Unimat motor 12
I recently acquired a Unimat SL Model DB 200. Motor was a little noisy, so I disassembled it, cleaned it up and put it back together. It runs well, but in CCW rotation. I believe it should be clockwise. I reversed the connections to the brushes, but it still runs CCW. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Edelstaal cutoff or slotting tool and Komet toolholder 25
Does anyone have some input on the erstwhile Edelstaal "cutting tool/slotting tool"? I found it in the Campbell Tools Co catalog for March 1983, entitled "Lathe accessories & Attachments" which is also in the files section (here), also see screen shot below. I would think that I have something similar, not complete - just a number of cutoff "knives" and a tool holder, this one coming from Komet. The knives measure circa 108 x 9,5 x 2,7mm, with the profile not square but set at an 80 degrees angle along the long side. The Komet tool holder has the same angle, so that the knife can be securely held in the toolholder. But there is nothing to mount this tool holder on the cross slide. How was this done - knowing that the knife set in the tool holder is not at the same height as the center. So I guess some additional mounting device would be needed. Does anyone have experience with these tool holders?

Emco-Lux adjustable tool post/adjustable lantern post 6
Does anyone have experience with the "Emco-Lux Adjustable Toolpost" that was advertised in the Campbell Tools Co catalog for March 1983, entitled "Lathe Accessories and Attachments" (see here and screen shot below)? Last September, one of these was for sale on Ebay and Mr. Pete has one video (#945) explaining how he went about adapting an incomplete such tool post. Apparently, this "Emco-Lux" toolpost has never been very common - I never saw one thus far, and references are isolated - like this one .

Urethane Motor Belts
I just finished making 2 urethane belts for my Unimat 24 volt DC motors. It was easier than I had expected. I had a spool of urethane round belting material so I gave it a try! Reversible Motor Question
Has anyone had a chuck come unthreaded? I had thought these would be non-reversible with the threads on the headstock and tailstock being right hand so normal rotation tightens them, reverse would loosen. Maybe the change from fwd to rev is slow enough with the DC motor.

New or pre-used 4
I'm looking to restore my SL, but need a motor. PJToolmakers comes up top in a web search for new motors, but everything on their site shows out of stock, the same as three years ago when I emailed to go on their waiting list. No reply to contact form, can't find a phone no or business address. Is PJT the only UK source for new motors? Are they UK? There are motors on eBay, but what am I getting into with pre-used?! Observations welcome. John

Morse Taper #0 spindle and tailstock for Unimat 3
Recently I came across LatheCity.com which offers MT0 tail and headstock spindles for Unimat SL. They look great, but the collar on the headstock is a separate part held by set screws. This is a bit concerning, considering that it's preloaded and is a reference surface. Have anybody tried to use those products? Any thoughts? Have anybody tried to bore MT0 into the factory spindle? Dimension wise it should fit just fine.

Centering tailstock? 15
Hi, I have a Unimat 4 that I have not used that much, yet... I tried to drill a small hole but discovered that the center-drill did not center in the rod I tried to hollow... I found that the tailstock does not seem to center correctly. Any ideas how I can align the tailstock? What I concluded so far is that it will likely require physical removal of material somewhere and I dont want to do this the wrong way... Hints and tips around this is highly appreciated. Regards, Anders in Sweden

