ER32 Collet Chuck
I have a full set of ER32 collets and a collet nut. I want to use them on my DB200 Unimat in lathe mode. The only lathe I have at this time is my Unimat.
As I see it my best option is to single point thread a new Unimat spindle nose to fit the ER32 collet nut I have. I have 6 Unimat spindles So that should be no problem.
Does anyone in the group have any suggestions that might be better than what I have proposed?

Hello Dick, you will be familiar with Dick Collinge's 2019 PDF 'Make an ER-16 Collet Holder for your Unimat'?
?
Great instructions, you would just have to scale up appropriately to the correct dimensions for ER32.?
?
This morning (I'm in the UK) when I looked it was in a folder called 'Collet chuck' in 'Files' but it doesn't seem to be there now... I had saved it to my desktop machine previously, so (just in case it has gone missing!) here is a copy, and also a REGO-FIX pdf with the various holder dimensions (I have an ER-16 mini-nut though that has an M19 x 1 thread, so the nuts can differ!).
?
Cheers,

开云体育Hi Dick: I cut off a CAT40/ER32 holder and welded in a bushing for M12x1: /g/Unimat/photo/195716/2246540?p=Name%2C%2Cer32%2C20%2C1%2C0%2C0 With a little fine tuning it works fine. I really like it for wood since its range is large and it doesn't leave jaw marks. Also it can
hold any size milling cutter. Carl. On 9/21/2024 9:43 PM, OldToolmaker via

Carl, I keep vacillating between ER32 and ER16. I have all the ER32 collets.
Did you have any problems finding enough “RealEstate” or room to fit the ER32 in?

开云体育Hello Dick: No, it fits fine. Really it isn't any larger in diameter that the 3 jaw chuck, it just sticks out farther. In my mind
the only advantage to the ER16 is you can buy the chuck ready
made. Carl. On 9/22/2024 10:27 PM, OldToolmaker via

Hello Carl,
I found I have an M12x1 tap in great shape. So now I can make my own ER32 adapter to fit the ER nut I have.
It pays scrounge in my tool chest. You never know what I can come with to solve my dilemma. This is going to work out just fine.
Thanks for your help!

If it's any help M40 × 1.5 is a standard metric conduit thread. Not so common yet as industry still has a long legacy of Pg threads, but you might be able to find a die that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
?
And when you start the recess shown as 13.0 diameter should be a very tight tolerance 12.00 mm. I found a slightly worn 12 mm reamer which cut 11.995 mm, gave a really snug fit on the nose. I also made my collet holders (not ER) in hard brass. Easy to machine and good enough for light use. |

ER16 collets are cheaper than ER 32, and ER16 go up to 10 mm, which matches the hole through the headstock. I found little need for anything bigger, although I did get an ER25 set for my U3 just because they were available and I could afford them. However my three jaw chuck for the U3 runs very true - 0.05 mm runout - so the collets are a bit redundant. |
The ER16 holder that I’m making at the moment (with M19 x 1 ‘mini nut’) will allow the slide to go right under it, all the way to the headstock, on the U3. This allows you to (for instance) cut angles facing towards the tailstock using the taper slide. Hard to do with a small component using a 3 or 4 jaw.
?
I guess a ‘standard’ ER16 holder would be the same, but I don’t know abour an ER32, or indeed the clearances on the earlier lathes.

Keith,
You make a valid point about the usefulness of ER32 collets on the Unimat DB200 given the fact that the hole through the headstock is only 10MM.
It just happens that I have a full set of ER collets from a lathe I owned a while back. I may be better served if I sell the set of ER32 collets I have and buy a set of ER16 to suit the Unimat DB200 I have.

Thank you, Peter!
it is a great Write Up!
That is exactly what I am planning to do!
I am going to make an ER32 collet chuck to fit my Unimat as I have a full set of ER32 collets.
