FT101ZD3 HV Capacitors

Nigel jones

After my mains transformer burned out due to HV capacitor problems its now getting the full treatment to restore it, i managed to purchase a replacement transformer on ebay which is in good condition this is all fitted and working fine but i still have some capacitor problems.
i have stripped out the wafer switch add on in order to remove the capacitors hidden behind it and ive found a capacitor (factory fitted) not listed in any service manual, ive checked all the circuits for version 1,2 and 3 also the FT901/902 and its not there, its a disc ceramic 4.7nf 1000v one side soldered to chassis the other to the bottom of the main tank coil just wondered if anyone else is aware of this mod and what its for.
also some of the switched capacitors on the tank coil are 1000v some are 3000v? would it be better to replace them all with a higher voltage or would this be detrimental in any way also is it better to use silver mica or polystyrene as replacements for disc ceramic as dipped mica seems to be very scarce.
i would appreciate any input on this matter, and with regards to working on the HV section i am an electronics engineer and fully aware of all the dangers but im not a designer so sometimes need a bit of help with such matters. thanks?

Hello Nigel.? I cannot help with your questions but I have recently been investigating my 'deaf' '101Z <see elsewhere on here> including examining as much of it as is accessible without 'removing' anything.? Do you have any photographs of the wafer switch and unidentified capacitor and their location?? I would like to compare your set with my own.? Thanks.

Hi Alistair,
At the moment no I don't but I will back in my workshop later today as I had some new components turn up so I will take some close ups of the rig.
Your problem sounds more like power supply problems than receive board, if you down load the version 3 manual from fox tango there are voltage reference pages and diagrams based on serial no.

Thanks for the feedback Nigel.? Interesting thought.? At the risk of mixing up different subject content/messages; everything except incoming signal strength is completely fine - always get good reports.? I am compiling some stuff on my investigations which I will put on original message thread in due course.? I have the voltage information, I am not a 'professional' but after a lifetime of construction/repairing I sort of know my way round circuits - trouble is access to the various test points - but that will be in stuff I am writing....?
