Where have they all gone!

I have owned my FT101Z from new some 40 years ago and after a long time off the air I am back active on CW again.? I am very fond of the equipment (as I was wth my FRDX400 receiver before it - which I wish I had kept!).? Over the last year or so I have been looking to buy another similar set (or the ZD version).? My search has been less than successful only seeing one '101Z for sale in the UK - and that at a price which frightened me!? So, considering how many of these pieces of equipment were made and sold (not to mention the earlier FT101 series) - where are they now - there must be tens of thousands of them 'resting' somewhere!

Good day to you Alistair,

I don’t try to keep up with the availability of the FT-101ZD, but I have noticed by casual observation that there aren’t many for sale, worth buying or not. ?I expect the radios that are operational are being used by operators, happy with what they have and have no plans to part with them. ?As a side note, I have a Mk 0. ?I would that it had AM mode capability, but that is okay for now. ?I understand that the Mk 0 has been successfully modified, adding AM mode.

If you really need a digital display, you can buy a nice one that is external, for a reasonable price:?

I recommend you keep your FT-101Z clean and corrosion free, well aligned and maintained, as is: be happy with it.?

Hi all,
my FT-101 basic... was literally a barn/storage find ..... this year from an SK.
I feel incumbent to restore it; which only requires its operational faculties as its in Immaculate condition!!!

the ESP products look great and the?
Broadband preamps like interesting

You are welcome Alistair. ?One other recommendation, if you haven’t done this already: install an Alpha Delta ATT3G50U Transi-Trap (TM) Surge Protector at the RF socket or somewhere in the coaxial RF feed-line. ?They use a gas-discharge tube, spark-gap cartridge (Alpha Delta calls an Arc-Plug) with gap set to allow unimpeded transmission of RF less than or equal to 200 watts, while a short-circuit occurs by breakdown, above 200 watts, per Alpha Delta Specifications. ?This will provide significant protection from electromagnetic pulse (EMP) occurrences, man-made or natural, such as near lightening strikes. ?Of course, I recommend disconnecting the feed-line altogether when any risk of any type EMP exists, and when the station is not in use. ?Here is a review:?

Here is a good technical paper discussing actual expected breakdown values of the gas discharge tubes used:?

May God bless you.

Thanks again Michael.? I thought about one of these devices (or something similar) many years ago but as electric storms are relatively rare around here (one or two a year visible/audible) I decided against one.? Always disconnect antennas on rare occasions these these events occur.... Alistair GM4ENF

Understand. ?Lightening is not the only source of EMP. ?Certainly, your choice. ?Michael, N4KZO
