Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
I have fancied going greenlaning for ages. I even got as far as talking to the TRF at the BMF this year, but that is as far as it has got. However the two piece of advice that they gave that stuck in my mind was a) don't buy a cheap bike like a Bashan or another of these Chinese imports, as they don't last as well as Jap, KTm's etc and b) get a bike, unless it is an old 2 stroke, with electric start (the Serrow has one), as the last thing you want to be doing when are totally nackered, in a muddy puddle up to your knees, is trying to kick over a hot 4 stroke single. --- In W650riders@..., Laura <laurauk.rider@...> wrote: Well you got me looking at an xt225 now, there's a yamaha dealer in

Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
Not so sure that is true larry. I am sure that I saw in one of the bike mags recently that a company was looking to develop a 2 stroke that was a midweight. The emission laws effectively made them illegal rather than the premise of a 2-stroke being illegal in itself. --- In W650riders@..., "Larry Botheras" <larry.botheras@...> wrote: I think it's now illegal for any bike over either 50 or 125cc to be two stroke??? Re: Exhausts & retro noise
I've just sent you a very short video clip in AVI which has been trimmed in Windows Movie Maker. I'll send another short clip direct from the camera. They are both well over 2 mgb or I would have sent longer ones but you should be able to snatch an idea of quality. Unfortunately these cameras use 'conditional refresh' compression algorithms so the worse images come from moving ...either the camera or the subject as the camera does little work if the image changes but a small amount.
Let me know if you don't get it...should be within 5 minutes of you receiving this one

Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
Don't worry Laura. , Daniel's confusion may arise
from the fact that very few proper competition bikes can be used on the road In
the States. Most trail type bikes over there are very road oriented.
Over here, you can buy almost any machine?and
put it on the road and all enduro and trials machines can have number plates.
The reason?the Honda XR's are so good is that they are built for full-on
competition and so are incredibly well made. There are no compromises to mass
production at the expense of strength or reliability but being Honda they are
utterly civilised as well and have fairly normal service
intervals.?
?
To put that into perspective,?my Husqvarna
four stroke TE350 that I used on the road had no oil pump, relying instead on
crankcase pressure to move the oil around, HAD to run on Mobil 1 15/50 and was
meant to have the engine side cases stripped off every 5 hours of use to replace
the oil gallery reed valves.??The Honda is just like a typical 250cc
Jap commuter..Oil changes every thousand miles, oil the chain
occasionally...normal stuff!
?

Hmm...Those
weren't based on the XR though...they're water-cooled for starters...Not
available in the UK and not many grey imports brought in because they
weren't as good as an XR at fast stuff and weren't as good as a Serow at

Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
I'm sure yo uwould find it going on in your area laura. There is a weekly (?) paper out called Trials and Motocross (if my memory stands me right), which has loads of listings. Haze...give us a shout when you are having your first proper go and, as long as you are happy, I'll try and come and give you some support. --- In W650riders@..., Laura <laurauk.rider@...> wrote: Thanks Haze, looks really good. as high as you can, that's not what I like doing. The only places I've been to in Wales are Brecon beacons and I popped over the border from Chester once for an afternoon. It's a long way to Aberyswyth has to be planned properly.

very good. I have spoken to Marianne a couple of times and she recommends the
Serrow if you are on a lower budget.

STRIKES AGAIN
Every time I get on this list, I seem to be wanting a second time
after a while. he he. That's quite a lot 1.5 inches. I like sitting on other people's bikes. Yeah narrow that makes a lot of difference I know.

You can't rule them out just because they look high. I've made the morini lower now by dropping the forks through the yokes by
about 1.5inches. It makes loads of difference & it still has plenty of ground clearance. The taller looking bikes are often narrower as well
which makes a difference as your legs are reaching more directly to the
ground, if that makes sense. Get a few people to let you sit on their bikes to
get an idea.

I've sort of been interested in them as they look comfy (riding position), well the ones I saw but don't know what they were.
But they are mostly high aren't they. Thanks for that long explanation really
helpful. Laura

That is modern trials...The bikes are 250cc or 300cc two stroke singles, tuned for instant wheelies with loads of bottom end grunt.
They are very low geared and have absolutely NO seat...just a painted black area approximately where the seat would have been.
Other off-road sports are:
Motocross where the bikes are tuned for power and like trials,
have no lights and are not road legal. MX bikes actually handle really
well but are stupidly tall to give them masses of suspension
travel...expect seat heights in excess of 960mm. Proper Supermotos are basically Motocross
bikes with road front wheels on.
Enduro...Where the bikes are very similar to motocross but are
more softly tuned with gear ratios more suitable to road use, and have
lighting sets. These bikes are usually road legal in the UK and make literally stunning commuters. In all seriousness, you would have to try very hard
indeed to find a better bike than a late model Honda XR250 for general urban duties. They weigh...brace yourself...230 lbs....under half your
Harley...and 30 bhp in a bike that light makes for serious performance. My old
Yamaha 465 with 42 bhp would shut down any musclebike under the sun up to 60
mph. A lot of Enduro bikes were bought as 'greenlaners'. Green lanes are Roads...i.e. 'Rights of way open to all traffic' which were not tarmac. In
other words, forgotten about or not used. Because they were roads, bikes
still had to be fully road legal and obey national speed limits. They are
often just muddy tracks across moors and rivers and to be honest, full-on
Enduro bikes are not designed for such tricky and challenging narrow
paths....But being macho men we used 'em anyway!
Trail. These bikes are less extreme and less robust. They have
less suspension travel, less power and are often more civilised.
You used to find some in every makers range but today in the UK, only grey
imports are found. They were popular amongst older trail riders ( the ones who
knew what they were doing). James has mentioned the Yam Serow, the Kawasaki
Sherpa and so on, but older bikes like the XT250 were very good and frankly, the XR250 Honda is so good and usable it'll cross into both camps.
All off-road bikes are brilliant fun, combining punchy motors with incredibly light weight. Both motocross and Enduro bikes have
to have superb handling stability because they are built to win races on
bumpy rough ground and as a consequence, round town or the lanes, a motocross or
enduro bike with road oriented tyres on usually blows 'proper' road bikes
into the weeds.
They are incredibly comfy too...really soft seats and
amazingly good suspension make for a real armchair riding position.
Very high credibility too......

