Which could also lower the resale value of the bike. Not just because it has a funky, non-reversable tone, but because if I looked in the exhausts and saw that they had been modified with a hammer, I'd pass on the bike. 'cause I'm doubting the fella measured the airflow before, then after, and jetted accordingly. Now if you had a spare pair of stock mufflers...

sound deepened. Anyone tried this? My Canadian exhaust is one of those
from which the stock baffles cannot be removed (as per the California

I got a reply from MikesXS. They said the originals were very loud,
essential straight throughs. So they had a chamber created inside the
muffler to redirect the air and quiet them. SOOOO looks like, unless
that chamber can be removed, these are not going to be the sound you
are looking for.

I was looking at my stock exahaust and was curious. Could a
welder cut
the cross over off. Weld plates inplace of the crossover holes, and
then remove some of the baffeling from the stock?

I know it would be a lot of effort. I will find out in the next few
days if it can be done and how much. (IE have a friend who does
this.)

Depends on what information you have about it. This is roughly the
procedure, taken from the VMCC handbook who assist members in
registering old machines:

If you do not have the original reg number you can apply for an age
related number. You would need to fill in an application form for a
Statement of Search, which you send to the VMCC with ?6 if you are a
member or ?14 if a non-member. When the VMCC return the Statement of
Search, you take it to the local VLO together with a current MOT,
evidence of identity & your certificate of insurance. They will
probably then arrange an inspection of the machine.

If you are trying to retain the original registration the procedure is
slightly different & involves having the VMCC inspect the machine
rather than the VLO. I'm not sure how necessary the inspection is
since I am sure that the NACC offer a similar service but rely on
documents and photos sent to them, with a rubbing of the frame/engine
number. I think the BSAOC offer a similar service.

I'm not sure what difference there is if the trials bike has built
from bits of various bikes (which is what I am hoping to do). You can
get day-time MOTs. If it is pre-74, you can have a bulb-horn and no
lights so you don't need to worry about adding lights etc if it hasn't
already got them.

Have you found one you're wanting to buy?

Some Serrows are dual start (electric and kickstart). Perhaps we

accomodation so could travel there the day before or something. I
won't be able to manage for a while as my Morini has set back the

A lot
of
Enduro bikes were bought as 'greenlaners'. Green lanes

'Rights of way open to all traffic' which were not

muddy

bikes
are
not designed for such tricky and challenging narrow
paths....But
being
macho

Trail. These bikes are less extreme and less robust.
They have
less
suspension travel, less power and are often more
civilised. You
used to
find
some in every makers range but today in the UK, only
grey

are

They were popular amongst older trail riders ( the ones

Kawasaki
Sherpa and

frankly, the
XR250

Honda is so good and usable it'll cross into both camps.

All off-road bikes are brilliant fun, combining punchy
motors with
incredibly light weight. Both motocross and Enduro bikes
have to
have
superb
handling stability because they are built to win races
on bumpy
rough
ground
and as a consequence, round town or the lanes, a
motocross or
enduro
bike
with road oriented tyres on usually blows 'proper' road
bikes into
the
weeds.

They are incredibly comfy too...really soft seats and
amazingly
good
suspension make for a real armchair riding position.

Very high credibility too......

That might work if the mufflers were the only silencing part, but that huge
tray underneath is part of the silencing. Also, the note of the exhaust is
derived from the shape ( and thickness of steel) in the burgess pipes and
the stock mufflers don't work in the same way. The engine note gets louder,
but in a kind of 'knackered honda twin with cheap magaphones on' kind of
way.

That might work if the mufflers were the only silencing part, but that huge
tray underneath is part of the silencing. Also, the note of the exhaust is
derived from the shape ( and thickness of steel) in the burgess pipes and
the stock mufflers don't work in the same way. The engine note gets louder,
but in a kind of 'knackered honda twin with cheap magaphones on' kind of
way.

I have read here that this method produces sound that some have liked, and some regretted, hard to say what your results may be. It's a one way trip.

An old Triumph expert suggested that I should just sharpen a piece of narrow
rebar, and hammer it through the stock exhaust/baffles bit by bit until the
sound deepened. Anyone tried this? My Canadian exhaust is one of those
from which the stock baffles cannot be removed (as per the California
exhaust diagram in Files). The baffles start well inside the exhaust.

I got a reply from MikesXS. They said the originals were very loud,
essential straight throughs. So they had a chamber created inside the
muffler to redirect the air and quiet them. SOOOO looks like, unless
that chamber can be removed, these are not going to be the sound you
are looking for.

I was looking at my stock exahaust and was curious. Could a welder cut
the cross over off. Weld plates inplace of the crossover holes, and
then remove some of the baffeling from the stock?

I know it would be a lot of effort. I will find out in the next few
days if it can be done and how much. (IE have a friend who does this.)

Re: Couple of newbie questions.

The bike runs very lean as standard at around 3000rpm. Good acceleration from these revs depends on twisting the throttle a bit because there is an accelerator pump which adds the correct amount of 'extra' raw fuel to get the mix correct. Very gentle acceleration may not deliver enough fuel so the bike stays lean. If your bike has done many gentle miles it might be that the plugs are a little tired and are not providing quite the spark they used to. Couple that with a lean mix and you might get a momentary mis-fire as you feed the extra air into the motor.

Fit some new iridium plugs and your problem will almost certainly go away forever. Fit some ordinary plugs and your problem should go away for several thousand miles...

Seems to be under gentle acceleration. Does not happen often, it's abit
like the engine 'snatching' slightly.
