Yaesu FTM-500 integration with Digrig 12
I have an Yaesu FTM-500 that I am trying to get working with a Digirig. I have the 10 pin cable assembly that connect the two units together. I apparently have the receive working as the VARA FM v4.32 modem display shows the typical VU level for receive and goes to zero when I disconnect the cable. PTT appears to be working when keyed. My problem is that I do not get any modulated signal being transmitted when the transmitter is keyed. I only transmit noise. I have tried various combinations of Data Settings in the Yaesu menu without finding the correct combination. I have the latest firmware update installed on FTM-500. Thank for any assistance you may be able to supply. 73, Larry KE7AU -- Larry Driskill KE7AU

Winlink VARA-FM working with AIOC and Baofeng 5
Hello All, Well, I feel kind of foolish posting this, but I got my Winlink/VARA-FM/AIOC/Baofeng combo working, and it was partly due to my ignorance and an unexpected hardware issue. My hardware setup worked to access a local BBS using Outpost and Direwolf, so I was pretty sure that aspect was good, but I could not get Winlink (RMS Express) to send or receive messages. My system would seemingly connect, but then after about 15 seconds, disconnect without doing any message actions. I had been using "Vara FM Radio-only" as the session selection. I had tried "Vara FM Winlink" but could not even get an initial connection, so I thought that wasn't the correct protocol. Subsequently, I discovered that the battery in my Baofeng was basically down to the point where it was not responding to the PTT from the AIOC, so I charged it back up, tried "Vara FM Radio-0nly", but still no joy. I then though I'd try the "Vara FM Winlink" again, since I figured it could have failed because of the PTT issue and - success! I made a good connection, sent and received a couple of messages, and also tried with my Anytone 878 radio. So, that has been my experience, perhaps it may help if someone else is scratching their heads about connection issues. 73, Dave, KJ7WT

Connecting with VARA-FM, but not sending/receiving messages 12
Hello -- I am connecting to a local Winlink RMS via VARA-FM. Although I get a connection, my outboxes messages aren't sent, and I'm not receiving any messages I have coming in. Here are the messages I get when I connect: In WinLink session window: *** Connected to Winlink RMS: K7NWS-10 @ 2025/02/15 21:55:55 Freq: 439.825 BEARS West Tiger Mountain 47.5088N 121.9850W *** Disconnected from Winlink RMS: K7NWS-10 @ 2025/02/15 21:56:02 *** Session: 0.1 min; Avg Throughput: 0 Bytes/min; 1 Min Peak Throughput: 0 Bytes/min In VARA-FM logs: 2025-02-15 21:55:53 Connecting to K7NWS-10... 1/10 2025-02-15 21:55:53 <-UNENCRYPTED LINK 2025-02-15 21:55:55 Connected to K7NWS-10 2025-02-15 21:55:57 <-SN 2025-02-15 21:56:00 <-SN 2025-02-15 21:56:01 QRT Received 2025-02-15 21:56:01 K7NWS-10 disconnected TX: 0 Bytes (Max: 0 bps) RX: 46 Bytes (Max: 566 bps) Session Time: 00:06 Any ideas? I have one message in the outbox and one message that should be landing in my inbox. I'm using a Yaesu FT-991A, FM mode (same thing happens in DATA-FM). I have VARA-FM set to NARROW but also tried WIDE with the same results. Thanks, Dave K7XST

Baofeng/Kenwood/AIOC 10
Hello All, I am expecting to receive an AIOC interface in the next few days, after un successfully trying to use simple audio cables to my Baofeng hand-held. The VOX in the radio "hangs" for quite a while after the TX audio stops, and I'm assuming that the handshake from the RMS station is never heard. I have used Winlink/VARA on HF (IC-7300) with success, and I'd like to get VARA-FM running. Has anyone had good success with the AIOC and the Baofeng radios for Winlink/VARA? Is Direwolf required for this to work? Thanks, and 73, Dave KJ7WT

TYT TD-9000D for VARA FM 17 #VARAFM
I have two TYT TD-9000D low cost Chinese radios and am having trouble getting them to work with VARA FM. I thought I had this working with the Repeater Builder RIB ALINCO 9600 and the DB9 adapter cable, but apparently not. Note that the RIM ALINCO 9600 works flawlessly with the Alinco DR-135. I have set this up on at least five units with no issues. The TYT DB9 adapter cable from Repeater Builder is built correctly pre my continuity checks and the pinout information I have. the TD-9000D will transmit to the gateway and the gateway responds, but VARA and Winlink do not connect. I can see receive audio on the DB9 pin 3 with a scope. Same RIM ALINCO 9600 and computer with Winlink Express and VARA FM that works on the DR-135. Tried both narrow and wide. Is anyone here having success with the TYT TD-900D?

