Good on you then! gives you the confidence to push that extra little
bit harder now doesn't it?

realy wish my first had gone as nicely, I ended up fighting with it
for 20 minutes then getting towed in by a jet ski, untill I was close
enough to stand and tip it up while standing, then bailed it out (oday
sprite, 10ft dinghy) I was blue by the time I got a chance to dry out,
first warm day in spring, snow had only been gone a week, and that
water was COLD, I was told later that on the sprite, since I don't
carry a lot of weight, that I should have hung off the bow, and it
would have rolled itself upright, luckily I haven't had the chance to
try it out.

Ken,

It's too bad some are so lax.

By the way -

Has everyone seen the NEW Sunfish Class Association Bulletin Board? Much
improved over the old board. More of a discussion format than the old Coffee
House style message board. Required registration helps keep the Spam in
check.

If you are using a link to the old bulletin board, get rid of it - it's now
junk. Get the new link from the Sunfish Class Association home page:

Ken,

very good job, wish all the groups I belong to would do that!

Unfortunately, due to the rash of Spam hitting all the sailing groups right
now one gets through from time to time.

This group is monitored a little closer than most so members don't get
bombarded with the myriad of "off topic" posts that hit us all daily.

Don't be too hard on other Moderators. It's tough to watch 24/7. You gotta
sleep and go sailing sometime.

Thanks for the kind words -

It's a state or county lake. I know of one double boat ramp. 50hp.
motor limit. It may be too shallow. How deep do you need for a
sunfish? Or is it people just sail else where. We do have Creve
Coeur, the mississippi(yes, alot people sail it) and a little farther
out Carlyle, Rend, Mark Twain. Anybody know of any other close by
lakes that aren't private?

Up here in michigan there's a few that are realy nice lakes, but the surrounding countryside serves to block any wind on them, or set it up so there are far too many dead spots to realy enjoy it any, green lake has great sailing in a few parts, but the rest is dead most of the time, on little whitefish it's wind at the north side, and pretty dead everywhere else, so you don't see many sailers there. lots of lakes up here like that, big whitefish is good all around, but far too many power boats unless you show up real early, or as posted earlier, all private land around them.

Re: Digest Number 155

hey super sunfish dude,
go out in the lake, uncleat your main sheet, make sure you bungee your
dagger down, walk up to your mast and pull it over. swim away from it
and see how cool it looks all turtled over with the dagger stickin up
like a big ol shark. swim back and grab the dagger and pull her back
upright. get in and sail the ____ out of her with no more worries
!!
oh, also make sure your cooler is secured.
and remember, full beer cans float full bottles sink.
enjoy, danny

a "regular" Sunfish and I am able to sail it

hiking strap, those seem to be a little "advanced"
for me at this stage. I keeled her over to what
seemed like 45 degrees or more the other day and
almost wiped out. I think I'll keep an even keel
until I'm more familiar with my "what to do in this
situation" awareness is more developed.
I enjoy reading the group postings and look forward
to joining a local sailing group at my marina
soon. This should provide much needed crew
experience.
Thanks for the information.
Shawn
Here's the Prtsmouth handicaps for the racing fish and
the super.
Sunfish (Int.) SF 99.6
Super Sunfish SSF 100.7

Note: for handicap racing the Super requires the
standard wooden daggerboard for it's handicap.

Add the plastic fantastic daggerboard to a super and
you'll challenge the lazers at their 91 handicap.

Gail,
I'm guessing it's a normal feeling for a
rookie, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm
terrified of capsizing the boat. I have no doubt in
my swimming or water survival skills. I am
also familiar with water skiing and righting
jet-ski/wave runner type watercraft. It's getting
that seemingly HUGE sail out of the water that has
me scared I guess. I understand that capsizing
is part of the sport and it won't deter me from
learning and enjoying sailing.
As long as the main sheet isn't cleated the sail just
empties itself out and fall vertical as the mast comes
up.
Have the mainsheet cleated and the sail roach will
hold about 20 gallons of water. Not that won't come up.

My name is Tom I have a Super Sunfish I have had for about four
years, I am the one who supplied the rigging diagram for the
group. I have sailed both sunfish types and find the Super to be
faster although I have not raced a sunfish with the racing sail
yet. Also because of the marcooney rig the Super will point higher
into the wind which is a great advantage when racing. It will point
even higher with the racing dagger board which I have. so if you
have any questions feel free to e-mail me. I am known by my
nickname "wirenut"

Yes the standard sunfish mast will fit in the Super
hull as they are identical except for some extra
rigging. wirenut

Any idea if the standard mast fits the Super Fish
mast step?

It appears from the Super Sunfish diagrams that if
the mast fits the
standard rig will fit right onto the Super hull.

The Super Sunfish is sailed on a Sunfish hull with
extra gear added. The
"other" rig is a standard Sunfish rig ...

STUMPS ARE BAD!! If you hit one you likely will crack the daggerboard trunk
somewhere and that starts leaks ... Good to check any lake before you go!
A lake with a 50 hp limit is going to be pretty wild with motors, too.

If the Horseshoe lake you are refering to is the one near Granite City
Illinois. I hear that it's
just too shallow and full of stumps for sailing.
I am interested in sailing the Mississippi at Alton Pool but I'm concerned
about the current.
