I built a Sunfish clone and sail 1-2 times a weekend and would really like? to add an auto bailer so as to not have to bail anytime I get hit by bigger waves or get hit by wakes from ski boats.
I ordered a "Sunfish, Auto Bailer (13/16 Inch), 91026" back in April from Sunfish Direct, but they are struggling to get any supplies from the manufacturer and I am still waiting. Other sites do not seem to have any stock either. They said: "Unfortunately, the bailers and their parts have been on back order since last year, we do have some bailer housings available for purchase but that is it. Previously, the manufacturer (Laser Performance) had given us a delivery date at the end of May. ?However, that has now changed to mid-July"
Does anyone know where I can get one or does anyone on this group have one they are willing to sell me?

I ordered one and it was on backorder too. Eventually it came in about a year aftet. But they do come.

Thanks all that contacted me, but I have one being mailed tomorrow.
Supplier did say they were not expecting any before the end of Aug from the manufacturer.
So 4 months and no auto bailer, then less than one day on this group and I was able to find one.? Great community.?

Can anyone tell me the size and threading of the brass screw top plug for the Sunfish bailer? ? Or the aftermarket plastic replacement?I'm trying to temporarily substitute something while waiting for a real to get shipped to me.
|
Go to Home Depot standard pipe thread size pvc plug. I wasn’t to say 1 or 1-1/4.

I can't bring the bailer to the store with me so i need to now exactly, anyone?

Buy one of each size, then return the one that does not fit. They are cheap.

Yeah, that's not efficient. ?I did that tonight, bought 4 pieces that I thought might work, added up to an hour's time and almost twenty bucks and only the $1.19 rubber cork worked. But I want better than a rubber cork. Surely, some Sunfish owner out there knows the size and threads per inch for the brass cap or the plastic one with the flip-top?

Hi Mark, What year is your SF ?? The difference is mainly in the length of the center threaded part that comes up from the hulls bottom. The two sizes have to do with the thickness between the outer and enter hull (cockpit) I have had good luck by simply reducing that length.. (cutting off what isn't needed to secure the interior cap to the hull). Naturally, a clean cut, when needed, should be attempted. For reasons that I don't quite understand, these bailers have become difficult for dealers to keep in stock. I hope this helps mate.

I think what he is asking for is on an old metal bailer what the diameter is of the cap. Since it is different than the newer plastic ones. Dealers aren’t the issue laser performance is the issue can’t get parts to dealers.?

It's a 1972 or 74 with an a metal bailer that used to have a brass screw-in plug in the footwell. ?I'm finding there is no standard plastic plumbing connectors at my hardware store that fit the thread or the diameter of the original. ?So i'm hearing it is one inch diameter by 16 threads per inch.
I have a new plan. ? I have some casting silicone putty and resin, a small kit usually for casting jewelry. I'll try to make a mold of the threaded tube in the flexible silicone, then cast a positive in resin. ?If the resin fits, I'll cast it again using thinned 2-part JB Weld, which is pretty darned tough. ?And i'll still have it before the real thing arrives from the dealership, darn it.

Okay, the new plug for the old bailer came from Essentra today and it fits perfectly. Part number FP120B, was less than twenty bucks ?with the shipping, though shipping was much more than the part cost. ?It got here in three days. The edges are a little sharp if you sail barefoot; nothing that can't be fixed with a few passes with some sandpaper. It can be finger-tightened, wrenched, or turned with a screwdriver-type blade. ?It's plastic, so you can drill or melt a hole sideways thru the threaded part, unscrew it a few turns, and let the bailer do its thing underway, without having to completely remove it. ?The bright red color means you are less likely to lose it. You'll add an o-ring from the local hardware store, perhaps.
Thanks for the tip on this plug: very Corinthian of you!
