Letting mine go this summer
5
I have three boats now, the wife says that's one too many, and need to let my '74 Sunfish go to a good home in Central Illinois this spring. The boat was around our lake for the Sunfish World Championships back in the 70's but fell into neglect and just barely escaped the burn pile when I found it at Habitat for Humanity and took it on as a therapy project. I did some intensive restoration to the hull, replaced missing parts, and I think she looks pretty keen with red interior and deck stripe. The restoration is all done but for re-attaching one metal rub strip around the portside-aft, which I'll get to when the weather warms up again. I don't want her parted out; I had a transformative experience sharing and sailing this boat with my adolescent son, I'm looking for a parent and child who want to use this boat to get closer while sharing the fun of learning to sail, so for a buyer like that, the price will be lowered. I'll re-post with pictures and price later as we get closer to springtime. Springfield area in central Illinois.

Minifish

Yes, the rig is a bit high. Attach the halyard higher on the gaff (upper spar). Also, slide your boom about 4" forward on the gooseneck. I don't think Minifish have a hiking strap, but hook your feet under the cockpit edge and lean out! Good luck. Sincerely, Gail ~~~~/)~~~/)~~~~~/)~~/)~~~~/)~~~~/)~~~ Gail M. Daggerboard leak
5
#daggerboard
Newbie here. Have been running an old AMF SF for five years or so, all well. After sailing a bit this spring, brought in the boat and it was really heavy. Heard sloshing. Okay have a leak. Did a visual inspection and found a problem on the stern end of the daggerboard slot down at the hull. Some cracking of the fiberglass around the opening and I can stick my pinky in a gap in the wood at the back of the slot. No inspection ports, so I'm going to have to add some to dry it out, right? Have been reading all the #daggerboard topics and getting smarter (I hope), but will it be possible to repair the hole from the outside, without opening the boat? Any other suggestions/pointers? Thanks so much. Jack

Free hulls!!! Will deliver locally!!!
18
Hi all, I have three hulls of various ages. All of them are fiberglass. One of them is sworn to be from 1959. The guy that gave it to me swears he sailed it on a lake in central Massachusetts in 1959 as he moved to Cape Cod in spring 1960. This is strange as I don’t think they made fiberglass hulls till 1960. Could it be one of the early prototype gifts of the Alcort guys gave to friends? The others are in decent shape but need attention. Unfortunately I will have to cut these up and take them to the dump unless I can give them away. Contact me for more detailed photos if you’re interested. Otherwise it’s off to Sunfish heaven for these poor souls. I am also considering selling a 1969 in as near mint condition as it could be. I don’t need it as I have recently purchased a 2002 that suits my age better. I don’t want to part with it but it should be out on the water not in my back yard Cheers, Bob (774)222-3888

Thinking about Selling 2 Boats, Central NC
I'm thinking about selling out of my two Sunfish in central North Carolina. I'm finding that I'm just not using them as much as I thought I would, and doubt it is going to change soon enough. Hull 1: 1970s, original gelcoat white on the bottom, red on the top. Ready to sail. Has harken pulley and one-way cleat. Very clean boat. Hull 2: 1970s, also original gelcoat, all white but needs a good cleaning. Currently the aluminum and splash guard are removed to facilitate cleaning, but all parts are present and accounted for, including another harken pulley and cleat, and new rivets to install the trim pieces. Very nice, dry hull. Sail 1: Intensity red/white/blue sail with window, new halyard and sheet. One trip to the lake. Sail 2: Class-legal tequila sunrise, still folded and ready to install. New halyard and sheet. Two very nice glossy wooden dagger boards, rudders, and tillers, refinished with many coats of spar varnish and stored in protective bags. Tiller extensions, one aluminum and one carbon. Two blue covers, one for the top of a boat and one for the bottom, brand new. One boat is currently sitting on a like-new titled steel trailer. My next step is/was to build a rack on top of the trailer for the second boat, but I haven't done that yet. The plan was to have the top boat upside down, hence the two covers. As of now though, only one boat will go on the trailer. Other parts in the pile: 8" PVC tube with aluminum ends, one of which has a door, for storing the sails. One fits well, two are a tight fit. Two sail bags that hold the sail and booms- one new and one old Dolly that goes in the dagger board, upgraded to no-flat tires. There is more I'm sure, but that covers the big stuff. Looking for $1500 for the whole set. Not looking to separate it, and not wanting to sell it for any less right now. Please reach out if you'd like any pictures or to come visit! Thanks Jared 828-308-1543

Leak at traveler - minifish
37
Hi folks, a friend let me borrow his old Minifish so I can learn to sail. It is very very leaky. Two places I know leak badly are where I first drained it - where the traveler rope goes through the edge of the boat. It looks like the rope is intended to go through a hole in the curled deck seam. But apparently those holes don’t go only through the curled edge but allow water into the hull. Is this worth repairing? this is not the only leak. But appears the most difficult to repair, so far. my friend suggests using Flexseal on all leaks. I machine this will ruin any surface. I’d like to return the boat in better shape than I borrowed it. thanks for help and advice.

Tiller Extensions
? For anyone who would like to explore more about tiller extensions Small Boats Magazine has an article this month. Randy Ober Tiller Extensions An important element of boat trim To get the best boat trim in a small sailing skiff, you shouldn’t be planted in the stern next to the tiller. Ben Fuller offers some easily made extensions that let you get your weight forward. Continue Reading "When does he ever think? If he were to sell his brain, he could claim it had never been used. Ratchet block
29
Good morning. I have a sunfish that only has a hook. I want to upgrade it. I see Harken has a ratchamatic. Has anyone used this model. I tried to call a couple of places yesterday (Including Sunfish Direct) to get prices and info but no one answers. If any one has suggestions on ratchetblocks, other parts, or where to purchase, etc. It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Dennis Ritchie

Ratchet block and tiller extension
Unlike larger sailboats, where the goal is often to proceed on a course for an extended length of time, Sunfish are usually sailed with more frequent heading changes. Even when sailing a straight course Sunfish require frequent main sheet adjustments to sail most efficiently. That's why I prefer the ratchet block which makes it easy to add and ease sheet tension as necessary and a tiller extension with a universal joint. On those very rare occasions, when I need both hands for something other than boat control, I find it easy to put a slip knot in the sheet at the block and lay the hiking stick on the deck so I can sit on it to hold course. I can get my sandwich out of the cuddy and unwrapped, grab the sheet, and hold sandwich and hiking stick in my aft hand and enjoy my lunch. Other than that, to me the joy of Sunfish sailing is the constant tweaking of mainsheet and rudder to get the absolute best performance from the boat in the wind that nature provides. I can't recall a time, when I actually got all that the boat was capable of, but the fun is in the trying.

Where to find a bailer in stock?
16
#bailer
I built a Sunfish clone and sail 1-2 times a weekend and would really like to add an auto bailer so as to not have to bail anytime I get hit by bigger waves or get hit by wakes from ski boats. I ordered a "Sunfish, Auto Bailer (13/16 Inch), 91026" back in April from Sunfish Direct, but they are struggling to get any supplies from the manufacturer and I am still waiting. Other sites do not seem to have any stock either. They said: "Unfortunately, the bailers and their parts have been on back order since last year, we do have some bailer housings available for purchase but that is it. Previously, the manufacturer (Laser Performance) had given us a delivery date at the end of May. However, that has now changed to mid-July" Does anyone know where I can get one or does anyone on this group have one they are willing to sell me?
