Riser Boards for FT-101 Series including ZD in the U.K. ?
3
Does anyone know where I can get hold of set of riser boards for the FT-101, B, E, F Series including the ZD from the U.K? Tried eBay but they all seem to be from the USA and delivery to the UK is a killer. James www.Md0mdi.im

Voltage charts
Can someone help me identify the pins on Fig 4-9 in the service manual on page 4-17? Where are MJ 1-6? Pins 1-22 are illustrated on page 6-12 but I can't find them on the unit. Feeling a bit blind. And what does the "E" symbol mean on the table? --Kenoli

Gray Paint for FT-101ZD Cabinet Screws

I bought some 316 stainless steel screws for the FT-101ZD cabinet covers from McMaster-Carr. Can anyone recommend a spray-paint that is the cabinet’s shade of gray? Thank you. 73, Michael Smith, N4KZO

Where have they all gone!
7
I have owned my FT101Z from new some 40 years ago and after a long time off the air I am back active on CW again. I am very fond of the equipment (as I was wth my FRDX400 receiver before it - which I wish I had kept!). Over the last year or so I have been looking to buy another similar set (or the ZD version). My search has been less than successful only seeing one '101Z for sale in the UK - and that at a price which frightened me! So, considering how many of these pieces of equipment were made and sold (not to mention the earlier FT101 series) - where are they now - there must be tens of thousands of them 'resting' somewhere!

FT101ZD3 HV Capacitors
4
After my mains transformer burned out due to HV capacitor problems its now getting the full treatment to restore it, i managed to purchase a replacement transformer on ebay which is in good condition this is all fitted and working fine but i still have some capacitor problems. i have stripped out the wafer switch add on in order to remove the capacitors hidden behind it and ive found a capacitor (factory fitted) not listed in any service manual, ive checked all the circuits for version 1,2 and 3 also the FT901/902 and its not there, its a disc ceramic 4.7nf 1000v one side soldered to chassis the other to the bottom of the main tank coil just wondered if anyone else is aware of this mod and what its for. also some of the switched capacitors on the tank coil are 1000v some are 3000v would it be better to replace them all with a higher voltage or would this be detrimental in any way also is it better to use silver mica or polystyrene as replacements for disc ceramic as dipped mica seems to be very scarce. i would appreciate any input on this matter, and with regards to working on the HV section i am an electronics engineer and fully aware of all the dangers but im not a designer so sometimes need a bit of help with such matters. thanks

ft101 Problem
12
I have an FT-101 that I used back in the 70s. I was trying it out today with a long wire antenna. I fired it up, tuned it in, everything went fine. Then I moved it from one surface to another while it was on. Bad Idea I guess. It went dead as I was moving it. There was a slight smell of burned electronics just for a second. The smell didn't persist. I checked and the power input fuse was blown. I pulled off the case and examined it as carefully as I could. Looked all through the power supply. No sign of any arc or burned component. Same everywhere else I could see. At this point no smell of burned electronics. I got another fuse and decided to give it a try without the mic to make sure it didn't slip into transmit mode. Lights and fan came on, but no reception. Silence. Nothing on the s-meter. Anyone have any thoughts? --Kenoli

Question for Roger VE7LB
2
Both appreciating feedback and enjoying reading posts I would like to ask a few questions but thought these might be better under 'Chats' - but I cannot work out how to raise a 'chat' message. Is there something I am missing. One of my questions is - do you think anybody would be interested/find it useful to read about my activities in connection with investigating my recently 'gone deaf' FT101Z? Your comments appreciated. Alistair GM4ENF.

FW: [Yaesu-FT-101] Deaf FT101Z

FORWARDED MESSAGE - *From:* Alistair via groups.io <alistairfyffe@...> *Sent:* Wednesday, October 20, 2021 7:58 AM *To:* [email protected] *Subject:* [Yaesu-FT-101] Deaf FT101Z My bought from new 40 year old FT101Z has suddenly ‘gone deaf’. It still works but received signal strength is now very low. S meter not showing anything on receive and attenuator apparently not working. I have followed the guidance in the Maintenance Service Manual and my reasoning leads me to think the problem is in the RF board- either Q101 <3SK53-03) or Q102. I have no analytical equipment except digital VOM and am waiting on board extenders so I can extract the RF board to check it out. Another question is – what would be a modern equivalent for replacing the 3SK53? Any advice gratefully received. Alistair (Al) GM4ENF.

BM setting on ft101B
5
I think my BM adjustment was inadvertently changed when adjusting the ALC. They are next to each other. I couldn't find anything about this adjustment in the user or repair manuals. Can any help me make sure the BM adjustment is set correctly? On a different topic. I have an FT-101B that I used back in the 70s. It has been sitting in a box for maybe 40 years. I started it up using a variac and bringing the voltage up slowly. It is clear from noise in various controls and switches that there are dirty of corroded contacts. Is it advisable to spray contact cleaner on noise controls and, if so, what is the correct way to do this? It does send and receive. I look forward to and appreciate any assistance on these two matters. Thanks, --Kenoli KB6EMG