Trials? Is that motocross? exciting. I like the idea of riding in the woods, think it's called greenlaning. Liked riding on the grass at the rally next weekend. Laura, here's some trials riding:

In the UK XR's are street legal. Almost Enduro
bikes are. I used to ride a Yamaha IT465 on the road and more recently a
Husqvarna TE350. The XR 250 is a lighter, quicker and better made bike than
any dual-sport compromise and once tyres are changed, makes a brilliant little
road bike.

You'd struggle to get a better urban tool than
an XR with road tyres on.

Surely Armours can't be the only option; if you posted on the Real Classic forum I am sure you would turn up others that could make them. Thing is I would only want the whole exhausts, as I am loath to cut the down pipes thus losing the stock pipes, especially if the powers-to-be ever decide that only stock pipes can be used for MOT's etc. --- In W650riders@..., "Jonhaddock@..." <jonhaddock@...> wrote:

Re: Bored here at work...so...
Hmmm...I wasn't thinking about me...I was thinking more in line with save the engine!! My uncle was a despatch rider/ convoy outrider during the war; the first thing he was taught to do was slid the bike and dismount, thus saving his legs. No, I tell a lie the first thing he was taught was how to swim when he was stationed at Cattrick, this involved being lobbed into the deep end; I suppose this is where the term 'sink or swim' comes from. --- In W650riders@..., "Captain Jake" <jake@...> wrote: The practical nature of crash bars is to reduce the number and

Re: Rear tire width question
Thanks everyone, for all the info. I am a former Harley guy who has recently converted to the cult of cafe racer. About wanting a wider rear tire... I guess old habits die hard. You have a wonderfuly responsive community here. Thanks again, --- In W650riders@..., "Jonhaddock@..." <jonhaddock@...> wrote:
They are not the same size. The rear tyre is 30 mm wider.
There are two issues here. The height issue is to do with
handling, the width issue to do with matching radii. The 120/90 is slightly taller than the 130, which is good for high speed stability and secure handling. The 120 is also not as wide as the 'picked for fashion looks' 130 and so is nearer to the 100 front. The front is also a 90 profile so has a similar curve to the 120/90. The 80's are a shallower side to side radius. Jon
Actually Jon is better at sorting this, as he did post.

----- Original Message ----- From: ed_massey To: W650riders@... Sent: Saturday, June 30, 2007 12:09 PM Subject: [W650riders] Re: Rear tire width question
Thanks for that info Dennis. Stock 130/80 sidewall height = 104mm 100/90 sidewall height = 90mm So with a 14mm sidewall height difference x 2 as there are two sidewalls in the diameter) the rear has 28mm or one inch taller overall sidewall height than the front tire. So the stock
100/90 19 and the stock 130/80 18 fully assembled and inflated are actually the same size. If this is true then why go to a 120/90 rear and upset the balance?
.

I know there are a lot of variables that go in to what a bike on Ebay sells for, but here are some recent results of W650s listed on Ebay
?
2000s:
?
One did not sell as the reserve not met with last bid at $4009.
?
One sold for $2500
?
One listed at $4500 got no bids.
?
Another did not sell as the reserve was not met, with last bid $2999, Buy It Now price was $4000. Seemed pretty clean, under 3k miles.
?
One sold for $4500!!? It only had 800 miles on it.?
?
Some 2001s were sold from between 3800 - 4250
?
One 2001 did not sell as the reserve was not met.? Last bid was $2800.? Only had 11K miles.

Hope that helps.

comfortable. But you know I go through phases so please don't take it that
I will go and buy one tomorrow, I'm likely to change my mind again as
women do!! Haven't even sat one. Are they easy to get hold of?

Re: Exhausts & retro noise
Excellent! If you have time, please ask what size their inner/outer diameter is. The stock headers are double-walled, we need something we can adapt, if necessay with a reducer section of pipe that'll fit in betwen the inner/outer stock pipes, to which we can clamp the new muffler.

That is the same look and sound I want for mine. (My current do sound good, but I want the look.)
I have sent Mikes XS and email and am waiting a reply. They are quick so I should have in a day or so. I will post what they tell me.

Looks like Mikes XS might have a set like the Posh. I don't know what they sound like or baffeling...but it could save some coins and would get to you a lot quicker.

The EMGO 17" reverse megaphones with repackable baffles. (IE removable
baffles.) Scroll down about half way or so on this page to find
them
