Fork rebuilding... 7
I'm posting this on multiple forums, sorry if you've seen it elsewhere... After the "fork oil stink" thread which discussed some interesting things about fork internal parts, I've begun dismantling my forks for a service... can anyone advise regarding the "fork inner pipe" (as the parts book calls it)? I've disassembled things as far as the service manual and other online resources suggest, but there's still some bits at the bottom rattling around on the inside, which aren't shown on any diagrams I can find. They aren't mentioned in any of the written or video tutorials I've seen. I see no obvious way of removing them (no retaining rings, etc). The parts in question are inside the bottom of the main tube, concentric (if you will) to the bushing. That's what's shown in the photos, you can see the approximately 1-inch-wide relieved external groove where the bushing seats: Here's a link to a short video I made showing the bits and their movement: https://youtu.be/Fz8tAywDIWE I was under the impression that these forks were pretty much a universal design; I've seen video tutorials for other bikes which appear to have identical parts... but no mention of these components...Do I just do my best to clean everything with those bits in place and reassemble, or is there something else I should be doing here?

Are you all running standard looking bikes or are there any modified bikes out there? 8
I’m keen to see pics of any modified W650s around the world. By modified I mean brat style, chopped, bobbed or tracker. Mild mods are ok like paint, brakes, seats etc. Bolt on screens and panniers not so. cheers

Bought this a few weeks ago 11
Kia ora. After far too long I finally bought a W650. Will be customising it further over the coming months - although mostly riding it as it is summer. Hoping that this group will help as I hit the inevitable challenge of a lack of mechanical skill combined with a lack of mechanical knowledge. Mark

The sound of silence 12
Loving the bike so far and pretty happy with the modifications it came with. One thing is bugging me though- it is so quiet. I like the look of the original mufflers but the silence is killing me. Anyone recently removed the baffles from their bike?

W650 oil consumption 7
I'm reposting this question hopingto get a greater response. My 2001 W650 used half a quarter of 15w50 in 500 miles this fall. . Normal riding around 50 to 60 mph. Bike has only 8000 miles. Two previous owns rode the W normally....this seems really excessive...comments?

Custom Tank Badges 12
Hey W friends, I recently had some custom tank badges made for my bike, and I needed to make a minimum order, so I have a couple of sets left over. They are epoxy acrylic "domed" stickers, printed on chrome gold background. 85mm diameter. They catch the light beautifully, though its hard to get pics of them properly. If anyone is interested, they are 50 bucks per pair ( plus shipping) just let me know, otherwise ill throw them up on the ol ebay.

Speed wobble at 45mph-ish 9
Hey folks, I have a 2000 W650 and the bike has developed a speed wobble around 35-45mph in 3rd or 4th gear when I let go of the handlebars. I don't usually ride without my hands off the bars but I discovered this a while ago when I loosen my grip. I've since changed tires, rebalanced the front tire, loosened up all the bolts and axle on the front forks to reset the alignment but to no avail. Curious to see if you guys can think of anything that may be causing this? I've attached a video of the wobble slowing down from 50mph to around 45mph. Thanks! -- 2000 W650

Poor idle after slow drop on right side. 17
No visible damage but now no idle. Bike starts normally with choke. But won’t hold idle without choke. right side drop in garage (just lost my balance). Managed to slow the drop by holding handlebars… standing on the left side. Once bike was lower than my hips, the bike hip-tossed me across the floor. This hurt. But besides a bruised ego nothing broken. Gonna have to be more careful… not getting any younger. ive yet to go through the fuel system but thought you folks might have some collective wisdom to share?

Fork oil stink 25
Checking steering head bearings (which are surprisingly good… just cleaned and greased them) and decided to check fork seals and oil. Boy did that old oil stink! removed the dampers … made the ‘handle tool’ out of a 12” long 5/8th bolt (its hex head is 240mm, just right), and using a 5/8th coupling nut, connected another 5/8th bolt (5” this time) with a couple 5/8th nuts to double nut the coupling. Worked fine. the fork- bottom 8mm bolt was pretty stuck but some heat and PB blaster did the trick. One of the fork bolts was missing its copper washer… suggesting a previous owner lost it and failed to replace it with a new one. my question concerns that split plastic washer/seal on the top of the damper. Does it need to be replaced and what is the part number? Both of my old ones look fine, but I didn’t see a part number in the parts manual. I’ve ordered new 8mm bolts as well since one of them is pretty bungee up. V

Fork action & stability 4
I'm not able to take my bike over 75mph because of stability issues. Death wobble is inevitable. Even at lower speeds I can feel the instability with a little back and forth action on the handlebars. Problem was there before a shop rebuilt them after someone hit my bike and bent the forks. The forks are bouncy and not firm. Easy to collapse all the way down when you put weight on them. My bike friends said they shouldnt do that... I have had transmission fluid rather than fork oil in them, but I did the same with my last W and had no issues. Stable up to 100mph Same transmission fluid. Bearings were replaced at the same time as the forks were rebuilt. Also added progressive springs. I've had the problem with BT46 and Road Classic tires. I'm taking them off and putting in Motul 15w fork oil tomorrow as my last resort to see if that helps. I may tighten the steering stem a bit as well but this baffles me. Could the frame be bent or something crazy like that?
