Re: Ratchet block
I like the Racelite over the rubber ones because the stick will always fall to the deck if you lose it during a tack or whatever. With the rubber one it's usually pointing at some random angle in the air. I also think it has a better "feel" for some reason. I raced with the standard stick with a sail ring attached to the end. I liked it that it was always down on the deck and could move without getting into the traveller.?

Re: Ratchet block
Tom, I have chronicled the build on a forum hosted by the company that provides the plans for the "Moonfish". All the details can be found here:
It was such a fun build. I had looked at many 2nd hand Sunfish (all older than I am!!), but none of them were that great and required lots of work, so I searched and found a few clone plans and decided on the Moonfish. Luckily I found a Super Sailfish mast/sail etc for $100 which helped. If there is interest I could start a separate thread about the build. Ralph |
Re: Ratchet block
Hi Ralph. I'd like to hear more about your Sunfish clone. Have you told the story online somewhere? I'd enjoy reading all about it. I have a waterlogged old fish and that's an option I've been considering instead of repair. Re: Ratchet block
Definitely. Length becomes the decision. 48” is used for racing, shorter for recreation sailing. I have carbon fiber extensions at 39” and aluminum ones at 36”. I can ship as well. These are ready to install with golf style grips.

Re: Ratchet block
Get the universal joint so the tiller extension can be held at many different angles. With the one plane it’s harder and more uncomfortable to sail.

Here is a follow up to my original question.

I ended up purchasing a Harken ratchamatic block with stand up spring from Melges. Installed it on Saturday. It works great. So much better than just the hook. The block help holds and then as soon as tension is released it freewheels. Best $100 spent so far. Guess I have one more question. My tiller is wood and original to the 1986 SF. Does anyone recommend upgrading the extension to one that pivots in all directions vs just in one plane? Thanks Dennis Ritchie On Aug 21, 2020, at 10:34 AM, Doug Nelson <nelsondoug53@...> wrote: |
Re: Where to find a bailer in stock?
#bailer
Okay, the new plug for the old bailer came from Essentra today and it fits perfectly. Part number FP120B, was less than twenty bucks ?with the shipping, though shipping was much more than the part cost. ?It got here in three days. The edges are a little sharp if you sail barefoot; nothing that can't be fixed with a few passes with some sandpaper. It can be finger-tightened, wrenched, or turned with a screwdriver-type blade. ?It's plastic, so you can drill or melt a hole sideways thru the threaded part, unscrew it a few turns, and let the bailer do its thing underway, without having to completely remove it. ?The bright red color means you are less likely to lose it. You'll add an o-ring from the local hardware store, perhaps. Thanks for the tip on this plug: very Corinthian of you!

Re: Bailer
Hi Mark and all, I recently bought a 1971 sunfish with the original brass bailer. It does not work very well. Water gets drained very slowly when doing at least 4 or 5 knots, but as soon as I tack or decelerate, water rushes back in. Is that the way it is supposed to be? I don't think there is a ball inside, maybe is missing. Can I use the ball of a newer plastic bailer? How much should the cap be open (a few turns or all the way out, maybe)? Sorry for asking so many basic questions, but reading that you guys are knowledgeable about the bailer, I wanted to piggieback on the discussion Regards, Josh |
Re: Bailer
I believe all you need to cut is the nut in two places, remove it and then the entire part will fall out of the hole. The trick is not to cut the cockpit floor so go slow and steady.

Re: Bailer
Rolan; regarding the minifish bailer; why about using a router and a spiral-cut (AKA "zip") bit to get a slit cut in the collar? Might need to lay down some py to add support but you'd have precise depth control and a narrow cut without damaging the fiberglass. A Dremel can also be used like this; there are add-on attachments that create a cone-like platform to keep the Dremel vertically aligned by hand. |
