs together. However, I’m still searching for ways to use the QY’s effects better. If anyone has any basic settings, tips, or tricks you would like to offer for good reverbs, delay, echo, chorus, pan, distortion, etc., I would appreciate your input. The more details you care to include, the better. Thanks for keeping the group going. Bank Differences in FX Algorithms?
4
#file-notice
Hello, Working w the QY70 and am stumped on an XG FX question: I've been trying to figure out if there's a difference beyond the preset parameters in alternate bank FX (e.g. Chorus 1 vs 2 vs 3 vs 4). If I get under the hood w Sysex and set *all* the parameters, I can't tell much of a difference between them. This necessarily includes setting all the underlying XG params the FX UI doesn't display. I've gone through the XG specs, the QY manual, and even other XG module list books. I found a single detail on differences: Phaser 1 and 2 provide alternate ranges for the 'Stage' parameter. According to page 12 of the QY70 List Book, Phaser 1 spans 6-10 stages, while Phaser 2 spans 3-5 stages. The SW1000X list book has block diagrams for the effects, but the core of the algorithm is black boxed w/o details. Beyond that, the diagrams only show the overall algorithm's filters, feedback paths, early reflections, and mixers. This question goes for Reverb 1 vs 2 vs 3, and all the alternate FX that constitute the bank variations for XG effects. Unfortunately, I haven't yet had time to go through each permutation and A/B them by ear. Was hoping someone had a clue to why these variations exist when you can tweak them to sound the same by adjusting values under the hood. Is the purpose to provide access to a few preset Sysex only FX params for users working entirely through the FX UI? Did they figure most users would simply take them to be fundamentally different algorithms? Or is there an actual difference between the numbered effects? Thanks, J

Muting individual pattern tracks in song mode - QY100
8
Hello, I have both a QY700 and QY100, being a "amateur" traditional songwriter, I use pattern mode to formulate the verse/chorus/bridge/sections and then song mode to put it all together with chord changes adding lead parts etc. which I then record/sequence into to my iPad. My question is can I mute the pattern tracks separately (not just the whole pattern) on the 100 in song mode like the 700 allows me to (which allows 16 pattern tracks to be muted/soloed separately)? I love both QY's but I am finding I can do almost everything I need with the 100 - and if I can do this or find a workaround, I would probably sell the 700..although that will be tough as it is an incredible (the best ever?) sequencer - I just don't need all those midi tracks and it's not portable like the 100.

QY-100 Blank Screen After switching mode
6
HI there, i was working on the QY-100 changing midi cables when i accidentally switched mode from midi to pc. The screen went immediately blank but everything else kept working, i had audio and midi control. Now every time i turn it on, the screen flashes for a millisecond and then goes blank but the audio and functionality keeps working. Anyone have a clue about what is this and how to fix it? Thanks

Cycling song playback
2
Hi all, apologies if this has been asked before. Is there a way to have the QY70 cycle playback of a chord sequence? For example, so I can jam ideas over a solo pattern before committing to a recording. Assume the SONG is only made up of MAINs and FILLs, so no INTRO, ENDING or BLANK. Many thanks and regards, Andy

QY70 screen and piano pad repairs
6
Happy New Year to the QY Group!!! I have a couple of questions on repairing a QY70 which I hope can get some advice with... 1. The black & white piano keys on my QY70 have recently lost sensitivity, especially around the middle C, D and add9/M keys. Does anyone know how these can be improved? I know Akai MPC pad sensitivity can be improved with the simple hack of adding a thin layer of rubber (or something similar) to reduce the gap between the pad and the sensor. Has anyone done this before and could suggest a method of cleaning or improving the sensitivity? 2. My LCD screen is now missing one of the vertical columns which seems to have died. Could this be a case of checking for a loose connection or is this totally unfixable? I know these little gadgets were first made in 1997 so components are starting to get a bit tired, but I'm happy to open up the bonnet and have a look underneath if its worth it - otherwise I'll be checking out Ebay for a replacement. Any help would be greatly appreciated -HNY!

QY70 Not enough songs
4
My rig is centred on the QY70, with 90% of sounds coming from there. It’s mainly used as a tone generator but some songs are furnished with actual sequences. Some songs require that I run some “no note” sequences, so that some parameters are in place e.g switching on/setting the timing of portamento. These sequences run automatically when I use a programme change command to select the right song. I have 4 or 5 various controllers triggering sounds live. Each song in our set requires a different set of sounds, so it makes sense to select a new song in the sequencer for each song. Well the inevitable happened and we now have more songs in the set than the QY70 can hold. I’m not sure of the best way to address this. Buy a second qy70. Data filer loading the next set in the interval. Fine if this works but could be a pain in rehearsal jumping from set to set and back again. Purchase a whole new keyboard/sequencer that holds 100 songs – have to learn a new synth architecture. Anyone got any suggestions?

