If the Horseshoe lake you are refering to is the one near Granite City Illinois. I hear that it's
just too shallow and full of stumps for sailing. I am interested in sailing the Mississippi at Alton Pool but I'm concerned about the current. Shawn __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Win a $20,000 Career Makeover at Yahoo! HotJobs |

Ha, ha, ha, LOL I grew up in that region. Up State near Chicago, but I've sailed Creve Coeur Lake and Carlyle Lake many years ago. To keep the daggerboard held firmly, glue a couple of carpet strips in the front and rear of the trunk it slides into. I cut two 2" wide strips from a $10 fuzzy, door mat that has a dense rubber backing. Trimmed them to line about 2/3 of the height of the trunk... contact cemented them in place... works great. Capsizing isn't a big deal and is one of the first things a good sailing class would teach you. You gotta know how to get out of trouble before you get into it. Imagine a big flag on a jet ski and you've got it. Have fun, Wayne -----Original Message----- |

I am a 31 year old 225 lb. man, I can handle it right? ;-) Thanks for the info about using the daggerboard for leverage. I just need to get something to keep it from getting away. It has the retaining clips but they don't hold it in very well. I have seen "retaining straps" in the shop at the marina. I also need to replace my bailer. Those things can be done soon. 85 pound kid can right a Sunfish alone. Adults have no problem. I don't know where you're sailing, but as soon as the water is 60 degrees, get on with it. If you can start close to shore by simply tipping the boat over while you're standing on the bottom (deep enough), push on the tip of the daggerboard to learn the forces involved. Then go out on the water, far enough from shore that you can't stick the mast in the bottom, and tip it over on purpose (wearing a life jacket of course). If you're a smaller adult you might have to pull on the end of the board and put your feet against the hull for leverage, but most adults can just pull on the board and the boat pops up. Kids do it all the time for fun and play ... When I flip I usually get mad, but that's because I'm racing and it lets competitors get by! When I was a kid it was great because it was refreshing on hot days ... You'll get there! Sincerely, Gail ~~~/)~~~~/)~~~/)~~~~~/)~~~~~~/)~~ Gail M. The hiking strap will help you keep it flat while going up wind and that's

what you want to be able to do. If you can hook your ankles/feet in and lean out with better leverage you won't get too far. Of course, once you can stand the water, it's time to capsize and right it anyway so you know what to expect. Capsizing is not a bad thing, it's part of sailing, and once you get through it you learn it's not a big deal. Playing the line can become a game and part of the challenge. The standard Sunfish rig has less power and might be better for learning. The racing daggerboard is more aerodynamic and will give better forward drive, particularly with the high aspect ratio rig. It takes a little more hiking out effort to keep the boat flat, though. Maybe sometime you can "drag race" the standard Sunfish as I've always wanted to know if the speeds come out comparable or not! SHAWN LANKFORD
Wayne,
WOW, Thanks for the quick response and for the wealth of information!!! I'll check out that AMF/Alcort link later today too! I have sailed the lateen rig sunfish a few times and it appears that the hulls are the same so the rigging should cross over without much trouble. I may look for a nice used boom/mast/sail set later this summer. I think I will get to know my boat for the time and I actually enjoy the challenge of sailing with the slightly more "advanced" rigging. Thanks again for the detailed information. I hope to see postings from another Super 'Fish owner from time to time. Wishing you fair winds and following seas, Shawn __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I'm glad you find the information in our files helpful. Sailing enjoyment, however you define it, is the motivation behind the organization of this group. The repository of articles, photos, and diagrams we are compiling here is intended to help Sunfish and similar boat sailors keep their boats on the water. I like to think of it as a library with an open discussion circle as opposed to a grocery store bulletin board. There have been a couple of inquiries in the group about Super Sunfish from time to time. Based on that I'd venture a guess of two or three other owners somewhere in the group. Maybe one will surface in reply to your questions. From what I have read the Super Fish was designed to be a bit more of a performance boat than the standard Sunfish with its lateen rig. The flexible mast and mid-boom sheeting is intended to allow for sail shape adjustments that the lateen rig does not. This was a way to give aspiring racers an economical entry level boat where they could learn sail handling techniques that would directly apply to Olympic Class racers. I've heard rumors that the John Black Lee sail design for the Super Sunfish was the inspiration for the Laser, but then I've also heard the Laser was modeled after the Ron Holder, Holder-12 so who knows. It's no surprise, though, that your rig has got a little "get-up-and-go". Sort of like driving an Audi A6 vs. a VW Jetta. So, I believe your sail is a performance sail given the design intentions. I am unaware of any color options. Parts for that rig are very rare these days so I wouldn't think you'd run across a variety to choose from in the used equipment market. However, here's a place you might inquire: This outfit is centered around buying and selling parts for the out-of-production AMF/Alcort boats. You might also be able to swap your high aspect ratio sail rig for the standard lateen setup if you wanted to learn with something a little tamer, but don't quote me on that. I've never seen the two side-by-side to compare the details of interchangeability. Wayne -----Original Message----- |
Re: Super Sunfish Group?
SHAWN LANKFORD
I don't really need a new sail. I am fortunate that mine is in great shape. I was just wondering
if there were any other colors available and/or if mine was a "racing" sail or not. It seems to gather any passing breeze and shoot right out of the cove. It's almost too much sail sometimes considering my novice sailing experience. I was amazed to find the Super 'Fish information posted by your group. The rigging guide will be a big help! Could you venture a guess as to how many Super 'Fish owners are in this group? Thanks Shawn __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Photos: High-quality 4x6 digital prints for 25 |