Alinco DR-CS10T as Winlink Gateway radio 10
Hi, I'm looking at the above as the radio for a new Winlink Gateway. I'd use a Digirig Mobile as the interface. Is it capable of 9600 on Vara FM? Any thoughts on this application? Thanks and 73

Winlink VARA FM 3.8.4 on Raspberry Pi4B- TUNE hangs ON - must kill with Task Manager 2 #VARAFM
I am running Windows 10 for Raspberry Pi4B and VARA FM 3.8.4. When I try to TUNE the soundcard ( Signalink USB) the PTT led comes on and the radio triggers but will not release with the CLOSE button. I have to go to Task Manager and kill the process. Is there a version of VARA FM for the ARM64 that I need to run instead of the x64 or x86 versions? I dont know where to find it. Thanks.

Icom -IC320 3
Hello, I am trying to set up mobile Icom IC-320 radio and West Mountain Rigblaster Nomic sound card to work with 2m RMS Winlink and VARA FM. The RMS Express program causes the radio to transmit and there are a sequence of "modem" sounds which are picked up by the 2m Winlink gateway. But there is "no connection" I had a similar experience trying with a Baofeng UV-5R. Has anyone had any success/experience with an IC-320 radio? Thank you George VY1GP

APRSdroid & VARA Modem over Bluetooth 4
I created a poor mans program that allows users to operate VARA modem over bluetooth on a Windows machine. With the program you can then operate VARA with a headless (no screen) Windows computer. No wifi needed!! Some instructions are on my site below! This should make your mobile operations for VARA APRS just that much better and easier! Thanks to KF6NYM for testing!! https://na7q.com/bluetooth-with-aprsdroid-vara-hf/

When starting VARA USB Keyboard wont work, only with TENTEC Jupiter as the radio 4
Hi all, So I tracked down the cause (kinda). Only when I start VARA HF and the modem Sound Card is connected on the OUTPUT side to the Jupiter Sound Card. The INPUT connection does not affect the keyboard. I verified there are only default settings for the Sound Card for INPUT and OUTPUT. The Jupiter sound connects via a Signalink with SLMOD5PD card and SLCAB5PD cable to the 5pin DIN on the radio. A RS232 to USB cable for CAT control. The INPUT sounds appears on the waterfall. When the VARA HF MODEM starts, the keyboard no longer functions. When I change the OUTPUT to any other sound card the keyboard works. Switching it back immediately blocks the keyboard. Notice the radio was never in transmit mode. No RF. Just the sound card interfering with the sound when it is connected via VARA HF. Any ideas? -- 73, Rory Griffin W4RJG

Hello group, I am fairly new to some parts of Vara I have a registered copy under one callsign but I am looking to set up a vhf gateway as there is very little coverage in my area. I wish to use another callsign I own for the gateway. Do I need to purchase another license or can. Not a problem either way Ron VA7HZ

Radio Audio in Computer Speakers 7
I'm using a Kenwood TS-480SAT and a Signalink USB to run Winlink. I have the paid version of VARA HF. I am running Windows 11 on a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 laptop. I don't use WInlink that often, so I thought I would check it out. I could receive signals, but the PTT on the Signalink would not illuminate, so no RF transmit from the radio. Eventually I got that fixed, and I can send and receive e-mail via Winlink. The issue is that audio from the radio is going to the speakers on my laptop. I get audio on the radio AND the computer speakers, simultaneously. This is not a show stopper, but it is something different that before. Here is the information from Signalink to solve the problem: "TIP: If the comms program is properly configured to use the SignaLink's USB Audio Codec sound card for both transmit and receive, but the transmit audio is heard in your computer speakers, then you can usually fix this by restarting the comms program. If this doesn't work, then open the comms program's sound card setup and select a different sound card for output. Click OK or Save (as applicable) to save the settings, then re-open the program's sound card setup again and set it back to USB Audio Codec. This should resolve the issue." I tried the above fix, but the issue remains. Has anyone else encountered this issue and instituted a successful fix? Thanks, John

VARA? Disconnects USB Keyboard 10
Hi all, Well possibly. I start RMS Trimode connected to a TenTec Jupiter with VARA HF. After that my USB keyboard won't work. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Possibly related but Norton 360 also want approval for VARA to work on the PC. This does not happen when I run Winlink Express VARA HF or VARA HF P2P connected to an ic7100. Nor RMS Trimode on an ic718 with VARA HF. -- 73, Rory Griffin W4RJG