ER32 Collet Chuck 13
I have a full set of ER32 collets and a collet nut. I want to use them on my DB200 Unimat in lathe mode. The only lathe I have at this time is my Unimat. As I see it my best option is to single point thread a new Unimat spindle nose to fit the ER32 collet nut I have. I have 6 Unimat spindles So that should be no problem. Does anyone in the group have any suggestions that might be better than what I have proposed? ER32 Collet Chuck 2
I have just bought a piece of 1-3/4¡± diameter 303 Stainless round stock to make an ER32 collet chuck to fit my DB200 Unimat. I have an ER32 collet nut and a full set of 25 ER32 Collets from a 7x16 lathe I owned at one one time and this will work well for my Unimat. I intend to use the Unimat itself to machine up the tooling. I will post pictures as it progresses. U3 - Another threading option 4
(PLEASE NOTE: The design of the plate is only possible because I use 9mm (3/8¡± approx) risers under both ends of the lathe. I use a (not-guaranteed-flat) plywood base and this avoids the middle support grounding on the ply and potentially bending the bed. It¡¯s a simple enough mod to make on most installations, Or you could re-design the plate.) I tried making the copy of the geared Unimat 3 threading option (there are plans in the Files section) but I had issues with the meshing and found that the gears slipped. Maybe they simply weren¡¯t accurate enough (I had them 3D printed by a commercial company). I thought that there must be other ways to drive the spindle and leadscrew in conjunction, and came up with this: As you can see, it uses T5 x 10mm pulley wheels, and a double-sided belt. The three smaller pulley wheels are idlers; the slots in the plate allow adjustment to take up the slack in the belt. I¡¯ve used two 26 tooth wheels here for the ¡®drive¡¯ and ¡®driven¡¯ wheels, as I had them to hand. Using this system it is easy to create reverse threads by simply taking the belt around the outside of the cog driving the main leadscrew. Here¡¯s a description of the components. I don¡¯t do CAD drawings (I prefer paper and pencil!) but I¡¯ll scan a drawing of the 4mm mild steel plate layout and include it at the end of this document. - Two 26 tooth (or whatever other combination - see below) T5 pulley wheels, tapped M14 x 1. Remember to also bore some clearance (4mm or so deep) to accommodate the non-threaded portion of the spindle end. - Two spacers to get the plate away from the headstock. I made these from alumininium, 24mm diameter x 8.5mm or so thick. Two M6 x 20mm bolts. - Three T5 pulley wheels as ¡®idlers¡¯. I used 12 teeth pulleys. Three M6 x 40mm bolts, six M6 nuts, and enough M6 washers to space the pulleys appropriately to align the belt. - Brass leadscrew shaft. I made this from some 16mm round bar, and it ended up 67mm long overall. More details as this is the only slightly complex item! The end to take the T5 pulley is threaded M14 x 1. This section is about 21mm long, and is also threaded internally M6 to take a short (9mm or so) securing bolt with washer. The section with flats (the original diameter) is 7mm long. The section that fits in the hole in the plate is just under 4mm long. The M12 threaded section is 15mm long. The slot to fit onto the flat of the leadscrew is 11mm long. - I was planning to use an M12 locknut (Nyloc) to secure the leadscrew shaft but this proved to be too large. As did a normal M12 nut - I faced it down to 8mm thick clear the bed of the lathe. Here¡¯s a side view of the general arrangement. As you can see there¡¯s not much clearance in places. Note the use of washers to get the idler pulleys aligned. The next photo shows how the plate mounts onto the headstock, with the spacers. A somewhat shaky mount of the fiber tip pen in the ¡®swiss cheese¡¯ holder, but all looks good! The double sided belts can be a bit hard to find. I¡¯m in the UK and I got them from Totally Belts (totallybelts.com - who are Orbic Bearings Ltd in Croydon). They are described as 'Optibelt ALPHA Power High Performance Polyurethane Double-Sided Timing Belts'. I bought two sizes - a DT5 515 and a DT5 410 (their product codes TB00041364 and TB00041404 respectively). As we are effectively using gears we can alter the ratios to get other thread pitches. The design allows a fairly large range of sizes (and one or two of the idler wheels could always be removed) but it is probably wise to stay fairly close to the sum of the drive wheels - 2 x 26 = 52. Some combinations I came up with, given the U3 leadscrew pitch of 1mm: 18:36 = 0.5mm, 18:30 = 0.6mm, 21:30 = 0.7mm, 21:28 = 0.75mm, 24:30 = 0.8mm, 26:26 = 1.0mm, 30:24 = 1.25mm, 30:20 = 1.5mm (could somebody check these are correct please? Thanks!) Here is a scan of the template for the plate, and a ruler for scale. I'll add a PDF of all this into the Files section. Enjoy!
