Clark, I just noticed the link to your Owners Manual book. Ordered it from Amazon, will get it later this week. I'm gonna need to learn how to dry out my waterlogged Sunfish. Thanks for all you do!

The link from Essentra looks promising; I'll let everyone know how it worked out when mine arrives. Thanks for the tip!

Six bucks for the Essentra plug... and 15 bucks to ship... ouch. ?But better than the cost of a replacement OEM brass one.

I bought a '74 Minifish with a steel bailer that is seized (both collar and the bailer cap) . Doused it with PB Blaster over the course of two weeks. Still won't budge.
I'd grind it off with a Dremel wheel, but on a Minifish the bailer is sunken into a recess which doesn't give much clearance along the sides.
Any advice on removal/replacement? For now my functional bailer is a 1/2 gallon milk jug cut in half.?

Rolan; regarding the minifish bailer; why about using a router and a spiral-cut (AKA "zip") bit to get a slit cut in the collar? Might need to lay down some py to add support but you'd have precise depth control and a narrow cut without damaging the fiberglass. A Dremel can also be used like this; there are add-on attachments that create a cone-like platform to keep the Dremel vertically aligned by hand.

I believe all you need to cut is the nut in two places, remove it and then the entire part will fall out of the hole. The trick is not to cut the cockpit floor so go slow and steady.

Hi Mark and all,

I recently bought a 1971 sunfish with the original brass bailer. It does not work very well. Water gets drained very slowly when doing at least 4 or 5 knots, but as soon as I tack or decelerate, water rushes back in.

Is that the way it is supposed to be? I don't think there is a ball inside, maybe is missing. Can I use the ball of a newer plastic bailer? How much should the cap be open (a few turns or all the way out, maybe)?

Sorry for asking so many basic questions, but reading that you guys are knowledgeable about the bailer, I wanted to piggieback on the discussion

Regards,
Josh

I fought this fight recently on a Sunfish.

For the bailer cap, I was able to use a wrench to get it off.

For the stuck stuck collar I got a socket and breaker bar, and couldn't budge it.? I eventually tried out my electric harbor freight impact wrench, which quickly go it off.