Winlink connect failure 3
Hello, I am sorry if this is not the right group but maybe some who know VARA protocol could give me a hint please? I am connecting to a Winlink RMS using VARA using our radio club callsign, registered about a week or two ago. What I can see in the panel is the first goes my sent ACK (probably start frame), then I can hear the other station responding, next from me is sent DATA packet, and then I can see repeated REQ being sent indicated in the panel (in red color) and there is no response from the RMS, although just a few seconds before it reacted to my sent ACK immediately and signal was loud and clear. Then I switch Winlink Express to another callsign, one I have been using a year or two, and call the same RMS on the same frequency using the same equipment. Connect happens instantly and the session is done perfectly in a matter of seconds (no mail to send or receive). Is it possible to see some VARA log or diagnostics to understand what happened? Jindra

VARA.exe in Linux on restricted machine (16 GB eMMC) 3
Hello, recently I purchased and reflashed Lenovo N23, 4GB RAM, 16 GB flash. Running JS8Call to my complete satisfaction, using QDX and/or QMX transceiver (both have built-in USB CDC's for serial and sound interface). The chromebook runs from full charge at least 9 hours, maybe more. With QMX, QDX except battery there are no extra boxes or parts to take in my backpack, such as digirig etc. I tried to install VARA, because it's a standard in one of emcomm groups I participate in, but no success. The reason is that VARA is available as Win32 app only and the necessary libraries don't fit into the 16 GB disk. Were it 32 GB or were VARA also a x64 app everything would be fine. I tried to convince the author, EA5HVK, to make a 64 bit build alongside the 32 bit version but he seems to be reluctant to accept any proposals. I wonder what will he do after 32-bit layer disappears from Windows (after 2025). I just received a used Dell Chromebook 11 3180 with 32 GB flash, reflashed it after some struggle and so far everything seems to work. I have not yet started installing the VARA stuff, but since identical setup on a Linux machine with normal-size hard disk shows about 27 GB used disk space, this would also be running at the edge. With a 32 GB eMMC the real disk space available for the system disk and data is about 27-28 GB. Would you know of another solution as alternative to hunting 32 gig chromebook in the 2nd hand market? "Install Windows to avoid headache" variant has already been taken by Jose (EA5HVK) but he doesn't know that due to various Windows quirks and unsolicited updates our radio club 24/7 JS8 is out of service every couple of days ;-) 73 Jindra OK4RM

VARA (HF) on Linux & Wine not passing correct information
I have previously used VARA and VarAC on Lubuntu 24.04 LTS without any issues. It was stable and working correctly. However, in the past week there has been a version upgrade of Wine 9.x to Wine 10.0, and subsequently the values being passed on by VARA is not being formatted correctly (by Wine). The values for VU (audio level), SNR, and AFC are not being formatted correctly. Using a special version of VARA - created by its developer, Jose - to verify the format of the parameter values, has confirmed that there is a formatting-error by Wine. The above image shows the test values (highlighted in green squares) are different to what is reported under the meters (highlighted by the red squares). Has anyone else encountered this error since upgrading to Wine Version 10 ?

Autostart VARA, Flrig and hamlib on Raspberry Pi 4 7
I am in the planning stages of adding VARA to an up and running LinBPQ site that is using Direwolf for VHF. Our intention is to use a CAT controlled HF radio that has yet to be acquired for an RMS port. On my test system at home, I have been successful with LinBPQ, VARA, Flrig, hamlib and of course Wine on a Pi 4B. What I am looking for is a method to autostart VARA, Flrig and hamlib. LinBPQ and Direwolf are autostarting with "systemd" scripts. Dave WB9TEN

VARA FM over KISS TNC? 4
Greetings, Recently a handheld radios known as VERO VR-N76 (with two siblings sold as BTECH UV Pro and Radiooddity GA-5WB) received a firmware upgade, which made a KISS TNC available over Bluetooth to user applications. This move makes all transformer / optoisolator coupled interfaces redundant. But the application needs to be Bluetooth / KISS protocol capable. It seems to me that VARA FM does not support such interface. If I am wrong, would somebody please guide me towards proper settings for VARA CHAT, Winlink / VARA etc. Best regards, Marek SP5ISZ

40M VARA APRS Rocks! (7.083.50 USB) 44
VARA APRS on 40 meters, specifically operating on 7.083.50 USB, has proven to be an outstanding mode for digital communication, offering unmatched coverage and reliability since our establishment just over a year ago. While we have tested other bands such as 30 meters and 20 meters, none have provided anywhere near the same consistent performance as 40 meters. The combination of VARA's efficiency and the favorable propagation characteristics of 40 meters ensures exceptional coverage and reliability over a wide area. This past year of experimentation and operation has firmly established 40 meters as the backbone of our network on HF in the PNW and outlying areas.

USB2RIG - Vara FM 4
Anyone have experience/suggestions for using a USB2RIG ? Fellow club member has obtained one ; the correct mic and spkr options come up for the sound card settings but having difficulty bringing up a comport for it. Has checked device manager but no new comport showing up. Is this a driver issue or maybe something else with this unit ?