QY-700 external midi on multiple channels
11
Is there a way to use the QY-700 as an external multitimbral instrument with midi coming from a DAW. I have setup the pattern mode with 16 different sounds, some go to the midi out. Is there a way to send multiple midi sequences on different midi channels at the same time. Now it only receives on the track which is selected

Youtube videos
Hey guys, I just noticed 2 very interesting videos on youtube, you might be interested in watching. https://youtu.be/spneD7V1zpE a Qy100 using a TG300 screen! have anyone tried this? seems like the screen is deeper, so they couldn’t add the cover . there is no more information about it in the video. will it make noise like EL screens? https://youtu.be/s1cxfR6mt6k Dido’s “until you’re resting here with me” build only with the xg synth of the qy100. Holly molly! Does show that arrangement is way more important than the sound source. Great great work!

Hi, Welcome to the group! I’m not exactly sure what you’re trying to achieve but a song can only play one pattern section at a time. However *each* pattern not only has 7 sections (Intro, Main A/B, Fill A/B, Ending) but also *each* of those sections has 8 tracks ( *each* with their own instrument). So that still means that your single pattern’s “Intro” section could have 8 instruments… and of course a drumkit is actually only considered one instrument (even though it has many different sounds for all the pieces of the drumkit). So what you would probably want to do on a QY70/100 is to just play all your drum sounds in the DR1 track in a pattern’s section. If you really wanted to, you could still play just the kick sound on the DR1 track and a Hi-Hat (or what not) on the DR2 track and a third drum sound on the PC (percussion) track and a fourth drum sound on the BS (Bass) track and a 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th drum sound on the C, C2, C3, C4 tracks. Note: Although the tracks on a pattern are labeled as drum2, drum2, percussion, bass, etc, they can ALL be assigned to whatever instrument you want them to be… so each pattern’s section can be 8 tracks of drums if so desired. I am not sure why Yamaha decided to give the pattern tracks specific names (instead of numbers like the song tracks) but they act the same as the song tracks insofar as any one of them can be assigned to any instrument (or to the same instrument if desired). I have to admit I’m a little unsure as to why you want to split up the drums into individual tracks when you can play them all on one track, but everybody has their specific use cases… The main point is that you can achieve what you want but I think you need to look at it from a different direction since a song can only play a single section of a single pattern (but all 8 tracks of that pattern’s section) at a time. Even with just a single drum track drum track you can play as many different drum sounds as you want on that one track… You’re really only limited by the polyphony of the QY which is 32 (or 64… I can’t remember which right now). One last note: If you’re going to assign drums to all of the tracks of a pattern then you probably want to ensure that the Chord Type is set to ‘bypass” for each of those tracks. (Accessed by the following buttons when your on the 1st Pattern Screen: Menu->Utility->Menu->Chord Phrase Table). The reason is because if you decide to use the Chord progression feature in the 1st song screen then you don’t want the drums to be transposed or harmonized based upon the Chord progression. Of course, if you are going to use ALL the tracks in a pattern as drums then you probably would not want to use the Chord progression feature at all, in which case you don’t need to worry about setting the Chord Type for each pattern track. The QY70/100 manual is not too great as a reference, but it is actually really good in so far as it is a great step-by-step tutorial that walks you through most of the features of the machines. It kind of looks daunting initially but it goes by really really fast and it helps in getting your head wrapped around how all the patterns, tracks, and sections work. New QY100 Owner, Super Excited
Hi all, thanks for the permission to enter the group. First off, a little about me! Ive been playing/producing music professionally for 15+ years, i am an acoustical consultant, and i have a serious love for old school gear like this. These pieces in particular hold a place in my heart for a few reasons. First because the moment i saw the QY in the Bjork Arte Island documentary i was hooked on the idea of writing music surrounded by the outdoor elements, and secondly, because i often find writing on laptops quite distracting. These allow me to write without distraction, and produce later. ANYWAY. I briefly owned a QY70 a few years ago and loved the idea of it, but it never fit in the way i wanted it to, and i now realize it was my fault in the way i approached it. I just picked up the QY100 and im already in love with the hardware. Im sure ill have several questions along the way, but only some higher level thinking stuff for now. Getting used to the two modes of writing takes a minute...but as i think of it now, it kinda reminds me of Ableton Live. The pattern mode being the "Session View" and the Song mode being the "Arrangement" View. This cleared a lot up for me, but im still trying to wrap my brain around how exactly to organize the patterns, sections, etc in my brain for later access. Like, each pattern has 7 sections...that cant be accessed without that pattern assigned to a track. So, i can make a few different patterns using the different sections, but id likely keep them all one instrument...like a kick drum, but 7 different sections. So, tell me if my workflow makes sense. Let's say i have a pattern with 1 drum track (kick drum). I can then make 6 sections of that kick drum, all with the same audio FX. Then, i arrange that pattern how i want it in the song mode. Next, i do the same thing with some hi hats. I can add entirely new FX, then arrange this pattern (and its sections) with the kick drum in the song mode. Eventually, as i fill up tracks, i can mix down into a 3 track, keeping the original two for editing later if needed, EQ, Reverb, ETC. Am i on the right track? Thanks so much, and looking forward to chatting more. -Agent 14 -- ---------- classic electronic music nerd
